Today I saw the movie The Merchant of Venice with one of my favorite actors Al Pacino playing in it. The movie is based on William Shakespeare's play by the same name.
The story takes place in the Venetian Republic around the 16th century. Its about a Venetian merchant who lends money from a Jewish moneylender on behalf of his best friend/lover.
Some people have branded this play as anti-semitic, but I think its understandable considering the time in which it was written. In fact Shakespeare does show the missery the Jews had to live by in Europe, even in the free and open society of Venice. The dialogue in the movie is in Shakespearean play style although not as difficult to follow as Hamlet or Macbeth.
Overall they made a good movie of Shakespeare's tradegy/comedy and thus it is highly recommendable to watch.
