We should have bought much many more...

ChrisCRTS - June 1, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
Well i don't now. Many more? What for? We don't realy need them exept from SF. Do 135 cover all the SF?

cameleon1975 - June 1, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
I think that we have the license to build them in Greece.Anyway,135 pieces will be only an initial batch in my opinion.Maybe some friends who served in the Special Forces could give a better estimation?

digenis - June 1, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
cameleon,

We were not granted permission by the US government for local production (even though Barrett was ready to license local production).

Chris,

In the infantry support units (LYT), it could be used to disable or destroy lightly armored vehicles (including most APC/AIFV's used by Turkey). Today such vehicles would have to be taken out with ATGM's or PAO's (recoilless rifles). I find the use of the Barrett .50 cal or even the 25mm XM109 ideal for such targets as the engagement range is superior, and there is a smaller "footprint" (especially smoke) after the weapon is used.

PS: These are some heavy and long weapons. A friend of mine owns one, and I can tell you that it is very difficult to carry around (especially in battle).

Pytheas - June 1, 2005 09:35 PM (GMT)
they look like as damn cannons... :mgun:

cameleon1975 - June 2, 2005 11:14 AM (GMT)
@Digenis

If we dont plan to buy over 1000+ pieces it wouldn't have sense anyway to aquire license and machinery to build those weapons.

They would be very useful but i don't think that its a weapon for the regular infantry. In my opinion its more something the green berets should handle....

EmmanK - June 2, 2005 01:03 PM (GMT)
Have we bought silencers for the Nemesis? This gun must be VERY noisy :shout:

:damn: I forgot our LYT`s with their glorius PAO!
And the funny think is when i first saw the M-82 i thought of replacing the PAO with it!
I am getting old

I think that in a two men sniper team one would carry the barrel and the other the rest of the weapon.

EmmanK: :cantbe:

cameleon1975 - June 5, 2005 10:04 AM (GMT)
Buying silencers would be great, but i hope it wont affect effective range to much!

Pytheus: Nice Scan!

Temenos - July 4, 2005 03:19 AM (GMT)
They would be ideal on the mountains. 13kg strapped is not all that heavy to carry around if you have an M4 (3kg) for a companion and having a range of 1.8km is close to perfect on the Pindos and Rhodopi mountains. All mountain men should have one. :mgun:

Kiziroglu - July 4, 2005 09:12 AM (GMT)
Isn't it so that it is illegal by international law to shoot with this weapon on humans because it is a anti-material weapon ? i think i read it on a us-site

ChrisCRTS - July 4, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)
The US used them in two man teams. One carries the barrel and one the rest.

Thermopyles - July 4, 2005 05:46 PM (GMT)
I have handled them, and I would NOT want to have to carry those around by myself... For regular infantry, our "eleutheroi skopeutes" (free/sharp shooters) would be better served with a Rem 700. This way the ammo is interchangeable, and for the same weight we can carry around a Kornet-E plus the Rem 700.

ChrisCRTS - July 4, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
Have you also shoot with them? Or met someone who did?
What you/they say?

Thermopyles - July 4, 2005 06:30 PM (GMT)
No, I personaly never have, though I've witnessed dozens of shots. It is a very powerfull and accurate weapon. Usefull, but not usefull enough IMO for reg infantry...

ChrisCRTS - July 4, 2005 06:44 PM (GMT)
Thanks Thermopyles!

I think you are wrong, as one of the purposes of this weapon is to kill high importance persons from a long distanve (over a mile)...

Of cours it can penetrate to light and medium armoured targets like Humvees, personell carriers, etc...

ChrisCRTS - July 5, 2005 07:02 PM (GMT)
Nemesis. HA! Children toy!
