"This is what modernism means to us, and this is why this new Turkey will ultimately be an asset to the European Union.
They quote passages from the Quran and from the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad which read like a business manual. They tell me, it's important to create factories, to create jobs - it's what our religion tells us to do."
I was there last week in Kayseri. According to me it is as same as other Turkish cities in terms of aproaching to the religion-state-modern life. We are unique in the modern world with our model. Secular,democratic...I m proud of it. Calvenism or not, the real Islam teaches to everyone "read, work, be fine, well behave to others, respect to human, dont kill or hurt someone" these are unique words, crucial words. Some terrorists who hijacked this religion for their secret agendas cannot represent anyone.
Peace at home, peace at the world.
note: There is no "Modern Islam" idiom., Islam is already modern and front of us with his farsighted, balanced, complicated thoughts.

This motto from Ataturk is often misinterpretted and eventually given a new interpretation.
It does not refer for any wish or notion to be an active player in world politics of establishing and promoting peace, like many people today see when using the motto.
It actually refers to the isolationist politics of the early Republican years.
Based upon the prerequisite that Kayseri´s wealth increase is closely linked to the citizen´s work morale, someone can easily conclude that with the appropriate sanctionative system (work to gain god´s approval) and the transfer of a specific perspective (e.g. god´s approval reflects the "social" position not only on earth but also in heaven) people are motivated to struggle for a "good" common cause, i.e. economic development.
As said above, there is no such thing as mordeninsg islam. It is already morden, yet with in the limits so that every one can enjoy. Islam always promated science, peace, freedom, ecominic etc. Turkey, maylasia, arabs are a good exmaple of that. Though i like these countries to do the same in science too.
But yea, islam is'nt what most westerns think it is. Again like i said before, don't judge the whole muslim population by a few extermists deeds
