I'll need to translate this article to get the info I need for the Wiki articles I'm putting together - they'll obviously be set up differently for Wikipedia.
I've already translated the first page... I'll post the complete translation of this article here when I'm done. Please be patient, though. I also have a day job, you know... ;)

Lord a few quick questions
1)what are the greek special forces and what is each unit comprised of
ex:air assualt brigade-2,000 men
2)are these special forces deployed in forward areas ex:thrace, aegean island
3)if not what is the force size on the aeegan islands?
ex:chios(were im from)is 904 sqkm, seven nautical miles from turkey and has a population of about 55,000-60,000 ppl.what would be stationed on chios roughly 1,000-2,000 soldiers?battalion, regiment,or brigade?
digenis - February 14, 2006 05:28 PM (GMT)
Boulio,
Most special forces units are stationed on the mainland, although there are soldiers/groups that are assigned to forward areas. For example, the Marines are in Volos and Chalkida, while the Airborne are in Aspropyrgo and Crete.
Chios is protected by the 96 ADTE (
http://www.army.gr/n/g/archive/signs/html/96_adte.html), which is organized like a "taxiarchia"/brigade. The "normal" size of a brigade is roughly 4,000 men.
boulio - February 14, 2006 05:46 PM (GMT)
thanks digenis,
what are the greek main spf units and there size
theres the 71st airborne brigade
theres a marine brigade
any other ones????
also is it safe to say that the smaller islands like ie patmos or leros or for that matter kastelorrizo are protected with much smaller forces lets say battalion size 600-800 men or a couple of companies 120-150 men per company.

Boulio,
There is a thread with such details:
http://s7.invisionfree.com/worldconflictsf...p?showtopic=488And here is some additional background information:
ARMY:
Δυνάμεις Καταδρομών (Dynamis Katadromon - Commandos): In 1965 the 1st Tactical Commando Command was formed, which was renamed in 1967 as the 1st Commando Regiment.
Αμφίβιοι Καταδρομείς (Amphibie Katadromis - Amphibious Commandos): Due to the demands imposed in the Eastern Aegean Sea, the 13th Amphibious Commando Regiment was created. Their primary mission is to disrupt a possible Turkish invasion.
Δυνάμεις Αλεξιπτωτιστών (Dynamis Alexiptotiston - Parachute/Airborne Forces): In 1955 Hellas established a parachuting school that trained members of the special forces. In April of 1965 the 2nd Tactical Commando Command was formed, which was renamed in October 1967 as the 2nd Parachute Regiment.
E.T.A. (Ειδικό Τμήμα Αλεξιπτωτιστών - Idiko Tmima Alexiptotiston - Special Parachute/Airborne Unit) : The most elite special forces group in Hellas, it has a very unorthodox training program and organization. This unit of the Army is composed of career officers and NCO's that follow extensive programs in Hellas (MYK, KEAP) and other NATO countries (ILRRP).
Δυνάμεις Πεζοναυτών (Dynamis Pezonauton - Marines): In 1967 the 32nd Infantry Regiment was renamed as the 32nd Marine Regiment, and organized along the lines of the US Marine Corps. In 1974 this force was reorganized into the 32nd Marine Brigade.
71 Aerometaferomeni Taxiarhia Pezikou (Airmobile Infantry Brigade).
NAVY:
Μονάδα Υποβρύχιων Καταστροφών (Monada Ypobrihion Katastrofon - Underwater Demolition Unit): The Hellenic Navy recognized the need for its own specialized forces, and early on in 1957 developed a scuba diving school. This unit received its current name in 1967, and its training and mission resembles the unorthodox warfare of the US Navy SEAL teams.
AIR FORCE:
31 M.E.E. (Monada Eidikon Epiheirision - Special Operations Unit).

Boulio,
Since you are from Chios, you might be interested in the fairly recent local reaction to changes with the armored company's (96 ΕΑΡΜΕΘ) location:

KonTim - February 28, 2006 10:38 AM (GMT)
Chios is been protected by 96th ΑΔΤΕ a enforced-brigade formation. Also to the island is stationed a Amphibious Raiders Squadron(-)-the 96th ΕΤΕΘ.All the military units not only at Chios but also to all islands are undermenned. The 4000 men reported by Digenis/Lord-I'm not sure- is very optemistic number. Also to Chios-i'm reffering to the newpaper article-there is a powerful "passifists block" leading by a well knowed journalist of leftish/internationalist stands. That journalist few years ago managed to make Army leadership to get an Amphibious Raiders officer been transfered from the island because he and his men were saughting anti-Turkish marches during a military parade...
digenis - February 28, 2006 03:18 PM (GMT)
KonTim,
I mentioned the "standard" size of the brigade. We all know that most Hellenic Army units are not at 100% staffing levels. On the islands, it is expected that the active members would depart (with all weapons) to their staging areas and that is where the reservists would join up (to provide the units with the required manpower).

Great scan! :applause: I like to see some kevlar helmets out there. Do you see that pic with the snipers, he's shooting the Barrett .50 with no bipod from what looks like the gonipetos position :horror: either hes super-good or he's aiming close!
Boulio, I know of at least 1 frog battalion close to the border.

yes winter picture nice !!
did you look at the pants !

does your army use english gore tex for winter ??
or do you have other winter pics??
:)
baris75 - July 25, 2006 10:42 AM (GMT)
KOKORO you seem to be camo freak right?
Yes, that is British dpm camo. I have seen Greek Soldiers with various camo paterns such as MARPAD, French Lizard, woodland, desert woodland and even latest with a desert MARPAd.
KOKORO - July 25, 2006 11:25 AM (GMT)
yes
like to see new camos ! Around the world. after the army never wear them but like to see new stuf !. becuse is a hide and seek games part .And some do it coretly some copy some do it as art !. and who does it coretly wins .
so basicly ύ realy like them !!
Greece has their own goretex jacket production companies why would they need to buy british camos even just for goretex!!! :doubt: strange
but even for us Turkey used to have may be 5 or six difrent camos during the last 10 years . Polis, difretnt ,army diffrent color , navy difrent color and patern .. it must be real stantartization.
well stay well
