@Lord: Thank you for the pics. Are there any weapon systems that the ship is fitted for but not with?
Saturn,
I believe you are referring to the Harpoon? I know Janes Fighting Ships has been reporting for many years that these class of boats (actually the older versions) were fitted for but still not with Harpoon.
I think the TN is looking for something along the lines of these boats for it's new 16 patrol boat requirement.
Dear Efeler,
I think the design philosophies and operational concepts of Greek Kasos class patrol boats and newly projected Turkish costal patrol boats are quite different.
400-ton Turkish patrol boats (or harbor protection vessels) will be equipped with ASW equipment; sonars, ASW rockets, depth charges etc. They will have a 40 mm twin gun, and two 12.7 mm MGs. These vessels will exclusively be used to defend harbors, or the straits. On the other hand Kasos class vessels are bigger, thus having a better endurance and seakeeping capability in littoral waters.
Both countries select certain designs that fit their operational requirements. It's not a mere coincidence that Turkey invests a lot in ASW capable platforms in the air and at sea: from MPAs to corvettes and patrol boats. On the other hand, Greece seem to stick to more conventional patrol designs as in Kasos class. There is no corvette projects, nor new MPA or ASW capable patrol boat projects currently, as far as I know. One can safely assume that until and unless Turkey will go for AIP submarines, this trend may prevail in Greek Navy.
However I think it would be better for Greek Navy, if Danish Stanflex design was adopted but not the Osprey class as a point of departure for a customized Greek patrol craft, since the former has the superb versatility and mission flexibility advantages. This advantage is translated in naval concept as "multi-mission, single role." In other words in comparably shorter times (not months, weeks, or days, but hours), mission modules on board the Stanflex class can be replaced with another module. A patrol boat Stanflex can be converted into a mine layer, a submarine tender, a salvage boat, a SAR vessel, a submarine hunter, a FAC, etc.
The last but not least, I think the main deficiency of Kasos class is that these vessels do not have sonars, which IMHO limits their operational range to a high degree.
My best
Hakan
