I honestly can't imagine anyone being desperate enough to pay money for gold.
Online gaming and real-life are supposed to be parallel, they should never be firectly related to one another.
On a similar note, I recently heard of a man who payed 50 000 dollars for his own private island within the Starwars: Galaxies world. Apparently, he can do whatever he wants on this virtual island, and frequently invites users to come and party with his character.

That is...scary! I was thinking of getting the Star Wars one soon. Might try City of Heroes first.
