| US hails meeting of Turkish, Greek chiefs of staff Saturday, July 29, 2006 ANKARA - Turkish Daily News The United States has welcomed a meeting between the chiefs of general staff of Turkey and Greece. "Of course, we support good and friendly relations and confidence-building measures being developed between our good friends and NATO allies, Greece and Turkey,” U.S. State Department acting spokesman Tom Casey said during a press briefing when asked about the new Greek-Turkish military rapprochement. “And obviously, resolution of any differences that exist between those countries is something we'd support,” he added. Panayiotis Hinofotis, the first Greek chief of staff to visit Turkey since the 1974 military intervention in Cyprus, arrived in Turkey on Wednesday for an official three-day visit aimed at improving bilateral ties between the two countries in the military sphere. The Greek chief of staff's talks with his Turkish counterpart, Gen. Hilmi Özkök, were closed to the press. The two top military officials exchanged ideas on military issues as part of the confidence-building measures, said a written statement released by the Turkish General Staff General Secretariat yesterday. Mutual visits by the force commanders of the two sides; joint military exercises planned to be held between the two countries; peace support operations exercised by the Turkish and Greek Armed Forces; NATO's enlargement policy; and developments in the Middle East were among the issues discussed between Hinofotis and Özkök, said the statement. After his talks with Gen. Özkök in Ankara, the Greek chief of staff traveled to Istanbul yesterday, where he met with Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartolomeos. After wrapping up his talks the visiting admiral left for Greece. Intense efforts were reportedly under way on both sides of the Aegean for this visit, but the idea of a possible visit by the Greek chief of staff was first made public in June when Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis was in Turkey. The visit by the Greek chief of staff is believed to be very important for dialogue between the top military officials from the two countries. |
