Very interesting.

My fathers familiy came from the caucasus, His familiy moved to Anatolia about 150-200 years ago. However I dont know to which ethnic group they belonged.

Most non-Turkish migrants from the Caucasus in the 19th and 20th centuries were Abhaz and Cerkes (Cirassian). I believe about 800 thousand to 1 million Cerkes migrated to Anatolia, and were spread throughout Anatolia. The city called Carsamba near Samsun is mostly of Cerkes origin. About 80% of the population of Carsamba was Cerkes in the early 20th century.

So there is a high probability my fathers family is circassian. I did a search on google on this subject and found out, that many Circassians fled the caucasus because of the Russian expansion into the territory during the 19 and 20th century.
Question, there are so many races living in the caucasus and some of them may have welcomed the Russian expansion. However why did primarily the circassians flee the caucasus?

Did the Russians have a some kind of grudge against them or where they so pro-Ottoman?

Well, I'm not so sure that there are so many "races" in the Caucasus. There are, however, many nationalities. :sarcasm:

The Cerkes are Muslims. They have also, like most Caucasian groups, always been fiercly independent and fought for their sovreignty for centuries in a series of tribal wars. They resisted Russian conquest bravely, but in an effort to secure the North Caucasus, the Russians ethnically cleasned the region by means of massacres and starvation. In their place, millions of Russians and other Christians were settled there. The largest Muslim (or non-Christian for that matter) group in the North Caucasus is the Cerkes. So the primary reason why the Russians tried to rid the area of the Cerkes was that they were Muslim.

The Cerkes, upon arriving in Anatolia, fought alongside the Turks against the invaders after WWI. They are mostly remebered as loyal friends of the Turks (except for Cerkes Ethem; he was a traitor  ).
