Title: Questions about LOK/OYK
PINDOS - October 24, 2005 11:46 AM (GMT)
I have a couple of questions about LOK/OYK:
-Does anybody know if the Greek special forces have some kind of "survival"-training??
I know the SAS/SBS have to learn the SAS-guide and learn which kind of berries, cactusses, animals are eateble and how to catch these animals.
The Dutch commandos learn similar things, even practice in slaughtering rabbits/hares...
-Another answer I would really like to have, is what skills the Greeks special forces need to have, in order to succesfully complete their training. Perhaps Lord can give me some info (eg. what do the examinators demand of the recruits's physical abilities, shooting abilities).
In the fitness-standards topic, you gave info about the demands in order to be allowed to start training in the recruitment-centres. But what do the instructors demand from the LOK/OYK recruits to be able to do (perhaps you could give me some info) in order to succesfully complete their training and become LOK/OYK...
-And finally do LOK/OYK train in martial arts, and if so what?
Kickboxing? Jiujitsu? TKD? Krav Manga??

Yes they have...I would say a lighter one for conscripts ..and a very heavy for carrier soldiers and officers..

The Greek commandos maybe dont slaughter any animal...officially...but they shurely try some ...skoulikia/worms... ;)
Also the survival training of our SF is very simiular to this of the SAS...reason?Alot of our officers participate in this trainings...some of them even in the amazon jungle with the foreighn legion...and other NATO members...like the LRRTP in Germany and so on....
as a conscript iam not shure that you will see alot of this training...except the so called PEN..prohorimeni ekpaidevsi neosilekton...
Were every conscript become a true rider and take hes eidikotita/specialized
some of the so called scholeia.../shools for monimous are the sholeio aichmaloton/epivioshs...in Rentina...and a so called 2-3 months training shool about different methods of raiding /surviving also in Rentina...
another new... is that Pevko isnt any more the training center of our SF but Rentina...in North Greece...(something that i supported for along time now..because of the harsh clima and the contissions there...and the training facilitys which this base has...shooting simulators etc etc)

For shure the first thing you have to have is physical health...mental health and an good psyche...
even if you arent at your bests...they will train you ;)
shooting abillitys arent required for newbies...you learn there...

LOK...(officialy LOK dont exist anymore...) lets say green berets ok?
they have a different training programm than OYK ...
above i give you some info about conscripts and carrier soldiers...
so you could understand that conscripts havent the same "specialized" training as the monimi/carrier...its a time thing you know...
OYK/ETA/Zmak...is another world believe me...
also after 2000 no conscript can go anymore to the OYK...(only carrier soldiers and officers)

Yes they do...
officially an training shool of martial arts exists...in 2 MAL...Its TKD...and jiu jitsu technics...35 days for conscripts...if you are selected...
in OYK...you learn from various instructors the neccecary technics...of killing
i will bring some of the infos in greek articels this days...
from tomorrow i will have some time free...(its in greek...and maybe some better english writer can translate ...)
All in all...the greek SF are really one of the best SF of NATO members...they proved it alot of times in different shools and manouvers/excercises...
some of the sambles of what expects an newbie "visiting " the Green berets is/
- alot of Kms....of running...walking...full eqipped///
-alot of stivos machis...
-alot of push ups...
-alot of sleepless nights...
-alot of shooting...
-and of corse never be bored....and beeing among the bests...

How does the training in 71st Airmobile compares to that of the green berets as far as conscripts are concerned?

First off all sorry for the delay of my answer!
Since i served in 71st Air-Mobile Brigade i can tell you something about the training there. I can not tell you many things about the training in the LOK Commandos althought i passed a "school" of 3 weaks in Redina about the unorthodox warfare.
When the conscripts enter the unit thet have to pass a 1 month Training test called PEN. (Prokehorimeni ekpedefsi Neosilekton) I believe there is similar training in LOK and other elite units. When a new soldier pass the training succesfully he receive the Red Beret. There is a lot of physical training, ofcourse there is every day gymnastics and the soldiers runing for 2-3 miles every day. During the gymnastics(and for every reason for punishment) there is also many "push-ups" etc. Then after the anaphora the soldiers move to a hill about 2 miles from the camp and ofcourse we moving Runing with the helmets, guns etc. Then there is a theoritical education about varius things. During this month there are several small marchings about 10-15 klm and training with Chinook and Huye Helicopters. In the camp we have mocks of Huye chinook, C-130, and even NH-90 where after the PEN the soldiers training almost everyday in Disbarking and barking prosedures. After the PEN a soldier serving 12 monthts will have to do the Great marshing of 30 klm in the mountains. If he is "Lucky" he may do this 2 times. There are often marshings of smaller base of about 15-20klm
We have Firing of all types of weapons we have like the M-16A2, M4A1, HK-11, FN-MAG, M203, M2H2 Browining, grenades etc. The firing of the main gun (M16A2&M4A1) is once a weak
Also everysoldier study his speciality, thats why after the PEN we have several courses about the machineguners, the Anti-Armor Soldiers, The Mortars, the VBL drivers etc..
I can say that the training is similar of the one in the LOK, and other elite forces. Maybe the marshings are smaller, i heared that the LOK have marshings of 80klm.

I can say @Lord described it perfectly!
The same goes for the 71st Air-mobile (we used to call it Airborne  )
And i also support the @Lords view about the new training center of the SF. Redina is the ideal place!!
Everyone who has visited knows why!
