Title: Magic Guidelines (& A Bit Of Slayer Info.)

Oriana Lark - July 8, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
Very few in Olencia are gifted with magical abilities. Those that are rarely rogues, for the Slayers find them and take them as there own – and remember that there are less than fifty Slayers in the world, including their apprentices. The Slayers need the magic-users of the world in their rank; otherwise they would not be able to exist as a faction. The magic that the Slayers use is much different than what the regular world comes into contact with. The Slayers do not possess magic within them, nor does it magically appear either. In order to make one thing happen, the Slayers must draw on something else be it the life of an animal, a plant, a human… Sometimes they can use energy from a nearby storm or the potential or kinetic energy of something nearby. A Slayer’s strength depends on how/much he or she can draw. Some people are strong enough to kill, while others can only draw energy equivalent to a long day at work. Whatever the case, the magic is dangerous without proper training because the user can accidentally draw on himself/herself or loved ones without meaning to, usually leading to death. Slayers cannot create elements out of nothing either. For example, if he/she wants to use wind, there must be air present; if he/she wants to make a fire, there has to be heat & oxygen somewhere; if he/she wants to create an avalanche, all the rocks and mountains must already be there; etc.

So let’s say that Slayer Risane wanted to re-forge his sword. First, there needed to be something he could draw on for energy. He decided to use a nearby tree. Second, the materials needed for the forging must already be there. He decided to use the iron within the earth below him. Third, he needed heat for the re-forging, so he used strength from the nearby fire.

Now, the effects of this magic on the victim of the drawing (the tree, in the above example), can be devastating. (Note that the victim of the drawing can also be the drawer.) A trained magic-user will know how to draw just enough so the life does not die or is destroyed, but an untrained magic-user will have hardly any control over that. The person could be dead – or worse. Often times an untrained magic-user will leave effects more devastating that death – mental problems, physical injuries, fatal illnesses, etc. Thankfully, since the Slayers keep a tight grip on their recruits, this does not happen often.

The magic that the rest of the world usually comes into contact with is contained in magic items that were created by the Slayers in the past (or the current). The energy needed for the magic has already been drawn into these items and stored up for continuous use. No item may be used forever – it has its limits, like the magic stored within it. Each of these items is stored as a blessing or a curse. Perhaps a farmer received a blessing rake that makes his crops grow every time he uses it (but it’s only useful for 10 rakings). A man who stood in the way of the Slayers received an amulet that drained the life of the lover he gave it to (i.e. a curse). Magic items are able to contain their magic for thousands of years, but once the magic is used up, it’s used up – until a Slayer might restore it. Sometimes, if not correctly done, the magic item may even burn up.

Magic items are common, but not necessarily abundant. If you wish your character to have a magic item, please explain what it is, where it came from, why your character has it, what it does, and how long it is good for (as well as any times that it has been used). Classify the item as a blessing or a curse. Not all members will be allowed to have magic items.

If you wish your character to be a Slayer, please specify your character’s strength – Extremely Strong, Strong, Above Average, Average, Below Average, Weak. There will be hardly any characters accepted that are above average and higher. There will be no rogue magic-users that are above average and higher, though we will not accept very may rogue magic-users anyway.

This was highly confusing I’m sure, so if you have any questions, please address them to the overlords in the Support forum.
