Title: Turkey's gold imports almost tripled

Turkey gold imports rising
Istanbul: Tue, 3 Jul 2007
Turkey's gold bullion imports have almost tripled in June as wedding season and world gold prices hovering around $650 levels boost consumer appetite.
Imports by one of the world's top consumers of the metal jumped by 178 per cent year-on-year in June, figures from the Istanbul Gold Exchange showed.
'Because the gold price has come off from $670 levels, there's plenty of physical buying around $640-650,,' a gold trader based in Turkey said.
'The wedding season is another factor, everyone rushes to buy jewellery,' he added.
Turkey's gold imports rose by 10 per cent in the first half of the year to 104.8 tonnes, the Exchange said.
Turkey's jewellery sector, hit by high and volatile prices in 2006, has recovered this year as world gold prices have fallen from record highs.

turkey isone of the biggest gold investır in the world.
our last 200 years ıs full of crisises so people learn most reıble thing is not dolar not land and stock share . only gold counts!!!

People in nations with shaky currencies often buy gold as a hedge. Turkey has been building their economy on debt and on selling off assets. So far it's worked reasonably well, but the notes will come due someday and folks are worried the government will try and inflate it's way out of it's obligations-just like so many times in the past. That's why they're buying up gold, IMO.
Thermopyles - July 5, 2007 03:38 PM (GMT)
You are both right. Gold is the best thing that Turkeys people can invest in. If they ever have to add or chop 00's off the Lyra, or when those note come due and inflation goes nuts, those with gold will be buying up everything that everyone is foreclosing...
But the sheer amount they buy is impressive. 104-110MT/yr is alot!! for comparison, Vietnam, with almost equal population, in an area of the world that the only real safe investment is gold (for 800 years), they only consume 80MT's. This shows that not only do Turks realise the importance and role of gold, but that they also have more purchasing power than many natiots and buy more.
Kokkoro, what karat gold do you guys buy? Here it used to be 18-22k when I was growing up. Now they are down to 14k, which is not even worth buying BTW. In Egypt it is 22k, with beutiful workmanship. In India and Thailand, they have the finest gold I've ever seen. 24k max, 22k min, and workmanship and designs that are spectacular! And the price of worked gold is only very little more expensive (10-15%) than gold stamps or coins. While in Greece, worked gold is 150% more expensive!!!
Landos - July 5, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
The more pure the gold the softer it is and more easily scratched. My wedding ring was only 10k, the balance being copper. It looked fine and wore better. Wore better than the marriage, as well! :wall:
Should have married a nice Greek girl!
Thermopyles - July 5, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
Me & my wifes wedding ring is 18k gold w/24k platinum in the Greek infinity design. The platinum is super tough (at least like titanium) and protects the softer gold inside. 10k??? C'mon!!! :bootyshake: :baeh: Thats not even gold anymore! Shit, I'm by no means a wealthy fellow, but when you gotta do something, you do it right! PS... Greek girls come at a high cost as well! (In many ways  )
Most Indian and Thai gold chain is 23k. I've seen as low as 20k for more strength. The 23k is so soft that the clip that holds the chain together is firmly but gently pulled open and pushed closed to secure the chain. Cool thing - it never breaks or craks, only bends (unless you just try to twist it or something)
Landos - July 5, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
LOL. I got my wedding band for about $ 50 in 1983.
I put my money in mutual funds and equities, not commodities. I've got well over a million dollars in investments with a target of $ 3 Million by the time I retire (hopefully 6-7 years).
I don't know about Greek women "coming at a high cost". Couldn't have cost more than my wife! I put her through 6 years of schooling, a year of looking for a job and within 6 weeks of landing one she filed for divorce. :wall:
Then again, she's been a flop in everything she's taken on, be it an occupation, wife, caretaker for me ailing father, whatever. I never believed it when I was younger, but some people are born losers. You could put them in the best situation possible and they'd find a way to phuck it up. They're just more comfortable as failures-I guess they feel less stress that way. Who knows?
What I'm really looking for is horny Greek lady who's good looking, loyal to her man to a fault and likes talking about men's issues. Of course, she'd have to have net worth at least equal to mine with a comparable salary. I'm not going through anymore divorce "shearings". gun2
Thermopyles - July 5, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
KaraLOL
Poor Landos... Fackin divorces expesive! They give to the woman so easily. At least you still have enough for a nice retirement :dunno: I can hope for 1/3 of that if I'm lucky...
Bro, Greek girls are high maintenance. You have to wait for her, she has to look just right, you have to be a mantis, show a nice car ect... Best thing to do is find any girl who knows how to take care of herself and knows how tough the world is. Less room for mistakes... :2c:
Thermopyles - July 5, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
Anyway, look at it this way:
Turkey has 70mio people and uses 105MT
India has 1Bio and uses 400MT, the worlds highest by 160 tonnes.
So Turkey is 14% of their pop and invests 27.1% as much, almost double per capita...
But yep, mutual funds with commodities sector is best. It can always save your ass.

1. Bro, what women DON'T you have to wait for? Their clock is always set half an hour late. Accept it.
2. They all have to "look just right". Never forget women don't dress for men. The dress for other women. It's a competitive thing.
3. What's a "mantis"?
4. All women want to drive in a nice car. Especially if they have kids. Then they want to drive in the latest $ 50,000 sports utility to take the kids to soccer practice.
5. Best thing to do is to find some woman who wants to be your partner, instead of your arm decoration. Unfortunately, there aren't many of those around.
Yeah, I got f**** in my divorce. But I recovered financially. My ex screwed up her finances, just like she screwed up everything else. ;)

That's true. Women spend every dime you make. If your salary is doubled overnight, they spend twice as much no problem.
They buy to make themselves feel good. But it's like a drug, it's only a temporary "high". My ex was hooked on those TV shopping channels, Home Shopping Network (HSN) and QVC. She'd buy stuff just to feel good and then she'd feel guilty and send about half of it back. I didn't know half the stuff she was buying, she'd hide it from me.
I never knew how much money I was making until I got divorced. Suddenly, I had TONS of money in my bank accounts because it wasn't being spent behind my back. Fortunately, I'm a Spartan and don't need much. So I invest it. :D
KOKORO - July 6, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
buy a bike bro !!!!
a good dl 1000 v strom !.
Thermopyles - July 6, 2007 03:15 PM (GMT)
:D I love this thread!
Bike sounds like a good idea, fast, fun and cheap (forget dangerous, where in US they have NO IDEA how to drive with bikes around)
Hey Kokkoro, you must be married, because that hostess sounds like wife material  Do you have good gold shoppes at Ayvalik? I think to go there and get some Turkish/Indian gold. in '08 when I'm back in Lesvos, God willing... Just teach me how to tell them not to fack with me because I know the real thing/cost!
Landos, Mantis is the person that reads others people thoughts - similar to psychic. Women always expect you to already know what they want, think, and feel :drink2: And that was my point also, a "nice Greek girl" wont be any different!!
Landos - July 6, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
In America you are not only expected to provide a home, car, food, medical coverage and other material substances for your wife. You're also responsible to MAKE SURE SHE'S HAPPY. If she's not happy, it's the husbands fault.
Women's advocates in America tell women if they are not happy, go out and divorce your husband. Take half of everything he has earned and walk away. It's HIS fault that you're not happy, so your actions are justified.
What an unfair responsibility to put on someone, you are responsible for another person's state of mind! If they are not happy, it must be something your'e doing wrong.
Do men place that burden on their wives? Hell no! Keep a clean house and take care of my needs once in awhile and you're home free! Men acknowledge that they and only they are responsible for their own sense of happiness. And that's the way it should be.
I'll never marry another American wife. NFW!

Hey anyone know what the divorce laws are in Greece and Turkey?
KOKORO - July 7, 2007 05:45 AM (GMT)
haha ;)
i never been to ayvalık but inside the city there must be normal small gold shops .
there are coins that have atatürk pic on them they are small but standart.
and breclets no marking 18 or 20
one full coin is like 200 ytl now = 150 dolars full coın
nearly 1 gr is 27 ytl 1 gr is 20 dolars.
so if you will come this side dont let them robe you !!! ;)
basicly the jewlwery guy will look at the weight of the gold piece
if it is 100 grams it will be like 27 X 100 = 2700 ytl = 2045 dolars.
from the new year dolar incresaed % 33 in Turkey !
better than most of the other assets.
i m not maried i prefer to date with girls and spent less now a days because most of my friends get divorce in 2 3 years. <_<
they are basicly never happy !!! woman !!
and for divorcing woman cantake your underwear here !!! ( in turkey )
but before you mary if u have 2 houses and a land she cant take that !
before mariying ıf u have aset she cant take it ..!
