Title: What Do You Do When Inspiration Fails You?
Nikaty - March 5, 2006 07:58 AM (GMT)
Okay, I've got several charries that need posts made. My problem? Not really much inspiration. Anytime I think "oh, so-and-so needs a post" my next thought is "but what do I post?"
Anyone have that happen? What's the remedy?

Tequilla.
No, I'm kidding. *Cough* Just give it some time. [Esspresso is a good one too] I usually carry a spiral notebook to jot down ideas during the day incase I lose 'em afore I get home. For SotW alone of have 21+ spirals. Ya'll ain't cheap.
But like I said, just go outside and watch a bug or something.. It'll hit ya. :P

21+ spirals? Wow, you must get a lot of ideas throughout the day. lol

Oh come on! You've GOT to be one of the most talented RPers currently active on SotW.
Anyway, I have an idea I'm going to try and put into practice. I think my problem is I don't exactly feel as if I've improved much since I've started RPing 7 months ago. Having RPed this much time, I should not have to count my sentences before hitting the "add reply" button to make sure I'm about to send a post with the minimum sentences. I should just be able to do a glance at my post and KNOW I have AT LEAST 15 sentences. So what am I going to do?
Instead of writing up posts right in the reply box like I've been doing, I'm going to try to write them in a wordpad document. That way, I can be looking at previous posts as I'm forming my post. Then when I think my post is done I can go back and look at parts that could be improved. That way, if I don't want to type my post and edit it all in one sitting before submitting, I can save it onto my computer and get back to it.
Hopefully doing it that way will help, instead of just going "well, I've been in the add reply page for an hour now, and I'm getting bored, but I have to finish this since I'm typing it right here."
I think that might be where my problem is. We shall see if my theory is correct.

Well, I dunno if my opinon is much needed here, but I usually read back over my charries bio's and that inspires me enough to force out a post when I am desperate.

Hrmm, I can't risk writing anything down because my parents would freak if they found out I RP. I do a lot of thinking though. A good idea is not to get very worked up about it. Think about how each character would react, regardless if anything pertains directly to them or not, then post that reaction. In fact, you may find they want to put in their own two cents. ;)

I like the idea of going back over the bio as well..helps keep in perspective who your charrie is and just how he/she might react. Reading back over past posts (both yours and others) can also help. It can be hard to post when nothing in particular is going on...I find I'm much more inclined to post if there' some sort of action or drama (poketh Fal ^.^) going on. Otherwise, you just kinda feel like you're re-posting shtuff.
Writers block happens to everyone at one point or another. I've found the best way to deal is to take a break for a while and not try to force anything out. Perhaps go read over the storyline in another pack. You never know when inspiration might strike! :D

*Rather shamefully throws up hand* I've lost the knack for Rping more than once, sometimes a month. I'll go just on liking one charrie, and wanting to just forget the other-pats poor Avy, I really need to post her-I just can't seem to want to post, but if you wait a while, eventually you'll want to...That's the only thing for me...but I will try to use the other good people's advice to help myself, and maybe they'll help you to! Waiting isn't always the best answer....

I think about what I wanna post when I go to sleep XD
Experts say that when you go to sleep, you remember everything when you wake up  So it gets easy to remember, but post when ya wake up :toilet:

Dead thread! Whee! But I finally thought of something to say that I hadn't said! ^_^
For me, part of my inspiration comes from the way my characters have grown up. I often imagine how they would interact if they met. Rereading their histories often gives me little things to put in to beef up a sentence count, like having them remember a situation similar to the one they're in. I write down not only what they do and say, but also what they think and feel. It not only gives you a sense of knowing your character, but it lets other people get between their ears too and understand where they're coming from.
Oh, and I unashamedly still count all my sentences when doing anything. *thumbsup*
