My personal review on 2 games I recently played and which I would recommened:

Shadow of Rome:

Shadow of Rome is an awesome game. It takes you back to the days of the Roman Republic, shortly after Ceasar was murdered. You play 2 characters and the gameplay with them is very different. When you play as Octavianus(who will become the first Roman Emperor Augustus) the game is like metal gear solid. you are roming through Rome and have to sneak into buildings to collect evindence of who murdered Ceasar. You cant attack the guards head on so you have to sneak and use your brains to get pass them. The other character is Agrippa who is a Roman Centurion. His father is falsely accused of murdering Ceasar and is about to be executed. His mother is killed by an Roman general and in order to save his father and avenge his mother he becomes a galdiator (yes it is a bit of ripoff from Gladiotor the movie). The gladiotorial fightings are awesome. You not only have the survive the fights, but also have to entertain the public. You can do so by cutting of heads or arms and showing at or trowing to the public. You have a wide arange of weapons. And if you entrain the public enough they will throw a special weapon for you. The fightings are very different. You have battle royals, team matches, match of who kills the most, animal matches (against tigers), boss fights (including one against an elphant) and you have even chariot racing (like in Ben Hur).
For anyone who liked Gladiator will like Shadow of Rome and my impression is that this is a very good game.
I will give it an 8,5.

Mercenaries:

Think of Grand Theft Auto and add war scenario with tanks, apc's, jeeps, fighterjets, helicopters, and a lott of explosion and you have Mercenaries. Although you cant do as much as in GTA, still this makes up for the abundance of warfare action. You can choose from 3 mercenaries in the beginning. After you chose one you will enter North Korea, where 5 parties are fighting. The North Koreans are the largest enemy and you can never do missions for them. The 4 other parties are the Allied Nations (sort of UN blue helmet troops althoug their equipment is purly American), the South Koreans, the Chinese and the Russian Maffia. Your primary mission is to collect the heads of the North Korean government. But to find them you need to collect information on their whereabouts. And to collect info you need to do the missions. The fightings are awesome and sometimes a bit hard. Especially when Tanksand Gunship Helicopters are involved which are hard to take out. You can Besides 2 type of grendes you can carry to types of weapons, which include Carabines, light machine guns, SMG, anti-tank, anti-air, RPG, sniperifles etc etc. You can also take the vehicle like Humvee, APC, tank, transport heli, gunship heli, light weight tanks, trucks etc etc. Only thing I missed where fighterjets, which regularly fly over your head. However you can request airsupport like precision attacks, bombardment , bunker buster strikes, anti-tank strikes. Ofcourse this will cost you a lott of money. Overall Mercenaries is a good war game. For those fond of 3d wargames or those who liked GTA I would recommened this game.
I will give it an 7,5.

PS my rating system:
9-10 :applause:
7-8,5
5-6,5 :P
3-4,5 <_<
1-2,5 :damn:

all the Age of Empires...it was my favorite.. :applause:

I played alot cossacks too... :P

Dragases - February 19, 2005 02:11 PM (GMT)
I've always been partial to historical Strategy games, also. The Total War series (Shogun, Medieval, Rome) are some of the best I've played. :applause:

RPGs are OK, but I find them a little too linear for my liking. If I were to choose one, I'd say Neverwinter Nights - great graphics, good characters and story.

I don't mind first-person shooters, as long as they include some tactics/strategy. Operation: Flashpoint :applause: ranks as one of my favourites, and I didn't mind America's Army :applause: and Medal of Honor  , either.

They're still making addons for Operation: Flashpoint - the game was released over three years ago!

Just finished 'Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II (KOTOR II)'

Its an awesome game, surely anyone who likes either Star Wars or actions rpgs would like it. I would recommend anyone wanting to play this game, to first play 'Star Wars KOTOR I' since the stories are interconnected.
It took me 40 hours to complete the game and was truly amazing, like being in one of the Star Wars films.

You play an exiled Jedi and throughout the game you gather companions. You can choose wehter you will fight for the light or dark side by your actions. For example you can decide to do the dirty jobs for some Smuggler at the expense of the local authorities or try to help some civilans from a tyrant.

Although the game was very good, there werent so many changes to the first game. So comparing it the game doent exceed its predecessor. Nevertheless its a great experience I would recommend any gamer.
I will give it an 8

RTS games were always the bomb. But I think the new ones truly SUCK. Especially Command and Conquer: Allies & Axis. Its too confusing.

but games like Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge and even Tiberian Sun were good. You wanted a tank? You got a tank! can it get any easier than that?

Right now Im playing Call of Duty: United Offensive. Its the expansion pack for Call of Duty. Its like no other game. Not only is it realistic, it has jeeps, tanks, flak 88s, and the ability to call in artillery strikes in the multiplayer version. The missions werent as hard as they were in the first one but they were fun

Cid,

I'm sure you would love the Jedi Academy. It's an amazing FPS.

Also, SW: Republic Commando is recently released.

Cid - February 28, 2005 10:00 AM (GMT)
Yes they are both great gaems. I will surely get Republic Commando, that game got delayed so much. But it is really time comsuming hehe, KOTOR II took me 40 hours :sleepy:

Anyway still the best star wars experience from a game is the one you get from KOTOR II. If you are star wars fan I recommend it, however play the first part if you havent played it at all.

May the force be with you, Captain Picard

Anyone here play Spartan?
user posted image

It’s not the best, the interface could have been better and the graphics are nothing to write home about. It’s a turn based game and can take weeks to finish the larger campaigns.

Check the area map below:

I played it...bought it even...
But i think its worthless...for some one who has played total war or other good level strategy(with best graphic) games...this game sucks...except the name...

Regards

Alepou 340MB - March 1, 2005 01:06 PM (GMT)
Fortunately I didn’t buy it, a friend lent me his copy and I have played it a lot.
I haven’t played total war yet, but I know it is far superior to it graphically and most every other way.
(I was wondering why he hasn’t asked for it back!) :P

Cheers,

I have been playing Operation Flashpoint for a long time, upgraded to the latest version (incl. Resistance). I only play with its editor and create different scenarios ranging from guerilla ambushes, tank&armored battles, spec op assaults and so on. The editor is so complex that it can be a good basis to learn real War Gaming & Simulation softwares like MAK (especially user interface and scripts).

It is the only game I have been playing besides The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind & Bloodmoon for approx. 2.5 years. I thnk that explains how I like it! :)

Beware of a bad Joke

I have found a very good game. It requires strategical and organized thinking as well as fastness. It's somewhere in between turn based strategy and real strategy type of games, and it has three levels of expertise. The higher you go the more it lasts, and the more it gets harder. You do not have to buy it if you have Windows XP, and even earlier versions. Now, go to programs menu, and select the games, this game should be sorted there, and the name is minesweeper. It has very good graphic qualities. :woohoo:

Modus (the Admin) wrote: stop such childish humor here

So you did not like it.

Modus (the Admin) wrote: No I did not, and I will ban you.

No, please don't I will, add a "Beware of a bad joke" in fron of my post

Modus (the Admin) wrote: OK, but this is my last warning...

Oki.

LOL @ modus! :P

My fav games so far are:

Falcon 4 (THE best fighter aircraft simulator with a huge support from the community. Out since 1997 and they are still making patches and planning new ones)

Rome Total War (From the hardcore gamer perspective, it has some serious bugs with AI behaviour, strategic and tactical) but still one of the best strategy games out there.

As an old timer at gaming (got my first 286 12Mhz PC in 1986)
i have witnessed PC game evolution, and sampled all it's stages!

In terms of addiction, i'd have to say from old RPG games,
the sierra classic Quest for glory 1 takes the prize.

Civilisation II was also very good.

One game i can still play again and again even now (ok, its not really that old)
cause it is simply stupendous, is Master of orion II battle at antares.
Truly awesome game.

Also liked Starcraft. Online gaming with that on battlenet yielded some epic battles, same with red alert :)

For newer games, RPG's got a new standard to be judged by : i just LOVED morrowind elder scrolls. Simply awesome also.

In retrospect, i have played countless games. Many were just so damn impressive , but you forget them like a couple of years later cause they had no time endurance.

Play once and never again.

There are few games that stick, which make you want to play again and again.

Funnily enough, the game that has stuck with me the most over the years and i never ever get tired of playing it is
Master of Orion II.

just cant get enough of it :)

Cid - March 23, 2005 02:20 PM (GMT)
Gentlemen,

There is a new FPS out for the PC, PS2 and XBOX. I am talking about "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30".

BiA is one the best warfare experiences in recent time and among the FPS it is one the best. It takes place durin WWII during D-day and the following week. You are playing Sergeant Baker of the 501 Parachute Infantry Division of the 101st Airborne. This game is unique because of the realistic combats taking place in urban , forest and swamp areas. One thing thats very different is the fact its so damn difficult to shoot. There is no crossing, only when you press the aim button. When you are running you can hardy aim, you really have to stand still. Even then it's difficult hit acuratly, you really have to crouch to hit. good. Also your enemy is very intelligent. If certain position/fortifications cant be holded any more, they fall back and regroup. So Rambo actions like in so many FPS games are here out of the question. You really have to use your squad. And thats something else very nice about this game. Throughout the game you get the command over riflesquads, machinegunners and mechanized armor like light tanks and sherman tanks. You can give them a set of command like where they should position themselves, to provide covering/suppressing fire, to take cover or to attack on a position. Its here that makes BiA feel more like a tactical FPS. Often you cant take on the enemy head on, because of heavy German fortifications and cross fire. So you have to flank your enemy, ordering one squad/tank to take suppressing fire on a German position, while the other Squad/Tank is flanking it. Or when entering an Urban area, you can order a tank to go first while your squad and you hide behind the tank.

Currently I had a mission to clear a Fench city, shortly after that the Germans were coming back, resulting in heavy urban fightings (like in saving private ryan).
It was really intens, we were being shot from all sides. In the end ofcourse I was victorious B)

Anyway Brother in Arms is a n excellent game which I would like to recommend to anyone who like FPS and even tactical games. This is one of the most realistic warfare games, beating games like the MoH series.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 -> :applause:

I recently played STAR WARS : REPUBLIC COMMANDO.It is a quite nice first person shooter, although it tends to be repeative after a while. The good thing is that wou are the commander of some badass soldiers who follow your comands. There are some really tough batlles, usually at the end of every mission. The game though is relatively short,so its gonna take you a weekend to finish it if you are experienced in such type of games.

Rawshark - March 29, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
My current top bollocks game has to be GTA San Andreas, any game in which you can beat to death an Elvis Presley impersonator with a 12" rubber dildo has to be bad... The only downside is that if you hate rap (like me) it'll drive you mad after a while.

My favourite game EVER is the mighty GTA Vice City, the main character Tommy is voiced by Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and the music and atmosphere takes us oldies back to the 80s and memories of Miami Vice, Scarface, new wave, coke, greed and better times.

Cheers

Among the newer games, Half life 2 is my favorite fps, along with Chronicles of Riddick:Escape from the Butcher Bay. Great graphics in both games, and great atmosphere. The integration of the Physics Engine into the puzzles of the game in Half Life 2 is almost revolutionary. And the Best water effects I have ever seen to date in a game.

Nexus is my favorite strategy Game nowadays, and as far as Strategy games go, it's one of a kind. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

For the ones of You who want to have a good laugh I would recommend the Freedom Force series. Especially the second installement: Freedom Force vs. Third Reich is a hilarious RTS.

And the Remake of Sid Meier's Pirates for PC is also pretty good. I get sentimental each time I play it, and remember the good old days, where I played its original version on Commodore 64.

Morrowind is my favorite RPG to date, and I think the next installement in the Elder Scrolls series is going to be great. Vampire Bloodlines:masquarade is also a decent RPG with an unusual setting. Playing a vampire is pretty cool. KOTOR 1 was also Great, The best Star Wars themed game ever. Didn't play Kotor2 yet.

Ah,i was playing in on Amstrad CPC 6128 :D My fav game ever.I also have the PC version of it (not the remake, the original one),but has a bug, practically it is terribly difficult to obtain a decent rank and i think if you carry over 300.000 gold it goes nuts and the crew is mutinous.

The remake of the pirates is pretty good. Has very nice graphics, and retains very much the atmosphere of the original game. There are a few modifications of course, for example the towns cannot be attacked from the sea anymore, only from land. The music is also very nice and fits to the game's atmosphere( Yoo Hoo and a Bottle of Rum!)

I did not play any of the wizardry series.
I realized I have forgotten to mention one of my favorite RPGs: The Fallout. Fallout2 was also nice.

Anybody fan of The Elder Scrolls? Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and coming next: Oblivion..

God I missed Daggerfall and its endless towns and millions of people.. Morrowind and its add-ons were also great but couldn't give the same feeling of atmosphere as Daggerfall. But it was still great, made you forget the real world (and it caused my ex girl friend to break up with me :))

The Oblivion looks fantastic! I just can't wait: http://www.elderscrolls.com/home/home.htm

I started sparing money for a new PC :)

By the way, here in company we got some demos and trailers of the new games coming for PS3 and I gotta tell: They're unbelievable.. I hope I win a lottery or somethin' Because I'm planning to play them 7/24 :)

Cid - June 15, 2005 12:28 PM (GMT)
Huh you have PS3 playable demo's? Please tell me which games? How do games feel?

PS thanks for the tip about Elder Scrolls, I am an rpg fan too ;)

@Clearday sorry to hear you are busy, but if you are that good the more reasons you should join us, we would be an excellent team together.

I remember scenes from "Kill Zone 2" and it was simply superb! It was a trailer and it was like watching a science fiction movie. There are speculations that it was a remastered trailer, not actual in game scenes. Because it is far beyond that any PC game can give.. And there was Gran Tourismo (3 ? I can't remember the number). I, as an engineer was shocked when I saw the mud effects (from a developer's point of view, performance etc)

There was also a F1 game, but I can't recall the name. There was a scene from pit-stop points. There were -no exaggeration- dozens of crew members each acting seperately and independently. Now that's what I call a good game engine :)

Clearday-TRForce

I'm seriously considering a notebook in the short term, as my PC crashed last day. I'll take your advice into consideration but not sure yet. Thanks anyway ;)

I have tried to buy PS3 in Taiwan market...But Taiwanes dont allow PS3 outside the country for at least "6 months"...

Cid - June 15, 2005 01:52 PM (GMT)
I think you mean Gran Turismo 5, because the latest GT on PS2 is Gran Turismo 4, which is a very beauthiful game.

Gran Turismo on PS3 -> My eyes will explode because of the the games details and beauty

After watching the trailers, the engineers here decided to resign and apply to game companies :)

Just wait and see :)

1st: Heroes III :applause: (its like chess. No micromanagement. Game is based on thinking. You have all the time you need (even in battles). Just think of the opposite movement and act accordingly) (btw Heroes 4 sucks)

2nd: I dont care about the graphics at all. I do care about the game play. Its the same with my second favorite game: Red Alert 2 :applause: . The better the graphics the worst the game play and the fun/variety on strategies. Just give me IRAQ and ill make an oasis of death right into your base :naughty:

3rd: Civilization III  (Disadvantage on the options you have during negotiations)

StrategyMaster - July 1, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
Heroes III and Civ 3 i like these to and Total War series.(And much more strategy games)
