Short translation: Russia tries to find an alternative for it's Ukraine based Sivastopol naval base. The agreement of Russian control over this base will end in 2017. Russia has started negotiation with Syria to found naval bases in the Syrian port cities Tartus and Laskiye.

I think more that Syria is trying very hard to survive...invitating the russians there.
another problem is...how many vessels wants Russia to station there...? adn finally for what purpose?
articels in greece are saying (a bit sarcastic) the Russian again in the Med ..for "helping out" NATO... <_<

I've read years ago, that the Russian Navy wanted to build a naval base in Syria. It would have been a base for the Kusnezof carrier(so that they wont have to ask all the time permission to let it pass the dardanelia ) and subs.It is clear that the Russians want to have a military presence in the Gulf....

Question: What happened to the Kusnezov carrier? Its some time I haven't heard of it... <_<

??? Is it?

What makes you sure, the common Orthodox religion?

Why would a Russian naval presence in the Mediteranean be good for Greece.... or Turkey...... or would it be not so good for both of us?

KonTim - June 3, 2006 07:07 PM (GMT)
Well Nutuk that's a nice question. At generally is in interest of any nation to the region the existance of equalized power in order to balance US presence. Now as it concerns Greece that's to good because we all know that Russia is a traditionally hostile to Turkey nation-not to relegious or cultural factors but to strictly geopolitical reasons. The recent aproach between Russia and Turkey must been seen as a tactical movement of both sides to balance US presence to the region-it's not a long-term existancable aproach. To the interests of Greece is significant the existance of a powerfull Russia to the flank of Turkey not permitting her having a key-role to the region.Of course that is something bad for you as a Turk but here we are talking to geopolitics not seeing it by national wishfulls.

Re Kontim,

Thanks for your answer.
I am of other opinion, I am not so sure when foreign powers come to the region.

To give you an example question: how good was it that the British established bases on Cyprus.

To draw an analogy how good will it be if the Russians establish bases in Syria and the Americans bases in Bulgaria?

What's the next step, Russian bases in F.Y.R.O.M?

The bottom line of my opinion, foreign powers in the region is not such a good thing.

The international name for that country is F.Y.R.O.M. Unless you mean the Greek province Macedonia, which I doubt.

Russian Military Denies Seeking Mediterranean Naval Base in Syria
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, MOSCOW

Russian military officials June 2 denied a report that Moscow hopes to create a permanent naval base in Syria that would give it a Mediterranean outpost and represent a major shift in the regional security balance.
Russia has begun work on deepening the Syrian port of Tartus and is also widening a channel in another Syrian port, Latakia, the Kommersant newspaper said, citing an official at Russia’s embassy in Damascus, Vladimir Zimin.
The newspaper noted that Russia is seeking alternative accommodation for the Black Sea fleet, based in the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol, as it may have to vacate that base when its lease expires in 2017.
”As an official at Russian naval headquarters explained, the creation in Tartus of a fully fledged naval base should help Russia redeploy the naval and supply ships leaving Sevastopol,” Kommersant said.
A base in Syria would be in addition to its expanding Black Sea military port at Novorossysk.
Tartus has hosted a supply point for the Soviet and then the Russian navies since the 1970s, the newspaper noted.
”This can’t be considered information — this is complete nonsense,” said an unnamed admiral quoted by the ITAR-TASS news agency.
”The Russian government hasn’t had and doesn’t have any plans to move the Black Sea fleet from Ukraine. Our fleet is staying in Crimea at least until 2017,” he said.
The agency quoted a “senior defense ministry” official as also denying the report: “One would have to be crazy to leave Ukraine before 2017. So why then sign an agreement?”
According to Kommersant, “For the first time since the Soviet Union’s collapse, Russia will create its own military base outside former Soviet borders, which will allow Moscow to conduct its own political game in the Middle East.”
The new Russian naval base in Syria would be protected by a long-range Russian air defense system, the S-300PMU-2 Favorit, staffed by Russian personnel, the newspaper said, citing an unnamed defense ministry official.
The system could also protect a significant portion of Syria, the paper said.
The newspaper said that a permanent base would help in Russian naval cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Russian ships are currently undergoing training to join a NATO counter-terrorism operation in the Mediterranean, Active Endeavour.
But a permanent naval base would also change “the disposition of forces in the region,” the paper noted.
”It means Russia henceforth taking the Syrian regime into its care and protection,” Kommersant said.
”Moscow’s stake in Damascus would definitely damage relations between Russia and Israel and could persuade the Iranian regime to be even less compliant in talks on the Iranian nuclear program,” the paper said.

Don't know if it's better for Greece or not but i'm sure this will heaten up things around this neighbourhood..One thing's for sure Fyrom is definitely not going to allow russia establish a base in it's soil..More likely US on the other hand can you imagine a soviet base next to a US one in Bulgaria? :D :D :D :D :mgun: :mgun:

Yes Cameleon although I don't mind you editing names of a certain country into FYROM or whatever I agree with Kiziroglu, overmoderating on places where it is unnecesarry works frustrative.

It's simply overkill when Greek mods edit the name Macedonia and Turkish mods edit the name Kurdistan, it's laughable to say it softly.
