I think that there was a request for a couple of mini submarines for special operations?Any idea if this program will be included in the next EMPAE?

Does anyone know which types could be considered candidates?

Even many times in the idea of such a purchase crosses my mind like a sweet spring breeze... :)

Please anyone with more details, put them on the table; damn it. :D

Back to 1994 Greek defence company EPTAE had developed an technologicaly advanced craft with "stealthy" capabilities called ASV(or SAV according other sources)-Attack Stealthy Vessel. The whole vessel was at the same line designed of "Storm Shadow" ship(a catamaran style vessel).I was wondering if that project could be rebirthed for the needs of DYK.

I don't think that Greece could develope such ambitious programs without experienced help from foreign shipyards.

KonTim is right about the development of a catamaran with stealth capabilities...
I had an article which maybe some older members can remember...
Unfortunately the whole development had not the political support...and the firm didn’t go further...

Also after the visit of the Greek MoD in the DYK basis...promises were given that the DYK will soon enter to a new age...(which means we will have soon the list of the boats...) together with some other stuff...

Now about the sub...
I thing the most of you know that we have the 2 man sub...for special operations...
I know that there is an interest about a mini sub...unfortunately can’t give you any other info...

Unfortunately, the Greek Armed Forces don't support much indigenous weapon systems.I remember that EAB had developed a high speed boat for the special forces which could be equipped with rocket launchers and mashine guns and would be ideal for the defense of our Islands. It was a low risk program but still it was dropped.

This is simply lack of political will.We have shipyards that are capable of building under licence from submarines to frigates not to mention the commercial designs of huge oilers.Designing a small special operations craft would be no problem.Samos class landing ships is indigenous design and has been proven very good too,no complaints ever heard about it.Same for Mahitis and Pirpolitis.

Being a huge sea trader nation, it amazes me that Greek navy has to rely mostly on foreign support for their navy.. Why there has been no interest in developing in certain areas for your navy? Maybe the costs of other arms purchases make the finance an issue?

thanks.

In Greece we say : Money has no motherland nor religion.

Greeks may be mayor players in the shipping buisness, but they don't care about greek shipyards. All ships are bought from foreign shipyards (Ukraine,South Korea) because they are cheaper.

Theoretically, the greek shipyards could offer and build any type of vessels since they cooperate with international giants.

As for developing some types of vessel for the Hellenic Navy it is always a question of money. The budget is limited and the navy is trying to cover its needs with a combination of limited new vessels and older units which can be aquired at interesting prices from the international market.I don't think that this policy is going to change anytime soon.....

Unfortunately Cam is right...

Indeed money has no homeland...

and instead of the merchants supporting there own shipyard...the NAVY saved it actually whith the big programms...

The same goes for developments...
Its allways a politicl decission...which of corse hides big risks...
the only thing that is important for me is...that people/firms who actually started such programms whith there own costs...have gained the know how...

Cam you are right about the craft you are mentioned.Allow me a correction however. The craft was designed by EBO not by EAB.The design had the code called UFASC II and it was proposed for the needs of Greek Amphibious Raiders. It was a catamaran-style vessel capable of great speeds and heavily armed for its size. The other craft(the one i mentioned) has been designed by EPTAE company. Those two vessels were belonging to differents categories, with ASV been proposed for addoption from Navy Special Operations Forces(MYK).

Its been a long time since the last time I have heard about it,so you can be right on that.Anyway, the sad thing is that today they are only memories...
