Title: Lesvos and Ayvalik

saladin - September 14, 2006 01:13 AM (GMT)
I'm sure Thermopyles knew this. Anyway, there is an article on Hurriyet that says Lesvos and Ayvalik are already in very good relations. Apperantly, since Turkey is cheaper, there is ever increasing trend that Greeks come to Ayvalik for shopping. In 2004, 25000 people came to Ayvalik from Lesvos. In 2005, it was 52000. That is almost half of the island.

I will translate more over the weekend.
ps: I was not sure where this should have been post. Feel free to move it whereever you think it feets.

Yes indeed, Lesvos and Ayvalik have long had much better relations than the respective capitals. Many of those numbers are tourists on Lesvos wanting to see a bit of Turkey. And yes, most of them are indeed Lesvos folk  It's amazing what meeting the "bad" other side will do to someone. We all see were people, just want to build a life. Having that exchange facilitates good relations through first-hand understanding. I also belive that more inter-dependance would help our relations alot IMO. But its just difficult to accomplish this while there are many counter-pressures resisting so much... Thses two cities should indeed be models for our gov's :)

Well this situation should not be surprising. Lesvos is much closer to Ayvalik than to Athens. It is much easier for someone living in Lesvos to go to Ayvalik for shopping.

Thursday is the market day of Ayvalik. Many Greeks come from Lesvos for the day to buy things that are either difficult to find in Lesvos or expensive. Unfortunately it is not that easy for us to go to the other side as we need a visum even the trip is just for the day.

When I was there, I had seen thousands of Greeks coming from Lesvos to shopping areas and Cunda Fish&Meat restaurants. Had a chance to talk with a lovely Greek girl, she had invited me to Lesvos and I brought him to "Fly Disco" in Ayvalik...
