Title: Is Yugi Goth?

SynjoDeonecros - March 21, 2005 01:40 AM (GMT)
I know this sounds funny, but think about it for a moment: Yugi has spiky, multi-colored hair, much like that of a goth (well, at least a goth in anime), he wears a collar and studded bracelets, he relates to the elements of darkness more than anything, and he's often brooding and emotional, with an infamous vengeful temper, all traits of a goth.

So, was this comparison intentional by the creators, or was it just coincidence? And what inspired it?

dark horse - March 21, 2005 06:03 AM (GMT)
hmmm, possibly.
speaking of goths, no offense to anyone who happens to be a goth, but what is the attraction? i mean, they seem so depressed and down all the time. they hate to conform to societies views of what is thought to be a normal respected member of the public. its like they want to be pro active individuals yet they all dress and act the same. how is that being an individual when their copying other people?

please, can someone shed some light on the subject because im absolutely dumbfounded......

NOTE: as i said before, this is not meant to offend.

UnknownDuelist# - March 21, 2005 09:24 AM (GMT)
who knows

king_laharl - March 21, 2005 09:59 AM (GMT)
My honest opinon, YES defiently, i mean the dude has weird spiky hair, has some sort of fetish with belts and he is just a complete goth in general

Hiei, Enraged Demon - March 21, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
Yugi isn't goth. look at his attitude. He's too nice

monolith_xyber - March 21, 2005 08:59 PM (GMT)
Man no way is Yugi goth.

No eyeliner. No mascara. No t-shirt for a band nobody has ever heard of. No stupid facial piercings.

No freaking way is he goth.

SynjoDeonecros - March 22, 2005 02:27 AM (GMT)
Hnnm, guess you're right. Well, okay, 'goth' wasn't the first thing that came to mind when I first saw Yugi without his trademark blue jacket on (at first, I thought his collar was part of his school wardrobe. weird, huh?). I dunno. If not goth, then maybe....raver? Ravers and goths do sorta dress alike, with the belts and collars and stuff. Maybe on weekends Yugi likes to pick up some glowsticks and bust a groove to some loud and semi-naughty techno beats, eh? His hair would certainly look impressive underneath a blacklight...

Newzfoxjr - March 22, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
Actually in the Japanese Anime he wears eyeliner or some freaky makeup.

I don't think he's Goth, I just think that's a hip style. That, or he's into bondage, one of the two.

Touzokuou Bakura - March 22, 2005 06:44 AM (GMT)
Hmm...I dunno, he doesn't seem like the gothic type, even if he likes wearing black clothing and lots of belts with studs on them >_>

I suppose Kazuki Takahashi just wants him to stand out or something...

No eyeliner. No mascara.

He does have black around his eyes... -_-

But ah... it is all what you make of it...
Because of the clothing and all he might look Goth...
Because of the way he acts he isn't...

Touzokuou Bakura - March 23, 2005 01:43 PM (GMT)
Yami Bakura also has black around his eyes...
Touzokuou Bakura also looks as though he hasn't slept for days...(damn those dark ringletts under his eyes )

ProfessorBrimstone - April 15, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
lol, funny! I don't think Yugi is, but I think Yami-Yugi is though! you guys read or watched the 1st series? you know what yami-yugi does to other people; he sometimes kills them!

I dunno, lol.

skull dragon - April 16, 2005 12:34 AM (GMT)
hell no yugi bakura etc aint gothic dat was dumb question for those who also thought of it you see yugi is not to offend him but the gay soft side while in the other hand bakura kills and as i know goth's dont kill theyre justr crazy

Touzokuou Bakura - April 16, 2005 04:46 AM (GMT)
Oh so crazy ppl don't ever kill ppl. *sarcastic*

Atemu/Yami/Yami Yuggi likes to drive ppl crazy and he seems to be rather cold and heartless at first, but as the story drew on he became softer.

latiosman - April 23, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
Ah he could be but he doesn't act like it. What about Duke Devlin? I mean he always wears black and red and If you've seen the first episode he's in he acts real weird. But if you think about it he really could be.

In fact that answer is totally correct... Only Yugi (or the creators of Yu-Gi-Oh) will know for shure wether he is Goth or not.

latiosman - April 28, 2005 10:46 PM (GMT)
Yeah that was a good post! Thanks for ENDING THE TOPIC!

JoMa - April 30, 2005 10:37 AM (GMT)
Let me think...

I don't think Yugi is really a Goth...

The reason that he has so much black around his eyes... and all the rest... that could have an easy reason.

Namely: Yu-Gi-Oh constanly looks back to the Acient Egypt. In the Acient Egypt it was usual for people to have those black lines around their eyes.... and Jewelery is also normal there...

So propably the once who designed Yu-Gi-Oh wanted to make an obvious link with the Acient Egypt. Because of that Yugi looks the way he does...

So it propably has totally nothing to do with Goth, but with the Acient Egypt.

Touzokuou Bakura - May 1, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
I doubt present ppl would like to imitate ancient Egyptian ppl much...

from the story (the manga), it didn't have much to do with Egypt until near the end, I suppose the author just likes drawing characters with dark circles around their eyes...

Indeed... propably the drawstyle of the person who drew the anime... or at least some characters.

But I was not really talking about the present day Yugi... but just that the lines and black around his eyes are just a link to the Acient Egypt.

The manga might not have to do about Egypt... beside the Pharaoh I think...

So... still my oppinion is that the black lines around their eyes might be because the creator wanted to have a link with the Acient Egypt.

Well, not all goths are aways sad. you just think they do. and i don't act the same as every other goth because i play the acordion and harpsicord, and i like weird al yankovic.

And i too think kaszuki just wanted him to be stange. in a good way.

Chris89 - May 4, 2005 03:27 AM (GMT)
I agree with Lemony here, I think that Yugi was simply meant to be a strange, mysterious character and the best way to portray that role is through "goth" attire. The dark eye shadow, purple spikey hair, etc; have close ties to egyptian mythology and sort of represent Yugi as a "God" like status. I really think that the character for yami yugi is made flawlessly, I just wish Tea was goth too, now that would be hot :P, what, I like goth chicks

LOL Then i'm just right for you eh?

Touzokuou Bakura - May 11, 2005 01:20 PM (GMT)
lol a personal friend of mine would suit you too then :P she's kinda leaving the gothic group lately though.

iloveatem - June 18, 2005 03:58 AM (GMT)
Yes, he is supposed to be mysterious, and is he not known as the DARK Yugi, of all things? Plus....imagine him in any other color and your question will probably bw answered....

Touzokuou Bakura - June 18, 2005 04:06 AM (GMT)
I tried drawin Atemu without the black linings...I don't think it made much of a difference, he just looks more unsleepy than the lined ones o.O

Kisara - June 18, 2005 04:27 PM (GMT)
Either he's a goth, or a Punk-skater type.

UnknownDuelist# - June 18, 2005 09:05 PM (GMT)
maybe he is *pharaoh was born with that hair in a flashback in memory world*

iloveatem - June 18, 2005 09:55 PM (GMT)
He's always had that hair. People are always asking 'oh, I wonder how much gel he uses' and crap like that and i have to scream 'HE WAS BORN WITH IT YOU IDIOT!!!'

How the hell is someone born with that kind of hair? Was his mom a groupie or something? O_o

iloveatem - June 18, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
....wow, good question. But we never see his mom, just his normal haired dad. *ponders...*

XD

Yeah...It's werid...original....but weird. :|

Touzokuou Bakura - June 19, 2005 06:17 AM (GMT)
His gramps also had that hair shape o_O

iloveatem - June 19, 2005 09:01 PM (GMT)
True, true, but the anime never said that the Pharaoh was related to his adivsor, Siamun

Touzokuou Bakura - June 21, 2005 07:20 AM (GMT)
They probably are...Just like you'd never though Atemu and Seth were related o_O

Atemu looked NOTHING like his dad. >_>;;

iloveatem - June 23, 2005 02:31 AM (GMT)
Then I suppose the only explaination is that he looks like his mother (freaky images). Strange that they showed both of Seto's parents but not the Pharaoh's...*ponders angrily*

Angel of the Blue Moon - June 23, 2005 03:23 AM (GMT)
The way I look at it, I don't think Yugi's goth at all. Dress attire is not what defines a person and sets them as goth or not (in my opinion). The reason many people look to people who dress in blacks, reds, chains, etc as goth is because many goths wear that attire, as they tend to portray melancholy and preferable loneliness, but that in its entirety does not make them gothic. (Again, my opinion)

Yugi's personality and the track his mind's on is a very friendly, happy-go-lucky, childish definition. He's very firm in his belief of togetherness. As far as his hair goes, hey, it's anime.

My personal belief of why Yugi tends to look more on the Gothic side is that he dresses not to stand out, but to blend in. He is small and somewhat shy, very innocent, and that tends to get a kid picked on. His attire follows the trend for many at this point of time. (I know it is in my school, anyways. lol) Wearing the spikes, chains, belts, cuffs, etc. is a way to familiarize with other people his age.

Of course, this is all my opinion, and it is late at night and so I probably wording a lot of this weird. My opinion differs from many others and no opinion is "right" or "wrong".

I think the only way you can truly find out is to go to Kazuki Takahashi himself. He's the only one who can give us a straightforward, "correct" answer.

^_^

iloveatem - June 24, 2005 12:20 AM (GMT)
That is a great and accurate explaination! However, it seemed to be more on the defining line of Yugi Mutou, not the Pharaoh. I was pondering the possibility of the Pharaoh being goth, and, as it does seem a strong one, I wonder why his instincts would make him dress that way, him being a Pharaoh in the past and all. And now I recall a conversation between Yugi and his other self (one of their first disagreements) where Pharaoh wanted Yugi to wear a pair of black wrist bands, however Yugi found no need (or desire) to. Now, why would the Pharaoh want them in the first place??? (aw, man, I think I made myself more confused!!)

Touzokuou Bakura - June 28, 2005 04:44 AM (GMT)
I don't have the address for Katzuki Takahashi...I don't know how to write Japanese either (though I've heard that they can read Chinese)... Otherwise I'd have long since written a letter to him to ask him how old and when his birthday is and how tall how much he weighs etc. for Bakura sama...
