Title: Medieval II Total War
Cid - November 6, 2006 01:22 AM (GMT)
On November 10, Medieval II is going to be released in Europe. This Total War sequel takes place between the years 1080 and 1530. You can play among a great number of European and Middle Eastern states of the period, including the Byzantine, Selçuk and Ottoman Empires.

PS: The Fraction colour of the Selçuks and perhaps also of the Ottomans is Green-Yellow. I find this annoying since it doesnt fit with the Turks at all. Especially not the green flag with a yellow crescent.

The community is conflicting about whether M2TW is good or not. Apparently the AI is much better than in RTW but there are some problems that were to solved by a patch on the day of release according to one of the developers of CA. However no such patch was released. Problems with AI included the inability of units to keep their cohesion, eventually spreading all over the tactical map. The diplomacy AI is much more robuse, i.e. no more allies stabbing you in the back in the next turn the alliance was cemented. Now AI opponents will respect borders, concentrate forces and have some sort of a strategic plan. I haven't played the game yet (possibly next weekend) but i am not sure i will even get it unless they release this first path.
The modding community is already very active and there are plans to implement a hardcore historical mod known as Europa Barbarorum (originally in RTW) using the M2TW engine. Several other mods are being developed as well. Given the modability of certain aspects of AI and general behaviour in the tactical & strategic maps i am very confident that AI can be greatly enhanced to the level of a ferocious killing machine by talented modders.

For the fans a small trick to play the locked and unplayable fractions for both RTW and M2TW.
Go to the game directory and in specific to:
data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/
Open the file descr_strat.txt
Cut paste the unlocable/unplayable fractions you wish to be able to play from their original location to the playable list.
Avoid doing this for the rebels and Rome/Papal fractions (game crashes).
Now save the file.
Once you run the game all fraction will be available to you.
Remember to rename the original .txt to .bak and then edit and save as .txt, so you can divert to the original file easily.
HAVE FUN !!!

I am too bored to write a whole review, but the in all the game feels like a glorified mod. The AI still is bad (battle/campaign) which is all that matters to me. I wouldn't care having the original MTW graphics as long as the AI was the best out there.
