Spartan,

I've been playing bouzouki for about three years now, so I listen to a lot of rebetika and old laika.

My favourite songs are, of course, by Markos and Tsitsanis, but I also like Giorgos Mouflouzelis, Giorgos Mitsakis, Loukas Daralas, Apostolos Nikolaidis, Spyros Zagoraios, and Grigoris Bithikotsis. Giorgos Dalaras is a legend (50 Hronia Rebetiko Tragoudi is still one of my favourite albums).

Man oh man....rebetika! Most of the time, I have them playing in the background while posting. Their like a drug......let the music flow through the body and the soul finds peace!

Absolutely love to play bouzouki but alas, I have been struggling to learn the piano.

I collected ALL of Dalaras, Tsitsanis and Markos music (mp3) but I do not know any of the newer artists.

You mentioned some names. Which "younger" artists would you recommend as "hier apperent" to the old rebetes? I can really use some help here because I am too far from Greece and even further from the Greek music scene. :help:

Dragases - March 9, 2005 08:22 AM (GMT)
Spartan, I know what you mean. I grew up listening to rebetika, and I swore to myself that I'd learn to play the bouzouki one day. It's an amazing instrument and I never get bored playing it, especially now that I can play the songs I grew up with - Ta Matoklada Sou Lamboun, Ta Leromena T' Aplyta, To Pitsiriki, Ta Dyo Sou Heria, Vadizo Kai Paramilo ...

Hope this list helps...

- Ston Adi Andamosane (Apostolos Nikolaidis).
- Otan Kapnizei O Loulas (Apostolos Nikolaidis).
- Proi Proi Me Ti Drosoula (Nikos Papadatos/Litsa Zanet).
- Hronia Ston Peraia (Spyros Zagoraios).

Four must-have albums are the so-called "Apagoreumena" rebetika albums. They were recorded in the US in the early seventies by a group of rebetes called "Oi Rebetes" (catchy name, huh?). The albums, though, are listed under the names of the singers they used. These albums complement each other beautifully because the same band is used on all the recordings, and the songs are great, too, because they keep the original lyrics considered "taboo" at the time (politics, drugs etc.).

***

- To Palio Rebetiko Tou Mouflouzeli (Giorgos Mouflouzelis)
- O Mouflouzelis Erhete (Giorgos Mouflouzelis)

Mouflouzeli was an old-school rebeti - a true manga. He wasn't as popular as Marko and Tsitsani, but he wrote some classic songs. These two albums are gems, recorded in the early 70s, and he sings and plays the tzoura on both. He has a deep, slightly raspy voice, which perfectly complements the style. The music on these two albums is how "revivalist" rebetika should be recorded (the bouzouki/tzoura/baglama sound awesome), but I think that's due to the fact that he was a true rebeti.

***

- 50 Hronia Rebetiko Tragoudi (Giorgos Dalaras).
- Rebetika Tis Katohis (Giorgos Dalaras).

Regardless of what many people say, Dalaras is one of the artists we have to thank for the Rebetika "Revival". He is known more for his Laika, but he does a brilliant interpretation of the rebetika. Both these albums have a song list of lesser heard, but great, rebetika songs.

***

- Enas Rebetis (Loukas Daralas)

Loukas Daralas was Giorgos Dalaras' dad. He was not as well known as other rebetes of his era, but he recorded a couple of really good albums. Both of these albums were re-released together recently on one CD. He was an excellent bouzouki player.

A few other modern rebetika artists you might want to check out are Babis Goles, Agathonas Iakovidis, and Babis Tsertos. These guys use traditional rebetika instruments and concentrate more on re-recording old 20s - 30s era songs.

My father is a well-known laouta manufacturer in Turkey. He has many customers in Greece. I'll post some pics.

Dragases - March 9, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
Modus,

Did you ever get involved with music, seeing as your father is in the business?
What kind of music do you listen to (or play)?

modus - March 9, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)
Dear Dragases,

I played baglama, and tambour when I was in high-school. I played drums in university, after I had realized that I was better in ryhtm.

Nowadays I mostly listen to classical music and jazz, and of course traditional Turkish music, besides world folk music.

Actually it depends on my mood, sometimes I like to listen to Portuguesen folk, i.e. fado, and Argentinian tango... Sometimes Massive Attack... Sometimes classical har rock... :headphone:

Anyway I like to listen to good music, and not yet discovered what for the God's sake good music is... :guitar:

Levend - March 9, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
...wow Modus...very good taste, Fado, Tango Massive Attack...you do like depressing Music, hence you must be liking Rebetiko too...just like me.

Regards

Guys,

We need to find a way to share the music. I am a member of a huge mp3 site and they have practically all the Greek music ever played.

I you guys want.......what is your e-mail?

Do you guys also listen to American blues music?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dragases,
I don't know what others say about Dalaras, but I really like his music. Like I said before, I have his entire discography (almost) and I listen to it in the car. It can make a 6 hour borings business trip into a pleasure.
Some of my favorite stuff from Dalaras is Mana mou Ellas, his Marko album....too much to list.
I will definatly check out EACH and EVERY artist you listed. THANK YOU! :hathello:
BTW, do you have the original Dalaras discs? I am missing several songs from his discography.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Modus,

Let's see, can we make an internet band with a bouzouki, baglama and piano? We'll let Levend play some bongos or something! :P

BTW, who is going to sing? Last time I attemted anything resembling singing, the dead started spinning in their graves! :hammer:

Oh wait.....rebetes are not suppose to sing...their suppose to let their heart cry out the blues!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Levend,
Rebetika depressing? I beg to differ...okay, maybe a little.:)
For me, if there is anything depressing about rebetika is that they remind me about Greece and certain time periods of my life, but other then that, they really lift my soul. On the other hand, I would pack my ears with explosive and detonate them if I had to listen to Techno Rock or something equivilant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the right hand side, you will find a link to a rebetiko radio station.

Oops double post.

Spartan - March 10, 2005 05:02 AM (GMT)
Dragases and Modus,

Why don't you guys record some of your music and post it? I (and probably others) absolutely love to hear it!

Mia penia re Dragase, mia penia gia na raisi xamogelo.....:)

Dragases - March 10, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Spartan,

I also promised myself that I was going to master the bouzouki before I let myself loose on the unsuspecting public. :lol:

My favourite Dalaras albums are the two rebetika albums I listed, and the Afieroma Ston Marko. But I regularly listen to all the ones I listed in my previous post.

I have the following Dalaras CDs.

- Giorgos Dalaras
- O Metoikos
- Thelo Na Ta Po
- Natane To 21
- Oi Maides Mou Oi Ilioi Mou
- Afieroma Ston Marko Vamvakari (Live)
- Afieroma Ston Vasili Tsitsani (Live)
- Mikra Asia
- 50 Hronia Rebetiko Tragoudi
- Rebetika Tis Katohis

Let me know which songs you're missing.

Dragases,

Who is that? Is that you?

"Gergeos Dalaras" album? *looks into files and scratches head*

I do not have an album with only his name as a title. What is the song group on it? Does it have any other title on it?

The songs I am missing are:

Anastenazo vgeni fotia from "Ta tragoudia mou Live".
A couple of songs of his Latin Album
Several songs from "H Asfaltos pou Trexi".

Oh well, I have his other 600 or so songs. :)

Dragases - March 11, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)
Spartan,

I wish! No, that's Loukas Daralas (Giorgos Dalaras's father). Have you heard any of his songs? This one is "Kaimo Mes Stin Kardoula Mou"; originally composed by Sotiria Bellou. I'll be uploading rebetika onto this link, so, check back every few days. Let me know what you think of the songs.

Yes. "Giorgos Dalaras" was his first album, before "Natane to 21".
Songs include - Itane Aprilis Minas, To Limani, S' Agapo, Pou' nai Ta Hronia...
I've never seen this album under another name.

Spartan - March 11, 2005 12:59 AM (GMT)
Dragases,

It's interesting but his son definatly has a "stronger" voice (thank God). To me, a "real" rebeti should sound like he has one foot in the grave while trying to make out with two woman. Like Marko! :dunno:

Dalaras-Self Titled. Yup, got it! Otherwise you were going to be in for a really sad amount of groveling on my part! :P

Hey, load them up and fire away! I NEVER tire of good "penies". Maybe I can do the same with some of the "stuff" I have (30 gigs). Let me know if you want some "stuff". Look into your inbox, you might find something interesting. :cool:

Thermopyles - March 13, 2005 09:15 PM (GMT)
B) Yeeah B) Nothing flows through the sould like a rebetiko... For newer rebetes, its hard to find good new, what with the crackdown on the whole rebetiko culture, and competition of western culture. Mouflouzelis is alot of fun, Eustathiou is good... My personal favorits are Yiorgos Batis and Spiros Peristeris

@ dragases

Try to play "O Teketzis" by Peristeris. That one is alot of fun as it is all +- 200 couts/min of 5/4 with a nice instumental you can play in 5/4 or 9/4 ;) Great stuff!

Dragases - March 16, 2005 08:36 AM (GMT)
Peristeris, huh? Didn't he do "Pino Kai Metho"?

Thermopyles, do you have "O Teketzis"? The 5/4 time signature intrigues me.

Thermopyles - March 16, 2005 05:03 PM (GMT)
Yes I have it. I don't know how to upload it, if you can tell me, I'll set it up for you. I have the original, and a superb diaskeui.

Yeah bro, I've been playing drums ever since I had to quit boxing... Nice replacement, though :D The main reason the rebetika have the power they do, is because of their use of odd-time sigs. Personaly Odd times put me in a trance, and I'll play 75% of my music in them. Cut Time or 4/4 is too predictable...
