I noticed nobody has started talking about this hilarious and genius film.
I LOVED it. I watched the old film last night and hated it. It just doesn't hold a candle to the new film :D
Things I liked:
1. Johnny Depp's character of Willy Wonka - it was spot on
2. All the kid actors were fantastic and amazingly well cast
3. The new songs - except for Mike's but meh
4. Pretty much all of it
5. The music
6. Tim Burton's adaptation of it :D
7. The Wonka Bars that have been released :D
8. The hilarious father of Willy Wonka (the house moving - genius)
Things I didn't like:
1. The pace of the film - It was a little too fast a points
2. Oompa Loompa Song: Mike Teavee - it was rubbish and I couldn't understand a word of it
3. The first hour of the film - took waaaay too long to get into the film
Okay rant over :) I just LOVE this film!

You...you hated the orginal?! Johnny Depp can't even hold a candle to Gene Wilder. The orginal has a sense of awe, and wonder. This one...lacked it. It tried to be too wacky, and forgo the wonder of it all. And was it me, or did Tim's Wonka y'know...dislike kids or something? Wilder's Wonka didn't. I guess I say this because I grew up on the orginal...so to each their own. And as for Wonka's father, during his scenes, I was half expecting him to call out some Orcs and Goblins, or whip out a lightsaber. :o The new one...I dunno. Perhaps it was a more accurate adaptation of Robert Dahl's book, not sure as I have never read it, but personally I prefer the orginal than the new one, but not saying it wasn't good. It was...just...didn't capture the awe of the factory like the orginal did. And strangely, the titles conflict to me. The orginal seem to focus on Charlie, though called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as the new one seems to focus on Willy, and it's called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. o.o

Ara, I have to agree with the conflicting titles bit. Totally the wrong way round but not like they can change it now neh lol!
It's just the first film, you could tell the factory was just a warehouse full of "yummy" stuff. The new one actually looks like it's a new world which I think creates the awe even more neh? But I know the original was made YEARS ago so of course technology and budget come into role. I guess I just didn't like the original because it was so over the top and weird (same can be said for the new one though lol!)
The dad of Willy Wonka could've been cast as someone else but just because he was in those other films, don't think he can't do other roles. Johnny Depp was a pirate remember? doesn't mean people were expecting him to jump around with a bandana on his head slicing the kids up neh? It's not Christopher Lee's fault he's type cast so I'll dismiss that comment coz there was nothing to be done about it.
I've never read the book either but the way people describe Willy Wonka's personality, he was a little crazy and dark. I saw the craziness a bit too over done in the original with him singing songs every now and then. But Johnny Depp's character was more sinister. Therefore I don't think either of them was better than the other (I'm biased with JD LOL!) because they both captured important aspects of the character.
Don't forget it has a lot to do with target audience too and the industry. Tim Burton's film was targetted at everyone of every age and gender. Therefore they made his character more sinister etc. That's what I think anyway.
I like this debate ^_^

Bah..I should let you all watch Johnny Depp's first movie role, and see you squirm at what happens >:P
I guess I prefer the original cause I grew up on it, but I'm not saying it wasn't a good movie, it was. I liked how the factory was, and even a bit how Wonka was over the top, but somehow something didn't sit right with me. *shrugs* Oh well. And besides, the orginal Oompa Loompa songs were catchy :P

lol each to their own definitely :) I didn't like the Oompa Loompa songs (old ones I mean) they were all the same *cringes* it was badly done I think but given the time (seventies wasnt it?) I say it's not tooooo bad.
I suppose both movies are great in their own time frame. That's what makes them both classics :)
