the movei will be based on the work of Frank Miller, the guy of the Sin City comic book/movie. Perhaps it will have the same style. BTW Sin City was a nice movie to watch. I liked the detective style narration. B)

their valor inspired all of Greece to rise up against the invading Persians, planting the seeds of democracy.

We allready HAD democracy! Stupid americans! :damn:

U-BOOT - September 11, 2005 07:25 PM (GMT)
I shiver thinking of what they ll do to it.They could say that Spartans gave time for the Greeks to gather and defend democracy ,but Spartans planted the seeds of democracy?? :hammer: Bt if they were the most stubborn supporters of oligarchy! They were allergic to democracy.

I remember what they did to Alexander and can't beleive how's possible to have such a rich script with tremendous opportunities to make it an epic, and screw it up so badly.I was about to sleep at the end...

cameleon1975 - September 11, 2005 07:34 PM (GMT)
Having read Frank Millers ''300'',I would say that us.imdb.com description is not accurate. In Frank Millers novel,Spartans are described as badass soldiers who obey blindly the LAWS of Sparta, not Democracy.

I've read the comic...

Amazing artistic job from the side of Miller, but he pictures spartans being in semi-neandertal condition...

He has them as being some zulu tribe in Africa. War mongers, rude, etc.. :damn: :damn: :damn: :Cursing:

I bet it will be a thrilling movie to watch, but let's pray they will give a realistic aproach to the movie, cause only prayors can work with all these duma$$es in holywood... :hammer:

The irony is that there are sources that deny both these characterizations.

Thucydides says that it is easier to convince 30000 (democratic) Athenians to go to war, than to convince 1 (oligarchic) Spartan to do the same.

Plus, Spartans had a great sense of humour. They were austere etc etc but their humour was infamous. My favourite anecdote is described in one of Plutarch's books. A Spartan and another Greek (can't remember from where) are looking at a painting of a battle between Athenians and another Greek city (can't remember which). The other Greek comments: "The Athenians are very brave...". The Spartan answers: "On the painting...". :D

Pytheas - December 22, 2005 07:02 AM (GMT)
Anciant Spartans are the most civilised society planet earth has ever seen.

They were mighty warriors but this is what their time was asking of them.

End of story. No point of arguing imo...

My ancestors (Messenians) WERE the helots.

But I can not deny that Spartans had concieved the perfection that we still ask for civilisation to bring in our lives.

Spartans were living like the poorest of people. They did not had any money or posessions, they ate no meat or luxurious stuff, but "Melana Zomo" (a black tasteless soup made of weat)... Their buildings and houses were the humblest of all Greece.
They were the only political system worldwide through the books of History, that had banned the metal called GOLD to be under the ownage or the usage of its substitutes. Even the official city of Sparta did not own not even one golden coin.

And they had this life not cause they couldn't have something better (all of Greece, including Athens, was beneath them, and they could have whatever they wished, anytime they wished it. They had crashed the Pershian empire for god's shake.), nor because they dispised civilisation...
BUT BECAUSE they believed that greatness is not counted by riches or golden coins, or shiny big beautiful decorated buildings, or by big fat flannely beautiful words, but by the greatness of the man, by the glory of his deeds, by the shining of his spirit, by his obeyance to the Supreme laws of his state, by the beauty of HIS OWN body.

They were saying that there was no need of an odeum for a singer to express heavenly music with his harp, nor of great temples for a man to connect himself with the ancestral gods, etc, etc..

But this does not mean that I won't name my children, like many Messenians here, after the names of those Messenian heroes that burnt down Sparta... Names like Aristodemos or Aristomenis still are very popular between the messenians. And I would be proudly be one of their rebeled helots. ;)

That was Greece back then. Scattered city-states fighting each other. But each one of them had such glory that by the today mean's, it can't be measured.

Sparta, Athens, Corinthos, Theba, Pella, Syracuse, Miletos, Olympia, Byzantion, Rhodes, Knossos, etc, hated each other like nothing, but they had one thing in common they were (and still are) Hellenes. Glorious and proud.

I respect Sparta as an enemy, unlike some other barbarian, envious and miserable ones. user posted image

How did you find out that your ancestors are Messenians ?

Nice post Pytheas.

How did you find out that your ancestors are Messenians ?

well, you can not discover the obvious... :dunno:

I am Mesenian.. My father comes from a village called Androusa that lies next to (ancient) Ithomi, the capital of Messinia, and My Mother comes from a village called Filiatra, that is next to ancient Pylos (that had for king the respectful and wise homeric King Nestor). Both of the villages are in Messinia.

I lived all my life in the modern capital of Messinia, Kalamata.

:P

To be precise, not all of Messinia was helotes, but only a (small) part of it... but we dramatise things to excuse the destruction of Sparta..

For anyone that can read greek, there is a perfect link: http://www.sikyon.com/Sparta/history_gr.html on the history of Sparta, including the Messenian wars, and most itrestingly the (unknown) invasion of Lacedaimonians to Minor Asia. The reasons of the failure of that campaign were the ones that led Alexander few years later to "exandrapodisei" the Thebes... ;)

There are times in history when man rise to greatness. The 300 Spartans did that.

I am waiting for that movie like an expectant father. If it's as good as Gladiator better, I will bring a sleeping bag to the movie house and watch the movie until I go blind.

Cid - January 15, 2006 11:54 PM (GMT)

second video journal

Spartan - January 21, 2006 10:49 AM (GMT)
I just saw the video.........oh my God, what a tragedy!

Spartans going to battle with bare chests? BARE CHESTS? What is this? Neanderthals with spears? F*CK*N SAD.

After I saw the video, I held my face for a few minutes and almost cried. They are making a FARCE out of the bravest man who ever breathed. Spartans success was born from their discipline, bravery and BATTLE GEAR. They were literally armored tanks. From a frontal view, there was NOTHING exposed but their eyes. From the back, there was only the bottom of their feet (thus the achilles heal legend) and that's it. Their amour was light years ahead of ANYBODY in their time. And in the movie they are going to war with bare chests! BARE CHESTS!?!?! What the hell are the Persians fighting with? Plastic dildos? "Here, hit my rippling muscles with your dildo!”

I don’t mind artistic license, in fact, I love it when properly used. When Gladiator is in the fields of Elysium, he sees his family in fields of wheat. Life, death, food, love. Here we have a bunch of cartoon man gong to battle. Where is any sense of reality? Where is there even a ounce of depicting how they fought. This producer knows as much about the Spartans as any typical Hollywood producer. NOTHING.

From the first scenes I saw on this F*CK*N MOVIE, they are turned into bare chest apes with spears. I can't believe this! This is so F*CK*N SAD! This F*CK*N producer must killed as soon as possible, his body BURNED fueled by every millimeter of every tape he made. F*CK*N Hollywood, what did I expect? Reality? Even a semblance of reality? Why? How could it sell popcorn? I mean telling a REAL story of bravery for anyone who is not carrying an American flag is too much for F*CK*N Hollywood. All F*CK*N Hollywood can do is create mythology and fiction about "brave" Americans but if it comes to other cultures, they turn in into comedies and cartoons.

The day that California sinks into the Pacific is a GOOD DAY.

PEGASUS - January 21, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)

Gamo to kerato mou ...gamo

Spartan - January 24, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
Now the Spartans smell? SMELL? A sto dialo......

They smell, the are gay, they are barbarians, they have big dicks........

For two hundred years, their enemies would shake uncontrollably and piss on themselves at the very thought of going to battle against Spartans. The entire ancient world knew of Spartan bravery, ferocity and disciplin, so much so that no one wanted to go to battle against them. They fought at Thermopile without a second thought of death. Honour was not a word, it was a welcomed death. And now they "smell".

I tell you what smells, CokaCola superman and their Hollywood. Did you know that Americans are the greatest heroes of all time? John Wayne killed a million Indians with his bare hands. Rambo could wipe out an entire regiment with his biceps. Clint Eastwood could kill a man with his eyes. Americans are the bravest, smartest, honourable man that EVER walked on the face of this earth.....ON FILM. Much like an ugly woman looking in the mirror and telling herself how beautiful she is, CokaCola superman look at their Hollywood movies and tell themselves how brave they are. It's no suprise that when it comes to other cultures, Hollywood distorts it to fit their silicone tits, rippling stomach muscles and popcorn bravery are the mark of Hollywood.

Cid - January 24, 2006 12:21 PM (GMT)
BRAVO Spartan :applause:
