United Nations and Sony hacked by Turkish cracker in support of the Muslim cyber-jihad PDF Print E-mail User Rating: / 16 PoorBest Written by Roberto Preatoni Tuesday, 15 August 2006
unA few hours after the United Nations voted the resolution for the Lebanon peace keeping forces, the United Nation and Sony Philippines websites have been compromised by Turskish attackers Eno7, apparently in protest for the current Middle-East situation.
In the same defacements it is also announced an international crackers coalition featuring, for the first time ever, crackers from Cuba.
Mirror of the defaced site can be viewed here The website has been defaced on a secondary page (currently under reconstruction), a typical Turkish logo appearing on the page followed by an English language statement (a bit sluggish as usual) reporting a political statement...
"A SPECIAL ATTENTION FOR THE UNITED NATIONS
Until that time you just watched the civil and innocent people who are dying in Iraq , Palestina and Africa. Israel hit the Lebanon , destroyed the childeren and hit down the towers of UN. The supporter Israel challenges to the world and we are asking what your mission is in this bleeding world, you UNITED NATIONS.You are not connecting civilizations just connecting your advantages. We are not your toys..
If your democracy and your human rights are these so we came here to teach you the civilization and the correct human rights. We are AYYILDIZ TIM the childeren of Republic of Turkey.
REST OF THAT
either INDEPENDENCE or DEATH
neutrality just not exist in the face of murder, doing nothing to stop this is in fact to choosing,it is not be neutral."
The website, running on NetBSD with Apache has been probably compromised through a CMS bug as it is mostly happening in the recent times. Attackers reported "administrative password stealing/sniffing" as attack methodology. Zone-H is currently not in the position to confirm it or not.
This is not the first time Turkish crackers attack profiled targets with political motivations, since the war in Lebanon started we accounted thenth of thousands of such attacks, mostly performed by Turkish attackers but also by Iranian, Indonesian, Pakistani, Saudi Arabian, Sirian, Moroccan and Algerian.
gasAnother victim of cracker's actions is Sony Philippines website, once again attacked by eno7. In the posted message the attacker is blaming US, UK and Israel leaders for the current happenings. The attacker posted also a quite self-explanatory picture, portraiting a gas pump pointed like a gun at one child's head.
In the same defacement, attackers announced that a massive cyberprotest is currently being organized by a coalitiion of crackers from Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Turkey, Germany, Dominican Republic, Peru, Spain, Venezuela, Guatemala and for the first time ever by Cuban crackers (!) as reported by the scheme posted below

Stupid script-kiddies and even dumber admins. Nothing to brag about, but everything to get fired over.

Well i like the idea of protesting against the system.. and UN is a part of the system that exists for no practical reason in our days.. it is just a smokescreen for justifying the actions of those having the power when they need some sort of legality... when UN is really needed he just isn't there..
p.s. The link of the mirror site is suspiciously non responsive saladin... it may not be that innocent.. beware of troyans...
KOKORO - August 16, 2006 07:49 AM (GMT)
Yes same idea with DouriosYpnos.
Żnspite of blue Un soldier we would put blue smurfs ( old cartoon . small blue people against a evil magition garamel) :D
Un Nations is just a aproval place of the strong. thats all. They try to do a job but they cant. and who pays the money bells the rings. Usa pays % 40 of the operations so .. what ever he wants that would hapen..
Bad world we are living in it.. Like a crime full neigbour hood. Police is doing job with the mafia boss.
Kaan

I could care less about the UN. But having some idiotic juveniles using exploit scripts is pathetic and not hacking. Too bad so many in the press report on such events with much bravado and pride!
DouriosYpnos - August 16, 2006 02:46 PM (GMT)
So, if I understand well Digenis, your problem is with their methods and not with their objective.. right?
Are you in the IT indusry? Any suggestions for better hacking techniques? :)

Dourie,
Yes, I am in IT. I have a problem with little kids that use "scripts" that target well-known exploits and then pass themselves off as "hackers". It is bad enough that these morons think they're "hot sh*t", but it is even worse when they get this kind of press.
What should happen is that the IT "professionals" that run these sites should be fired for gross incompetence. It is very VERY easy to download any number of security vulnerability scanners (like Nessus) to tell you how many holes exist on any system. If you can't do that much, you're a moron. You are also a moron if you think you're a "genius" (or a hacker) for knowing how to use these tools.
Regarding "objectives", I have no problem with most cases of defacement (where the index page is replaced and no serious damage is performed). I suppose this is something like graffiti. But where political graffiti gets some respect, "tagging" does not.
DouriosYpnos - August 17, 2006 02:28 PM (GMT)
Nice.. well i'm in the IT business too Digenis and i will agree with you that those IT professionals that run those sites must be blamed for such attacks but i wouldn't blame the hackers for taking advantage of "easy" security holes...
Anyway, hacking is not cracking.. so you don't need to perform spectacular tricks in order to achive a goal.. you just need to find a hole and sneek in.. the easiest the hole the better for the hacker.. actually most hackers don't rely on extensive IT knowledge (programming, etc) but only in their ability to trick uses into letting them in.. sometimes even without touching a keyboard for that and most of the times by using such tools like port & hole scanners, trojans, spyware, etc.. you don't need that much for beeing a hacker.. a cracker it's a different story though..

Why flaming some "kids" for protesting? They didn't harm anyone or anything...
In my opinion a very nice way to protest against a certain policy.

DEA,
Would you share the same opinion if they did that to YOUR web site? Especially if your web site was used to generate MONEY?
How would you feel is some "kids" defaced your house, car, or business with graffiti? Worse yet, what if they also caused damage to your property?
There is a reason why these acts are ILLEGAL.

If you did something terrible, kill someone for instance wouldn't it be fair if someone from the family of the one you killed, killed you in return?
Actions don't come by thin air something provoked those actions. It is the cause of the actions that we should check and not the actions them selves.

DEA,
Excuses are like @ssholes, everyone has one and they all stink.
Go take a look at any defacement list, and you will see private, business, and non-profit sites that have NOTHING to do with any political situation. But what you suggest is quite honestly the weakest excuse I could think off.
If someone was trying to kill your family, you would protect them and try to kill them instead. Anyone that has a problem with what Israel, the USA, or anyone else is doing can very easily volunteer to pick up a gun. Instead these cowardly internet "warriors" deface a Sony site in the Philippenes!
If you have something meaningful to say, you can create a web site of your own. You could of course take the "cracker" route and you might just face a few years in prison. Either way I'm happy because every compromise is additional work for IT professionals and firms, and a nice long sentence for the moronic zit-faced "warriors".
