The New Peshmerga Military
A Kurdish Army Peshmerga "Special Forces" Soldier places his AKM assault rifle on the ground to pose for a photograph at a river stream located in the countryside near Dohuk.Peshmerga forces fought side by side with American troops in the 2003 Iraq War in Iraqi Kurdistan. Since that time the Peshmerga have assumed full responsibility for the security of the Kurdish areas of Northern Iraq.

In early 2005 it was speculated by Newsweek magazine that Peshmerga forces could be trained by the US to take on Sunni rebels in Iraq.

In late 2004, when Arab Iraqi Police and ING (Iraqi National Guard) units in the city of Mosul collapsed in the face of an insurgent uprising, Kurdish Peshmerga battalions, who had recently been converted into ING forces, led the counter-attack alongside US military units. To this day, there are a number of Kurdish battalions of former Peshmerga in the Iraqi Army serving in Northern Iraq.

It is estimated that as of January, 2005 there were 80,000 Peshmerga fighters in Iraqi Kurdistan. A February 2005 The New York Times article mentioned that Massoud Barzani wants to retain the Peshmerga forces. The article estimates their number to be 100,000. A recent CBS News reports places their number at 175,000.

The peshmergas are an active partner in the American-led coalition in Iraq. Many peshmerga are fluent in Arabic, in contrast to foreign coalition troops, and they therefore play an important role in the Sunni triangle of Central Iraq. On the strategic level the peshmergas are ready to fight a guerrilla war in case of a Turkish or an Iranian invasion of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Current Equipment of the Peshmerga
Unlike the other militias, the Peshmerga were not prohibited by the transitional government, the Kurdish army has been formed out of the Peshmerga. They are usually armed with AK-47s and AK-74s, RPKs (light Soviet machine guns) and DShKs (heavy Soviet machine guns). During the American-led invasion the Peshmerga captured the rest of the arms of the Iraqi forces, consisting of more than 2000 armored vehicles (some hundred of them PT-76s and a smaller number of T-55s) and an unknown number of artillery guns.

Without air defences and sufficient numbers of antitank materials like Kornets or MILANs, they have no chance against the Turkish Armed Forces in a conventional fight.
I am sure they wont dig out trenches where they will be buried alive under TAF bombs. They'll all go civil and urban, the minute our tanks roll into northern Iraq.
What I fail to understand is that why do they take it personally? Turkey wants to operate against PKK and then out.
It is like Barzani PRAYS Turkeys attacks his forces too. ( Americans shall leave sooner or later ) But if Turks and US collide head to head then Kurds will be the real beneficiary of this. What he cant read is that with the emergence of again-alive-and-kicking Putin's Russia US cant afford to screw Turks.
That SOB Barzani clown will die a traitor death at the hands of Arabs if you ask me.Just leave it to time.

Yes ...you refrain to the Turkis view...

But maybe they are afraid ...that if the Turkish Army is ..in...they never will step out again...?
2...there araises questions about Kirkuk...which Turkey in my opinion...will never let to Kurds...and without Kirkuk a Kurdish state cant exist///
Whats interesting ...is that at this moment...actually a turkish investor gains from the Oil in kirkuk (if iam not mistaken...)

kurdish region is mostky used by every body during the history !
and for this they always uprised agains the ruling countries and all ended with strong army operations.

1960 s israel used them against iraq and armed them . with iran !
1970 s 1980 iran back them up against iraq .
1980 iranies kurdes take money against islamist rejime in iran from usa.
1990 Turkish army use talabani and barzani and his 10 000 20 000 strong men against pkk. and paid them.
1990 s Usa gave them hope then abonden them so they had to face with saddams army !
2000 s new era. now Usa creates a new coutry there ! with 100 000 soldiers trong with light arms! to use against iran !

without air defence !! they have no chance !!.

and in time. arabs persians will do what ever they want to them. and we will watch !.

Basicly thik this stiuation like this. in your country !

usa invades or russia Greece ! and kills all high oficers in army ! and finds all albanians and turks pays them maoney and makes them new police or army strong as 100 000 200 000 strong !!

what would you do ?? why the iraqi insurgents atack iraqi police mostly !! with suicide! bombs!!

a invading army come to a land and some people in this land helps them !
history will be writen in the same way !!

i get your points...Kaan...

But hopefully...Greece has no OIL...lol ;)

The American do the same mistakes like they did...in Afghanistan with the mujhshedins...(giving them Stinger rockets) etc etc....againt the Russians...

Its easy to help the Kurds out with any material they want...
US...seeing the Kurds like a puppy dog of theres...
They say they are the only Democratic people in the rgions etc etc (normaly US propagnda BS)

They think they will use the Kurds...
1. To controll the Iraqis better...
2. To use them in a future war against Iran maybe...
3.To balance Turkeys Power in the region...

classical politic...

KOKORO - July 6, 2007 05:54 AM (GMT)
yes same ideas .

like in afganistan they help mujahidins train them against a big satan Ussr,
so what happened Ussr no longer exist so! those people start a new target !!
another Satan ! so usa is the target!!

now same game with kurds !

they dont know this they arm them but some of the weapons goesto islamic militants.

most of the famılıes have 6 7 kıds ın the region . and they hav eto survıe
so 1 boy to Pkk 2 boy to pesmerge army , 1 boy to ıslamıst gerıllas 2 to work for the family so everybody happy!

but when you gıve new glock s to pesmerge this also goes to pkk and taliban.
when u gıve them anti tank mınes this also goes to pkk

ın the future thıs will hıt them agaın !

1960 conter guerlıa traınıng manuel says

to deal wıth a bug , you must train bug eater bugs to fight with them.

1990 new adition it is like this.
to deal with a bug if u train a bug to eat it . you may be sucsesfull but the end you will have a bigger and stronger bug wich is hungry !! now it will look for food it can bite you too.

we will se what will hapen !

Looks like a high risk venture for Turkey to me.

However strong ones military is ,once you start projecting force outside of ones borders there are risks.

What if Turkey is seen negatively internationally?

What if Turkey can"t completely crush Kurdish army? What if it becomes protracted and Turkey no longer has US backing or Russia decides to covertly back Kurds to gain influence in region?

Strong militarys are great for deterent and self defence but they lose some of their utility once the shooting starts. And if you project force and only succeed 90% then a guerrilla movement can claim some sort of success and ones military loses prestige. :(

KOKORO - July 12, 2007 08:29 AM (GMT)
ıf there will be a solition we would enter north iraq !
pesmerge isnt a problem ! they have no artilry no air defence sytem !

and pkk camps are some caves and some tents becasue of this we dont enter

if we put 50 000 soldier there for what to catch 20 goats !!

we wait ! when the time will be right we will do agian what we have to do !

and now already we are very oposite to usa !!
and getting closer to russia china axis.
