The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gürer Aykal is performing “Oresteia,” a work by Xenakis, the most important Greek composer of the 20th century, backed by Greek choirs in the Benaki Museum in Athens.

The project is somewhat of a Turkish-Greek friendship concert. Oresteia is performed by 13 members of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, two Greek choirs and Greek dancers. The first concert was performed on Friday, Sunday and another concert will take place today,Monday at 9:00 p.m. for both. Close friend of Xenakis and well-known baritone Spyros Sakkas is the artistic director.

The Oresteia project, which is largely financed by the Greek Ministry of Culture, is an important step towards enhancing cultural relations between the European Union and Turkey, especially since it is performed in Athens before the Oct. 3 start date of Turkey's accession talks. Xenakis' work sends messages of cooperation and democracy among people and societies.

Sakkas and the Borusan Culture and Art Center plan to repeat the same project with the same artists in the next few years. The work of art is planned to be performed at the Ephesus Antique Theater in Turkey within the framework of the 2006 Petra European Cultural Capital shows and also at the 2008 Peking Olympic Games.
