ETA

(Eidikon Tmima Aleksiptotiston)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hellenic (Greek) military maintains a number of elite units within its ranks. One of the most highly trained, and secretive, of these units is the Army's Idiko Tmima Alexiptotiston, or E.T.A. The E.T.A. (Special Parachute/Airborne Unit) was formed in 1959, as a Long Range Recon Patrol (LRRP) type unit, and is tasked with conducting operations similar to US Special Forces or British SAS units. Some of these missions include: strategic reconnaissance, direct action raids, and sabotage missions.
Very little information about the units training, organization, or operations has been released publicly. What little is known is that it's composed of carrier officers and NCO's. ETA's troops undergo some of the most extensive and grueling training within the Greek armed forces. In addition to completing training at the Army's KEAP (Kentro Ekpedefseos Anorthodoxou Polemou -Unconventional Warfare Training Center), SERE, and parachute courses, ETA operators have also attended the Greek Navy's MYK course, and the NATO International Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol School in Germany. ETA operators have conducted joint training exercises similar type units from allied NATO countries, excluding Turkey.

Reportedly ETA recently been active in the former Yugoslavian republics/Somalia/Afghanistan.....

ETA is known to use the US produced M-16 assault rifle, M-4 carbines, M-203 40 mm grenade launcher, and Belgian produced Minimi (US M-249 5.56 mm) light machine gun.

Is that an ACOG sight on the M-4 in the second picture?Do Greek Special Forces units use such optics if so, can we have a list of them if possible?
BTW; this is my first post here, so hi everyone.

Hi baris, welcome to the WCF. :welcome:

Lord I have a question also, what kind of weapon does the soldier carry on the 3th picture. It looks a M4 but its ammo-magazine looks different

Lord - June 1, 2005 01:23 PM (GMT)
@Baris

welcome...
and yes the Greek ETA units use alot of different variants of sights (all updated and modern )

@Cid
This is a 100 round magazine which can be used from the M16...

In the future i will try to be more specific about the SF units...especially the Greek...

Thanks for your welcome friends.
Lord, you are right, that is an 100 round magazine, it also has bipods under it. It is used as a team support MG in Greek SF. It also has a NV pod mounted above it but I can not tell the name as it is not very clear in the picture. Can you provide some info about it. There are eotechs mounted on the M4s the first pic. as far as I see. Why dont they use fix top M4, they mount the optics over the barrel, why do they choose to do so. Thanks

Edit: After checking the round magazined M4 I realised that it is a designated marksman rifle. The scope made me think that. What do you think.
