Athens 2006: 'Sakis Rouvas to host'

The Greek newspaper Ethnos claims to know that Sakis Rouvas, who represented Greece in 2004 with Shake it, will appear as the male host at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. Host broadcaster ERT has not yet confirmed the news. Earlier, media speculated about Nikos Aliagas as well. Fact or just speculation?

Sakis Rouvas will most likely be accompanied by, traditionally, a female host. Greek media speculate, listing Nia Vardalos, Elissabet Flippouli and Yenovefa Anistonopoulou, better known as former Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, who has Greek roots.

Another potential female host is 2005 Eurovision Song Contest winner Helena Paparizou. Some sources claim to know she is not interested to host the show, but prefers to open the show and to perform the interval act during the final, basically the same role as Ruslana had during this year's contest. Other sources, however, raised objections against these claims.

Taking into account that the contest's Reference Group is currently in Athens to discuss the organisation of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, it's expected more official details about the contest and the hosts become available in the upcoming weeks. Either through the European Broadcasting Union or host broadcaster ERT...

Star Channel rumours
'Anna Vissi proposed to represent Greece'
Yesterday evening, Greek private television station Star Channel quoted Greek music star Anna Vissi, who said that she "never excludes a Eurovision Song Contest participation as long as everything is organised well". Music scene watchers suggest that she basically says: "I am searching for the right song".

Star Channel claims secure ERT sources also aired that broadcaster ERT will officially propose to Anna Vissi the candidature for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest.

However, it is extremely early to announce that she will accept ERT's offer. Anna Vissi is widely named within the Greek media since Cosmote became the official 2006 Eurovision Song Contest sponsor, since the company has also exclusive contract to sponsor the specific artist.

One thing is for sure; it doesn't matter who will represent Greece at the 2006 contest, he or she will have the difficult task to keep the spirit of the contest alive for one more year. The question is what satisfies the audience after a victory...

Anna Vissi participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice; in 1980 with Auto-Stop for Greece and in 1982 for Cyprus with the song Mono i agapi, which came fifth with 85 points.

Cyprus to postpone elections due in May because of Eurovision clash
NICOSIA (Reuters) - It is ridiculed by critics as the epitome of kitsch, but the political clout of the Eurovision Song Contest, hosted by Greece this May, should not be underestimated.

Party leaders on the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus appear to have ruled out parliamentary polls for May 21, because Eurovision will be hogging the limelight, the normally authoritative daily Politis reported yesterday.

Parliamentary elections are held in May every five years and voting is compulsory for Cypriots. But it was likely the contest would trigger a mass exodus of voters to Athens that weekend to watch the event.

“Party leaders believe if elections occur on the May 20-21 weekend voters would prefer Helena. They wouldn’t be wrong,” Politis said, referring to the female Greek singer who won last year’s contest.

The contest — a mixed bag of talent, inane lyrics, bizarre attire and political bias — takes place in Athens on May 20.

Fotis Konstantopoulos reporting from Athens (Greece)
source: Anna Vissi fan club - photo: oikotimes resources

The story began on early December as oikotimes.com first (of course) wrote that ERT was about to propose to Anna Vissi. Back then the real story was, ERT only sounded Anna Vissi via mediators. After Christmas there was a first answer by the mediators to ERT which was negative. Then everyone tried to find out who would be the 2006 Greek representative for Eurovision 2006. Yesterday oikotimes secure sources told us there was a meeting with ERT. Tonight the rumors were confirmed. We spoke with Anna Vissi's official fan club (which -- for the record -- has excellent and close relations with the Greek diva) and confirmed that ERT and Anna Vissi are back again in negotiations. The outcome of negotiations will soon be known.

Anna Vissi is number one in Greece and she is the one of the few Greek artists who can undertake the responsibility to represent Greece in the 51st Eurovision Song Contest which by the way will be held in Athens. The story is in development and we are awaiting more news soon. Anna Vissi (to remind you) represented Greece in 1980 with the song "Autostop" (13th place) and Cyprus (her birth place) in 1982 with the song "Mono i agapi" (5th). With internationally oriented career Anna Vissi is considered also top in many countries. In the US achieved the unbelievable, to enter the Radio Billboard Chart, placed 1st! with the song "Call me" last year. We wish the final answer to be positive. We kindly thank the Anna Vissi fan club.

Greek newspapers are sure!
The Greek newspapers today report (almost all of them, the ones who cover the Eurovision contest) that Anna Vissi has said yes to ERT. The most modest ones say that Anna Vissi is one step closer to say yes for Eurovision. Based also on inside information from the musi indusrty everything seems to lead in the name of Anna Vissi as the representative of Greece for the 2006 entry. Already in the backstage, there are composers preparing songs for Anna. True or false in few days (some say hours but ...) ERT will make the proper and official announcements.

MAD Television website reports
Anna Vissi spoke in a local radio station of Thessaloniki as part of her new restaurant opening yesterday. The Greek diva spoke to the journalist of the radio station about everything but here we will focus on the Eurovision statements. Anna Vissi said "There is no official proposal yet (...) I would be honoured if proposed and if I finally participate I will do it with a total national sentiment for Greece (...) and I wouldn't mind to participate if there was the proper song. I wish there is this song so I can represent Greece now, at a time when we need to present ourselves in the most excellent way, we must be perfect".

more rumours ... as always
The name of a Greek female artist who lives and has a career in a foreign country is widely tipped in the host broadcaster. There was a tip the past few weeks that this female artist is named Kelly Clarkson the winner of the American Idol who has Greek roots. American Idol who has many of the fundamental concepts of the Eurovision Song Contest idea, proved to be the boost show for Kelly's career. The name of Kelly Clarkson is not verified though. Oikotimes sources though found out that the Greek female artist the name of which is discussed by the organizers seems to come from a Nordic country. Soon the thriller will end and if either Anna Vissi or this other artist represent Greece, the honor for each one of them will be equally the same.

Former participants return
Athens 2006, the rendez-vous contest?
The 2006 Eurovision Song Contest might end up in the history books as the rendez-vous year! A number of former Eurovision Song Contest contestants bid again to represent their country (or another!) at the 51st edition of the contest! As many as 20 singers try again for sure, and several countries still have to announce their selection!

Sweden
Carola, who represented Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1983 with Främling, which brought her a third place, and in 1991 with winning song Fångad av en stormvind, takes part in the semifinals of Melodifestivalen again with Evighet. Other participants in the Swedish selection that once took part in the Eurovision Song Contest are Anna Sahlene, who represented Estonia in 2002 with Runaway, Magnus Bäcklund and Jessica Andersson, singing Give me your love as the duo Fame back in 2003 and who now take part solo and Kayo, member of the Swedish 2001 group Afro-dite. Roger Pontare, represented Sweden at the 1994 and 2000 Eurovision Song Contest and Kikki Danielsson did that in 1982 and 1985. Now they both take part in Sweden's national selection for the upcoming contest in Athens.

Germany
In Germany, Vicky Leandros is one of the hopefuls in the national selection. She won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972 for Luxembourg with Après toi and she participated as early as 1967 for Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest as well, singing L'amour est bleu. The fact that her home country Greece organises the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time might have been a reason for her to take part again.

Iceland
Earlier today, we exclusively revealed that Birgitta Haukdal will take part in the third Icelandic semifinal. Earlier she represented the Atlantic island at the 2003 contest in Riga with Open your heart. Gunnar Ólason, one half of the duo TwoTricky, takes part as well. He took the stage for Iceland in 2001 with Angel.

Belgium
Last Sunday, Barbara Dex won the second semifinal of the Belgian selection Eurosong 2006. In 1993, she represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest with Iemand als jij. Unfortunately for the charming singer, the only thing most people remembered was her dress. This year , Dex goes for revenge! Vanessa Chinitor, contestant in 1999 with Like the wind, was less fortunate; during the first semifinal in Belgium she came last, which means she is not in the competition to represent Belgium in Athens anymore.

Estonia
Ines, who came fourth at the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest with Once in a lifetime, bids again to represent Estonia with Iseendale, her song for the Eurolaul 2006 competition. She wrote the song together with her brother Ivo Etti, who was part of the Estonian group Ruffus at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003.

Norway
In Norway it is Geir Rønning taking part again! Last year, the Norwegian singer represented Finland with Why, which didn't qualify for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Apart from singing, he also wrote one of the other participating songs. Although he offered Finnish broadcaster to take part in the Finnish national selection for Athens, YLE rejected the offer. Tor Endresen never even made it to a Eurovision Song Contest final in nearly ten years of trying. When he finally did top the poll to sing for Norway, he ended up last in Dublin in 1997. Little wonder, perhaps, that Norwegian voters were reluctant to award him a second chance for his subsequent attempts in 1999 and 2005! This year, he takes part in the third Norwegian semifinal.

Poland
In Poland, the band Ich Troje is top favourite to win the national selection Piosenka dla Europy. With Zadnych granic - Keine Grenzen, the band came 7th at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest. Now they try again with Follow my heart.

Albania
Although she didn't win, Anjeza Shahini did another bid to represent Albania in Athens. Two years ago, she was the first ever representative of Albania at the Eurovision Song Contest, singing The image of you. Luiz Ejlli took the first prize with Zjarr e ftohte and will be the third Albanian representative at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Denmark
I will never ever let you go was the song Søren Poppe brought to a second place at the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest in Denmark ánd for Denmark, as part of the duo Rollo & King. In this year's Danish national selection, he tries again, together with Lene Matthiesen Nørrelykke, singing En som dig. Trine Jepsen, who represented Denmark in 1999 with Michael Teschl singing This time I mean it, takes part again with Christian Bach, singing Grib mig.

Malta
The Maltese singer Fabrizio Faniello takes part again in the Maltese competition to win the ticket to Athens. In 2001, he represented the small but sunny island in Copenhagen with Another summer night.

Greece?
Anna Vissi participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice; in 1980 with Autostop for Greece and in 1982 for Cyprus with the song Mono i agapi, which came fifth with 85 points. If the Greek diva will represent Greece again is unknown yet, but several sources claim to know she will. In a week or two, Greek broadcaster ERT will announce its participant for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest!

ERT confirms Anna Vissi to represent Greece

News confirmed! Greek diva Anna Vissi will represent Greece at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. Her name is already going around since the day after the 2005 contest, where Helena Paparizou brought Greece its first victory ever.

Last month, Star Channel already revealed that the diva was negotiating with ERT, but it was said no agreement could be reached at that time. "I never exclude a Eurovision Song Contest participation as long as everything is organised well", she said. For the third time in a row, our colleagues of Oikotimes.com reported the name of the Greek representative before the official announcements.

Anna Vissi participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice; in 1980 with Autostop for Greece and in 1982 for Cyprus with the song Mono i agapi, which came fifth with 85 points. At that time, she called herself Anna Vishy.

Anna Vissi has sold 9,5 million albums worldwide. Since 1996 together she has had 18 platinum records. In 2005, she also enjoyed success in the United States, claiming the number 1 position on the Billboard Dance Charts with Call me. According to Room 210 (a Greek Magazine published in 2004) Anna Vissi is considered "a true diva of the Greek musical stage, a role model for all other peformers of similar genres and one who determines all the latest music and fashion trends". More information here at Wikipedia.

It is expected that the song selection will be organised the same way as last year. More news about the Greek representative for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest will most likely be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

As winning country of the 2005 edition, Greece is automatically qualified for next year's final.

How Greeks will choose their 2006 Eurovision Song Contest entry? Well here are the latest (unofficial) news from our inside sources. There will be a national song selection for Anna Vissi scheduled (if everything goes well including the weather) around February 28 to March 3. There will be three to five songs which the jury (40%) and the public (60%) will ultimately judge.

Now there are doubts if Nikos Karvelas (Anna's composer, ex husband and mentor) will be the main composer of the selection. Why we say that? Because there is a song search from various composers as we speak. There seems to be a deadline for those various composers to submit songs to Anna Vissi. The news cannot be confirmed but somehow we have the feeling we are in the right track.

After all the most fair is to give to various composers the opportunity to represent Greece. Nikos Karvelas is the composer behind the Cypriot 1982 entry (although never admitted officially). Nevertheless, Mr. Nikos Karvelas is one of the great composers Greece has and often his songs reached the gold and platinum status something for which he definitely deserves maybe a chance to show his work to Eurovision.

There are big names though asked to compose a song for Anna Vissi. The names which we cannot publish until we receive an official statement or confirmation will surprise many people but also will remind a lot of Eurovision. At least the three names we know here on oikotimes.com they are closely related to the event called Eurovision preselection.

Anna Vissi to ERT today
The weather in Athens is reaching frozen limits which prohibit Greeks to move. So far there is no development for the meeting of Ms. Vissi with ERT Executives. The appointment is scheduled for 15:30 CET but still we cannot confirm or deny there will be a cancellation. Stay tuned on oikotimes.com cause here you are the first to know all the latest from the Greek Eurovision news.

update
Despite the hazards by the snow storm in Athens, the Greek national broadcaster finally confirmed and officialized that Anna Vissi will represent Greece. A press release was send to all Greek media saying that ERT is proud to announce Ms. Vissi as the 2006 representative (...) a choice not only of ERT but also fans asking her to perform for Greece (...) we count on her talent, professionalism and unique stage performance (...) we thank her for accepting the challenge and we invite you all to feel the rythm on May's Eurovision Song Contest in Athens.
