New Turkish film reflects public’s anti-US sentiment
Movie opening today is latest in recent genre demonizing USA

Reuters
A Turkish man looks at a poster for the movie ‘Valley of the Wolves — Iraq’ at a mall in Ankara yesterday. The film, which features Western actors and has dialogue in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish and English, cost 8.3 million euros to make.

By Benjamin Harvey - The Associated Press

ISTANBUL - In the most expensive Turkish movie ever made, American soldiers in Iraq crash a wedding and pump a little boy full of lead in front of his mother.

They kill dozens of innocent people with random machine-gun fire, shoot the groom in the head, and drag those left alive to Abu Ghraib prison — where a Jewish doctor cuts out their organs, which he sells to rich people in New York, London and Tel Aviv.

“Valley of the Wolves — Iraq” — set to open in Turkey today — feeds off the increasingly negative feelings many Turks harbor toward their longtime NATO allies: Americans.

The movie, which reportedly cost some $10 million (8.3 million euros), is a work of fiction and does not purport to level allegations against American troops. It is part of a new genre of popular culture that demonizes the United States.

The film comes on the heels of a novel called “Metal Storm” about a war between Turkey and the USA, which has been a best seller for months.

One recent opinion poll revealed the depth of the hostility in Turkey toward Americans: 53 percent of Turks who responded to the 2005 Pew Global Attitudes survey associated Americans with the word “rude;” 70 percent with “violent;” 68 percent with “greedy;” and 57 percent with “immoral.”

Advance tickets are already selling out across Turkey for the film, which has dialogue in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish and English. In addition to Turkey, the film is set to be shown in more than a dozen other countries — including the United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, Denmark, Russia, Egypt, Syria and Australia.

The movie’s American stars are Billy Zane, who plays a self-professed “peacekeeper sent by God,” and Gary Busey as the Jewish American doctor.

US soldiers have become hate figures in Muslim countries around the world after the unpopular war in Iraq. But here in Turkey, a personal grudge fuels the resentment.

“Valley of the Wolves — Iraq” opens with a true story: On July 4, 2003, in Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq, troops from the US Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade raided and ransacked a Turkish special forces office, threw hoods over the heads of 11 Turkish special forces officers, and held them in custody for more than two days.

The Americans said they had been looking for Iraqi insurgents and unwittingly rounded up the Turks because they were not in uniform. Still, the incident damaged Turkish-US relations and hurt Turkish national pride. Turks traditionally idolize their soldiers; most enthusiastically send their sons off for mandatory military service.

In the movie, one of the Turkish special forces officers commits suicide to save his honor. His farewell letter reaches Polat Alemdar, an elite Turkish intelligence officer who travels to northern Iraq with a small group of men to avenge the humiliation.

There they find a rogue group of US soldiers led by officer Sam William Marshall — played by Zane. In the bloodfest that ensues, the small band of Turks bonds with the people of Iraq and eventually ends American atrocities there, killing Zane and his men in the final scene.

“The scenario is great,” Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas told AP after the film was shown at a posh opening gala on Tuesday night. “It was very successful.”

But Topbas and other Turks at the premiere weren’t too concerned about how the movie would be perceived in the USA. “There isn’t going to be a war over this,” Turkish model Nefise Karatay said after the premiere. “Everyone knows that Americans have a good side. That’s not what this is about.”

'Valley of the Wolves: Iraq not to Affect Turkish-US Relations'

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said the movie named, Valley of the Wolves: Iraq, which was released on Friday, will not affect the relations between Turkey and the US.

Indicating that similar movies are shot in many other countries, Gul told,” The US and Europe produce these kinds of movies themselves. When you take a look at the movies made in the US last year, this movie will not be so significant”.

Meanwhile, the British daily, The Daily Telegraph, claimed the movie agitated anti-Americanism, emphasizing that Valley of the Wolves: Iraq is the most expensive Turkish movie. The newspaper announced that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spouse, Emine Erdogan, also attended the film gala. Although the film-makers explained the scenario is imaginary and does not include any real accusations towards the US, there is not one American character the audience will like, the paper claimed. It indicated the movie affected the audience by quoting the words of an audience from Ankara who said, “Today I hated Americans more than ever”.

American Actors Support 'Valley of the Wolves: Iraq'

Billy Zane and Gary Busey have been denigrated by the American press for acting the “anti-American” Turkish film, Kurtlar Vadisi-Iraq (Valley of the Wolves: Iraq), based on a popular television series.

Two guests on Wednesday criticized the roles of Zane and Busey, during the program hosted by Joe Scarborough on MSNBC television.

Writer Grady Hendrix, contrary to Scarborough and Catholic Union Chief Bill Donahue, said during the program that not upholding the right of freedom of expression would be an anti-American attitude.

Zane said he admired the "sound debates" accompanying the film; however, he, as an actor, played an interesting role that did not send a political message.

Busey’s lawyer also defended his client, "Have we reached a time when we impose freedom of expression by force?."

Did anyone see the Daily Show with John Stewart last night? They showed parts from the movie plus reaction on some US news talk shows (O'Reilly). What I hadn't heard until last night is that Gary Busey plays a Jewish doctor that harvests body parts from the executed Iraqis! :roflmao:

I wonder what affect this movie will have on Turkish tourism and diplomatic relations...

Thanks Digenis,
After your message, I looked at the clip at http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_dai...how/index.jhtml
It is the one headlined as "Use the Force". As always Jon Stewart had intelligent jokes. It was also nice to see that he had shown some "Hollywood" movies with the arabs as the terorists. My only dissappointment was he put Turkey to middle east :(

Indeed, like the American serie where they depicted Turks as terrorists writing in Arab alphabet and having non-Turkish names.

I have respect for the American culture, most Americans are very simple, optimistic and hard working. But their strong side is also their weakness as some of them seem to lack the sophistication and historical awareness that is more common among Europeans and Asians.

Regarding the movie, what many people forget to mention is that this movie is named after one of the most popular series in Turkey, which partly explains its popularity.

I dont care what kind of rubbish they produce, but there is one thing I find disturbing. I understand there are doctors around the world who perform surgical and medical practises on unethical grounds or reasons, but of all those doctors in the world why did they have to portrey him as a Jew, is his Jewness of any relevance to the story or situation? This seems anti-semitic to me.

This film was a great success especially that us Turks managed
to get Billy Zane a well known GREEK actor to participate
in such a anti-USA film.

Shows we can work together if we try.
