Long live the Assembly, long live the Republic!

It is unbelievable that representitives from all over the country came together (remember that if we discard the brief attempts of 1877, nobody knew anything about the parlimentery government until 1908) to discuss the country's situation first in Erzurum then Sivas. I doubt all of the representitives were aware of democratic process let alone the concept of the republic. Yet in 1920, they started the process of changing the future of a nation. There were patriots in the first parliment just like there were betrayers. Not much different than today. Lets hope that, never in its existence, the turkish people will need to meet together to face an invasion force again. Lets hope that, never in its existence, the turkish people will see their parliment meeting in any city other than Ankara. Let hope that, the turkish people will forever protect their republic and its institutions.
God bless the founders. May they rest in heaven.
The republic of iternity, may we never fail you!!!

It is very important that Turkish Grand Assembly could have been established a few days (12 days as I remember) after the Meclis-i Mebusan (House of Representatives) had been closed by Sultan Vahideddin, apparently under pressure by occupying forces in Istanbul.
The second most important factor was that Mustafa Kemal did not use such quite relevant excuses as "we're going through a war," "we're in a transition process," "we're going under a very delicate process" etc etc. all of which could have been used to justify a totalitarian regime, a dictatorship, but instead he insisted on the power of people via Grand Assembly.
And thanks our ancestors we have the motto:
SOVEREIGNTY PERTAINS UNCONDITIONALY TO THE PEOPLE
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
