Title: S-300
Description: capability

How capable is this fine system against stealth planes?
And is it upgradeable.
The HAF has one of the best AA defence around.Sure hope it stays at the cutting edge.
And what possible advantage would the TAF gain in photographing the s-300?Seems like a waste of fuel since missile defence systems are portable.

ΙΜΗΟ, the S-300 is portable, but this doesn't mean it can be deployed everywhere.
Therefore I assume, that by taking photos of certain (suspected) areas, where the system might be deployed, they can make sure whether there are works under way in them, which in turn increases the propability of the suspected and photographed site being indeed one of alternative sites, that the system might be deployed.
Also, besides taking photos a reconaisance aircraft might also carry pods for SIGINT, in case the system is operating.
:2cents:

Thanks for the insight.
From what you say I gather that the TAF is not only flying over Greek territorial waters but over Crete.................a long way from Turkey.
1) If thats the case it is very provocative.
2) They are very worried about the s-300.
Also I read in Australia that the f-22 stealth is proving to be dissapointing re its stealth capabilities.Apparantly, the Russians have demonstrated that they can use interference in the mobile phone spectrum to detect stealth aircraft.Does anyone know more?

Depending on the altitude and the sensors carried, they do not have to overfly directly their area of interest, but can also fly several miles away.
Besides, it is not exactly a revelation, that TuAF not only flies in the (disputed from Turkey) greek airspace (6-10nm), but occasionaly also in the non-disputed airspace (0-6nm) as well (especially over small islands)
Reg. Crete, AFAIK, they are flying close to it, but I am not aware of a specific distance mentioned.
As for them being worried about the S-300, every nation is "worried"-interested in the capabilities (military and others) of other nations.
Nothing extraordinary, IMHO.
Reg. the F-22, I haven't heard anything.
The "dissapointment" is IMHO journalistic exageration, there may be some truth in it, but not to the extent they imply.

Didn't know about that.. Aren't we buying PAC again?

PAC?? again?? I hope not, we have enough. I also heard about a possible S-400 purchase. Lets put them on Cyprus! :naughty:

AFAIK, not very. But S-400 is supposed to have much better capibilities in that field, so they say...

Not worth it, the upgrade is basicly the S-400, so better to just buy the new system.

Sjmygian said it well. Problem is, with what weapon would they hit them?

I dont think Turkey is trying to locate the s-300 in crete this is B.S.we can detecte them flying over crete. No one nows were the s-300 are they may not even be in crete.
The s-400 has a range of 400km, we cant compare it to the s-300 that has a range of 200km. I hope we get this system, with a range of 400km it would do
wonders in the aegean. And yes they can detecte stealth .By the time Turkey gets f-35 we will have the neuron so no worries.
