Description: Her full story

Kiowa - August 27, 2006 08:55 AM (GMT)
I am writting a book about Kiowa's life. So far I only have the first chapter and about half of the second chapter done, but I drew up a chapter plot and it is looking like it will be around 36 chapters SO FAR. Note: There is about another 5-10 chapters to be added from another RPG after she is done at sotw....if that ever comes...

The Life of Kiowa

Introduction
The story of Kiowa’s life is one that started with a few stray ideas and a little wolf RPG I did just for fun. I let her story unfold as I went, never really knowing where I was going with things until they happened. More than once I found myself a little shocked at what she had just done or what had just happened to her. But even though it was my hands writing the words, I felt as if she was writing her own story and was just using me as a kind of middle man. Not that I really minded. From birth to death, Kiowa’s story is full of joy and despair. I welcome you to the story of how one wolf surpassed all the odds, the story of one wolf who overcame everything in her way, the story of a wolf named Kiowa who had her very soul ripped out and tortured…but who kept going in the hope that there was something better.

Chapter 1, The Bringing of New Life
The season was winter and it was one of the worst winters the Moniku wolf pack had ever seen. Prey was extremely scarce and most of the pack had already died of starvation come mid winter. But the four wolves who were left were strong and, for the most part, healthy. They had been able to survive off scrawny rabbits and some birds, but with each passing day it seemed that hope for the wolf pack’s survival grew thinner and thinner. As if to make matters worse, the Alphess, Silver, was pregnant. Her and the Alpha, Kapu, greatly regretted their decision to mate when Silver’s season had come around late. But there was no denying the fact that her belly was rounding more and more each day…and it was certainly not from eating too much. But as if fate wanted to be even more cruel and twisted, the cubs were born smack dab in the middle of winter during a fierce blizzard. Zira, the faithful Betan and Maiden to the Moniku pack stayed by Silver the whole way through, making the labor flow easily through her wisdom. But as was custom, Kapu and the bitter Omega, Galamite, stayed outside the den, pacing restlessly for awhile before they laid down and curled into a tight ball near the entrance, needing to keep their bodies warm.
Kapu was a proud, large black wolf. He had inherited the throne to the Moniku pack by right of birth. Silver, named for her stunning silver pelt that always seemed to sparkle when she moved, was the daughter of another set of Alphas in the eastern pack. Her sister had come with her, but she had died with most of the other wolves. Silver was a wise, charming wolf, never really having much to say unless it was really important where as Kapu was extremely outspoken and had a quick temper. But with Silver at his side, the Moniku Alphas made a fair team, always listening and seemingly with endless patience. Zira was Kapu’s little sister. She was a short, creamy colored wolf with who always was willing to offer you a smile. So it was only natural that she had a mate before she was even a year old…and cubs by the time she was a year old. Zira was a natural mother, full of sweet patience, but could be firm at times when she needed to be. She loved cubs and she had never once had a still born which was, considering how the wilderness works, a miracle. It total, Zira had had four litters of cubs before Kapu had even decided to have one. Most of her children left to join other packs when they came of age, but a few of them staid behind. All who had were dead…all except for Galamite. He was from Zira’s very first litter and he was, by all means, a rotten egg…a splotch in over a dozen well raised cubs. But it was not really Zira’s fault. Galamite was bad to begin with. He had never once respected his mother or father. And when he was grown, he didn’t have a problem with showing the Alphas and the rest of the pack that he didn’t respect them either. He was quickly demoted to an Omega and had stayed there ever since. The only reason Kapu had not banished him was because, one, he was Zira’s son and his sister would be heartbroken, and two, because Galamite had been given a perfect, slim, graceful body, prefect for hunting. If he had not been so bitter, he could have easily been the Chief Hunter, but instead he chose a life of rebellion. Even so…these days no one hardly ever spoke. They were all too tired, too hungry and too full of despair at loosing so many of their family members to really care about snapping at each other.
There was a small squeak from the den and Kapu’s head shot up, his ears alert as he starred at the dark den entrance. He already had a small wound on his muzzle from where Silver had bitten him when he had tried to come in the last time he had heard a cub’s tiny voice, so he stayed back, his tail batting heavily on the ground. Galamite merely rolled his eyes and went back to sleep. But a few minutes later he was woken up again as Zira crawled out of the den, smiling softly at Kapu. “Four. Two gray males, a gray female and a black female. Wait a few days and Silver might let you see them.” But the wait didn’t seem to bother Kapu as he lost himself for a moment. He pranced around, his tail wagging like crazy with a puppyish grin on his face. “I’m a dad!!!” Zira watched him with cool, steady eyes. “Indeed brother…you’re a dad.” Kapu trust his maw into the air and howled loudly, telling the whole world of his wonderful news, but he was cut off by a low growl from within the den. “Shut up Kapu, you’re going to wake them up again.” Kapu quickly lowered his maw, looking so dejected that Galamite even laughed. “Their ears aren’t even open yet.” He muttered. Zira seemed to find it all so amusing that she had to step away to calm herself and stop from laughing at him.
But things were not about to get any easier with four new mouths to feed. The next day Kapu and Galamite went out on a hunt. Thanks to Galamite, they were able to catch a rabbit. Kapu went to take it from Galamite so that he could give it to his mate, but Galamite didn’t want to give up his kill. In the end, Kapu attacked him. Galamite, though full of snappy remarks, was not a fool. he surrendered at once and gave the rabbit to Kapu. It was only right that Silver be given the whole rabbit since she was feeding four other members of the pack.
Three days went by before the pack was able to find any more prey and even then, it was just a few small rabbits. It was hardly enough for one of them to survive off of, but they split it up, giving the most to Silver. Another week passed and the consequences came. Silver’s body had been unable to produce enough milk and one of the male cubs died. Silver herself took him from the den and dug at the frozen ground until she had a grave in which she buried him. Kapu had wanted to help, but Silver’s instincts had forced her to push him away. Two days after that the pack ran into a bit of luck. A wounded stag stumbled upon Silver’s den. His leg was broken and he had been too delirious to pay attention to the wolf’s scent. When he had nearly stepped on Zira in the middle of a snowy night, the pack had taken quick action. Kapu had leapt at the stag’s side, digging his fangs into the soft flesh. Zira, who had been startled at first leapt after Kapu, clawing her way to the stag’s back. Silver had heard the noise and, in hunger, leapt from her den. She went for the stag’s flank just as she saw Galamite move. With quick precision, the bitter Omega launched himself at the stag’s throat. The poor beast had been distracted by Silver and he had turned his head, trying to lash out at one of the wolves with his antlers. Galamite’s fangs hit their mark and he pulled back with all his strength, pulling the stag towards the ground. The stag never stood a chance. he collapsed under the weight of four wolves and accepted death quietly.
The kill lasted the four wolves about a week. By this time the cubs had their ears and eyes open and Silver finally brought them out of the den. Not surprisingly, the black female was the first to boldly strut out into the world. Her brother and her sister followed after her, a little unsure of things. Kapu greeted his children happily, sifting them and knocking the black cub over with his nose. When she growled fiercly at him he chuckled and lay down so that he could look into her eyes. She was a spitting image of him when he had been a cub. The cubs spent about five more minutes out of the den before Silver picked them up and took them back in to nurse.
The black cub and the gray male tied for biggest in the litter, but the smaller gray female was not deterred by that. With each passing day the cubs’ personality grew. The smallest female was a quiet, peaceful wolf, born to love and to follow. But she had a I-Don’t-Put-Up-With-Your-Crap attitude that made the others know better than to take advantage of her. None of the cubs were given names as was custom in the Moniku pack. Cubs died too often to give them names and then have your heart torn out when they did not live. But even as much, the winter began to melt away and the prey seemed to be coming back. The cubs grew quickly and soon they hardly ever slept in the den. The black cub was a born leader just like her father. She had a few tussles with her brother, but the gray male was too passive to care much about leading.
When spring came, the cubs were weaned. The pack was strong again and it looked good for the cubs. Silver and Kapu were even talking about names. One night, when Kapu was getting ready to go on a hunt with Silver and Galamite, the black cub strayed away from the others, Silver grew frantic and Kapu was about to go and find their daughter. But the black cub trotted back from the darkness, her head and tail held high and a proud look about her. A fat field mouse dangled from her maw. She was so proud that Silver had barely been able to tell her off. The cubs were growing fast.

Chapter 2, The Loss of Life
By the age of three months the cubs still had not received their names. The black cub proved to be nothing but a ball of trouble though. She was never satisfied with how far her parents allowed her roam. Some nights she had even snuck out and explored. But they always ended in the same way, the black cub returning home before or right after her parents noticed she was gone. She had even managed to wriggle out from under Zira’s watchful eye which, according to every one of her children, was impossible. Her brother and sister always tried to follow her, but she only let them when she knew she was going on a very safe exploration.
Despite what the black cub told her parents about how safe she was and how not dangerous it was, she had had many scrapes with death already. A hawk had once saw her as easy prey and had attacked her. She had been terrified when she had seen it swooping down on her, but somehow she had got her feet working and she had leapt into some thick brush. The young black wolf cub had stayed there until the hawk had left, but the event seemed to not bother her because she was out again the next day. And it was on that day that the black pup meant her very first bear. In short, he was big, ugly and mean. She had stumbled upon his scent and had tracked him down despite the danger signals flaring in her mind.
She stumbled out of the brush and came upon him eating berries. Cautiously, she inched nearer to him, making herself as big as she could and growling fiercely. The bear turned around and blinked stupidly at her before he realized that she was growling at her. The bear walked slowly towards the wolf cub, his heavy feet slamming into the fresh spring ground. It was about this time that the wolf cub noticed how big the bear was and how sharp his claws looked. She backed away, hackles raised as she snarled. But that only pissed the bear off. He stood on his hind legs and made a swipe for the wolf cub. Without so much as thinking she launched herself at his paw, lips curled back and fangs at the ready. Luck was on her side as her fangs sank into the bear’s paw and as she avoided his claws. But it took the large beast only a moment to realize he was being attacked. His other paw came around and hit the pup heavily on her side. Her grip was torn loose as her small body went, literally, flying through the air. She landed heavily, rolling head over tail as the force of the blow took its course. But when she stopped she rolled quickly to her feet and was up again, rage in her golden eyes. In another instant she tipped her muzzle upward and howled what was to be her very first battle cry. The black cub launched herself at the bear again, circling around behind the slow animal and leaping in to bite his back. The bear roared, more in anger than in pain and turned to swipe at her, but she had already leapt away and darted off to his other side. In another instant she leapt up and daringly bit his side. The bear was way to confused at where the small lump of fir was to be able to turn and swipe at her that time. The black wolf cub ran around behind him again, grinning now as she fought. But even so, she was not far from the den and her pack had heard her howl. Kapu and Silver had leapt up from their nap and had run off towards the sound, fear beating in tune with their strides. They arrived together and stopped dead as the saw the bear. Each of them did a quick survey for their daughter before they prepared to leap at the bear, but again, they stopped dead and did a double take. They watched in shock as their tiny, swift little pup gave the poor bear hell. She seemed just as uninjured as the bear; however, she looked as if she was having the time of her life and the bear looked like he wanted nothing more than to get away from the little demon child. Kapu and Silver were grinning ear to ear when they leapt in and growled deeply at the bear, warning him to get lost. He did not need telling twice before he turned and lopped away. The black cub snarled after him and then trotted lightly to her parents, smiling as if nothing had just happened. “Hello mom, hello dad. Nice morning isn’t it? What kind of rabbit was that?” She looked so innocent and curious and Kapu and Silver could only laugh. Once again, Kapu didn’t have the heart to scold her. But Silver seemed to be able to find her voice. “That was a bear honey…and they are very powerful and dangerous.” The black cub merely cocked her head and looked as if she was thinking about it. Her tail was wagging slowly back and forth. “Oh…okay then…a bear.” She smiled again and looked at her dad innocently. “So…a rabbit turns into a bear when it grows up like you guys?” Kapu chuckled and nuzzled her, knocking her over like he always did when he played with her. “My little fierce warrior.” They all headed home, tails wagging and smiles strong.
But like always, things did not stay happy for long. Not a week after the incident with the bear, Kapu spotted a human in his pack lands. He did not bother the man, but he gathered up his pack and cubs and had a good long discussion about humans, telling his cubs that they were never to bother them. He told them of how they were the top predator…even over wolves and how they sometimes did not kill for food. His children had a million questions, but with the help of the others, he answered of the them. Humans were sometimes they needed to understand, for if they did not, they would be killed in a heartbeat. Kapu’s own parents had been killed by humans for no reason other than there fur. It was the brutal truth, but his cubs soon knew everything. they knew the general picture of how guns worked and even the general picture of cars and roads. When it was all done, they all curled up close together…but no one really slept.
On a rainy spring day a few days later, everything got horribly worse. Galamite and Zira were out taking a walk, enjoying the light rain and some time alone to talk. Galamite was walking a little ways ahead of his mother, listening to her ask him once again to respect Kapu and Silver. But he simply rolled his eyes, taking another step. Something moved from under his paw and he quickly moved to leap away. But even the best hunter of the Moniku pack was not fast enough to dodge the steel jaws of the trap as it leapt up and caught his leg. But Galamite did not even cry out in pain. He simply growled and started chewing on the steel jaws. Zira was frantic and she instantly howled, calling for Kapu. Her brother came quickly. All three wolves tried chewing on the trap and even digging at it, but it was not good enough. Galamite sat where he was, gazing calmly out towards where the mountains brushed against the sky. Kapu spoke in almost a whisper. “You are going to have to chew your leg free.” Galamite only chuckled. “As if.” Zira whimpered fearfully. “Galamite…there is no other way…they will come and they will shoot you if you don’t get free.” But before he could respond the sound of voices reached their ears. Kapu was instantly on alert. “The hunters…they are coming to check their traps.” Zira whimpered deeply again. “Please my son…please, they will kill you.” But Galamite only smiled at her. “Fate is funny mom. I think it is time.” Kapu was slowly backing away. “Zira, we have to go. There is nothing we can do anymore.” But his sister turned tearful eyes onto him and shook her head. “I am not leaving my son.” The humans were almost upon them. Kapu whimpered to his sister, but he knew that look in her eyes. She would not go. She would stay here and die trying to save her son. Kapu wanted to stay and help her, but just then, Silver’s howl rose up into the air. The had got the scent of the humans and she was calling him back to her and their cubs. He went quickly to Zira and licked her cheek, nuzzling her gently. “I love you sister.” She smiled at him. “I love you too big brother.” The voices were so close that Kapu could see them through the trees. He went to Galamite and starred at him sadly. “I will miss you. You were a great hunter.” The Omega turned him to and smirked. “Oh, he is finally going soft now is he? Don’t you dare raise my ranking so I wont have to die an Omega…I like where I am at.” Kapu smiled at him and then bowed his head, pushing back the emotions. There was a loud crack and the ground beside Kapu exploded. Without another word he leapt away, trying to shut out the sounds he heard. But it didn’t work. He heard his sister snarl just before she leapt at the humans. He heard the loud crack and the yelp of pain as his sister fell. It took everything he had to keep from turning around. He heard Galamite’s howl of rage as he leapt at the hunters and as they laughed at him since he couldn’t reach them. He could almost see it as they leveled their gun, aiming carefully. And then came another crack, cutting off Galamite’s snarl. Everything was silent as Kapu ran back to his mate and cubs.
Another month passed and the pack mourned. But they forced themselves to go on. Kapu still carried his head high as he fed his family. He spent his spare him teaching his cubs about hunting and fighting. Kapu had decided that he would take his daughter out and show her some of the pack lands…that way she could see them and he safe at the same time. They were on their way back to the dens when they heard a loud crack and Silver howl in pain and rage. Kapu turned to his daughter and told her to stay put. He leapt off towards the den, hackles raised and golden eyes set. Fear had spread through him like icy water. Even though she had been told to stay put, the young black cub followed swiftly after her father, coming in just in time to see everything.
There were two hunters, one man and one woman and they had tracked the wolves to their den. Silver had been laying outside the den, watching her son and daughter wrestle. The hunters had snuck up on them and had shot Silver in the side with a shotgun. The wound was fatal, but Silver was not about to let the men get her cubs. She yelled at them to run into the woods as she launched herself towards the hunters. Kapu came within sight just in time to see his mate attack one of the hunters, her fangs ripping into the woman’s arm. But there was a second crack and Kapu watched as his mate fell, her throat a bloody mess. Instant anger pumped through him and he ran faster. Almost right after Silver fell there was another crack and Kapu’s son’s chest exploded with blood. The young cub fell and died quickly. Only his gray daughter was left. She leapt towards the woods, but was knocked to the side as another loud crack echoed through the air. Kapu’s gray daughter fell upon the ground, breathing only a few more breaths before the life drained out of her.
Torn by grief and rage, Kapu forgot about everything his father had taught him…about how you could not seek revenge on humans. The woman was dragging Silver’s body into the open, holding her bloody arm to her side just as Kapu broke into sight behind her. He let out a single bark and she turned to see him…only in time to be knocked to the ground. kapu’s fangs closed over her throat and he squeezed his jaws shut, shaking his head to the side as he tore the woman’s throat out. The man had his gun now and was aiming it at Kapu…but just then, the black wolf cub came in from behind the man and latched her jaws over his ankle. His shot, meant from Kapu’s chest, went high and to the left and hit his shoulder. But even then, Kapu didn’t stop. The black cub moved out of the way and watched as her father tackled the human. His gun went flying and almost hit the cub. Kapu tore into the man, racking his fangs along the man’s arms and chest, breaking the man’s wrist in his jaws. Even though Kapu could have done it quickly, he seemed to be enjoying the sweet revenge as he mauled the man. Kapu tore at the man’s face with his fangs and claws, blinding him and slicing through his tender flesh. After a few minutes, the black wolf cub realized that her father was not even going to touch the man’s throat. He was just going to keep ripping, keep tarring until the man slowly bled to death. The scene was gruesome…like something you would see in a horror movie, but the young cub watched with cold satisfaction as the human was literally tore apart, piece by piece.
Kapu looked down the piles of blood and flesh strewn across his home, cold anguish in his deep golden eyes. After a moment he walked slowly to each of his dead cubs, closing their eyes with his nose and licking their muzzles sadly. The black cub had never seen her father like this before. He was covered in blood, his tail drooped and his head low. While he was saying his last good byes to her siblings, the black wolf cub trotted tightly to her mother. She didn’t quite understand the concept of death…least not the death of her mother. She stopped by her mother’s head, wrinkling her nose at the scent of blood before she nudged her mother’s mother, her tail wagging a little. But Silver did not move. The young wolf cocked her head to the side and nuzzled her again, whimpering softly. But Silver remained motionless and a cold fear set itself inside the young femme’s heart. Overtaken by sudden realization that her mother would not get up again, would never smile and speak softly to her again, would never curl up next to her at night again, the black wolf cub sat down and did the only thing she could do, something that countless generations of her species had done before to grieve for the loss of a loved one. The wolf cub thrust her muzzle skyward and howled to the moon, begging her to take the pain from her heart. The sound was heart wrenching and anything but puppyish. Kapu turned away from her dead daughter and looked at Kiowa, his eyes brushing with tears that he had not shed since the death of his own parents. He walked to his daughter and took his place by her side and he too howled over his mate’s dead body, tears leaking down his cheeks. The song of grief spun into the air and many creatures lowered their heads in sad respect. But the one creature who did not…was man, for it was they who did not understand their own curse.
Father and daughter howled for a long time, crying and mourning through their song until cold exhaustion overtook them. They drew the song to a close together, looking up at what was now the night sky. There was no moon tonight. Without a word, Kapu went to his mate and closed her empty eyes, bowing his head and closing his eyes whilst he said a silent prayer. His nuzzled her and licked her cheek lovingly before he glanced back at his daughter. She was trying her very hardest to be strong, but her wet cheeks gave her away. Kapu smiled weakly and went to her, nuzzling her gently. She whimpered softly and closed her eyes, nuzzling him back. “It will be alright my little one. We will move deeper into the pack lands…away from the humans.” The black cub nodded her head and followed Kapu as they began walking. Things were only going to get worse and the Moniku Alpha knew that…but he would be damned if he let them get his daughter.
They walked through the night and the morning, sleeping only when the sun was at its highest point. They kept traveling like this for days. Kapu caught rabbits to feed himself and his daughter. Within a weeks time they were deep within the wilderness, in the heart of the spacious pack lands. The two wolves rested and the days slipped by. Kapu taught his daughter more of hunting and even began sparring with her. She was an excellent fighter. The months passed and soon the cub was no longer a cub. She had grown from scraggly little ball of fur into a tall, slender, muscular and all around gorgeous she-wolf. The season had changed, bringing summer and then fall and then winter. But this winter was very mild and so it was that Kapu and the black she-wolf had no problem catching enough prey to survive. As the months had passed they had seen nothing of any humans, but little did they know that wolves all over were being bounty hunted because of the humans Kapu had killed. But for now, father and daughter were safe.
Kapu was standing in a small clearing, a grin plastered across his maw. Head held at shoulder height and feet slightly spread, the Moniku Alpha gazed at his daughter. She was standing on the other side of the clearing, her stance matching her father’s perfectly save one thing. She looked completely relaxed. Every muscle in her body was held loose where as Kapu’s muscles were held like the tight springs of a coil. The stunningly beautiful young female smirked calmly at her father and waited, her golden orbs glistening with mischief. All of the sudden Kapu leapt forward, darting over the ground and moving straight towards his daughter. She did not move. He swerved off to the left and then darted quickly to the right, his feet moving with experience.
