The spirit of Hellenism is in the Diaspora, Lord. The Greek Government knows that. That's why Karamanlis visited Australia and the US recently.

The cause of most Greek problems is in the deadbeat politicians and civil servants they have. The solution is in the Diaspora. When we get the vote, we're going to change things 'back home'!

Lord - July 2, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
as a greek from the diaspora...(Germany) i dont doubt about your words...
Indeed the greeks abroad....keep the spirit alive i might say...
But ...its time to wake some of this fad ass politicans...to spent some serious money ...on adveritise the country...
why not via such movies....
Think abouted how...easy we could gain with a good movie...on all levels...
(aka tourism-history knowledge-poltical knowldge etc etc)

Lord, The best publicity Greece had in recent times was the 2004 Athens Olympics. I talked to a lot of Americans who said, "Hey, after watching the Olympic Games were going to stop off in Greece this summer.".

Most Americans are pretty unsophisticated about overseas travel, but when they're watching the Olympic Marathon and they see the runners go past a McDonalds Restaurant or a Kentucky Fried Chicken they feel comforted about travelling there! I know that sounds trite, but there it is.

I travelled down to Mexico last week for business and I was stuck in Houston, Texas for a few hours. I was listening to one of the Northwest Airlines ticket agents tell her friends about her recent vacation to Mykonos and Santorini and how much she enjoyed it. Further, the NWA in flight magazine had a great article on visiting Athens.

Tourism is picking up in Greece. They had record tourists last season and will again this season. Greece is picking up a lot of the tourists who have been going to Turkey but are turned off by the violence, terrorism and the recent murders of journalists and Christian missionaries. Turkey is starting to look like Lebanon to a lot of prospective tourists!

PEGASUS - July 2, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
LORD ,the disaster will come soon ..the first tourist who will visit the THERMOPYLAE and will find an HIGHWAY acros the battlefild ..thast a shame on my opinion..the people cant even go from the statue of leonidas to the battlefield because of the highway i remember i take 10 minutes to get to the other side because it was dangerous to cross the road ..shame shame ..

bridge or tunel !!! DAM -gamoto :wall: :Cursing: :bash:

Lord - July 2, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
Yes Pegasus you are right...i can remember how you told me last summer...

@Landos...

You know how a olympic game costs ...lol
I understand your point....
But i am much more interested in seeing some serious money involved in holywood...
How should i say it to you...
lets say the ministery wants to advertise on CNN for one month ok?
You know how much this costs...?
and finally how many people are going to see...it ..and finally beeing convinced abouted...?

on the other hand...
You have a good movie like the 300...and go see how many hits after the movie...were on sites about ancient greece...lol
maybe the movie wasnt a true docu...
but many people...were interested to learn more abouted...and finally...got the hit for greece...
all this with one MOVie...
the other point of corse is...when greece has good athlets...Sport is indeed...the best advertisement for a country...

I was watching that Greek lady sprinter win the 400 meter hurdles. Was watching it with my ex-wife. After the big win and watching the accolades from all the Greek fans she looked over at me and I had tears running down my cheeks. She asked me what was the matter and I told her, "You wouldn't understand, it's a GREEK thing!"

:applause:

Yeah...indeed...

Concerning Fani Halkia:

In certain countries she was featured as having been doped and the TV presenter during the whole duration of the 400m hurdles spoke about the blotches in her face and how this was supposedly related to a supplement.

Landos - July 3, 2007 03:45 AM (GMT)
What countries were those, the ones who lost to her?

The US commentator was very complimentary-towards her and towards the Greek crowd. I wish I had that whole race on file.

123-t - July 3, 2007 11:01 AM (GMT)
It was in Germany.

Landos - July 3, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
To hell with them. They're bad sports and can't take a pasting with good grace, especially from a "smaller, inferior, european nation" like Greece.

We whooped em in Basketball, we whooped em in Football. Whooping the Germans is a lot of fun! :applause:

Lord - July 3, 2007 04:14 PM (GMT)
beeing born in germany raised with there...style...
Ihave to say Landos has a point...
123-t...German are often arrogant with other nations who are better than them...you know what i mean...

anyway...no one in europe likes them...and they know it... ;)

123-t - July 3, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
Yes, the "if-I-havent-won-then-the-others-played-with-wrong-rules-complex".

Churchill had them figured out when he said "Germans are at your feet or at your throat.". Not that the English are all that much better, in fact they're much the same. The Germans are a little more "Klingonish" in their mannerisms, but that's about it.

As a Hellene I LOVE to beat the major European powers at any contest-sports, economics, whatever. I want to see the day when the Greeks have the highest aggregate GDP on the continent. To go along with their fine climate and unchallenged historical accomplishments.

We can do it, all it'll take is some hard work by all of us. And a lot of guidance from those of us in the Diaspora.

Lord - July 4, 2007 12:11 PM (GMT)
 excactly...also if the weather is bad....(to sunny)....the wind to strong...the beer warm...etc etc...
