Title: Cold Blooded Rule
Description: A statistical analysis

Yak - January 20, 2005 08:37 PM (GMT)
Everyone knows the cold blooded rule is great. But just how great? To find out, we set a team of monkeys on a store of computers. After we stopped laughing and cleared up the mess, we got a spreadsheet out. Following are the percentage chances (to the nearest whole percent) of rolling the given number or less on the lowest of three dice, followed by the same thing for a straight 2d6

#...3d6....2d6

2....7%.....3%
3....23%...8%
4....40%...17%
5....54%...28%
6....68%...42%
7....79%...58%
8....87%...72%
9....95%...83%
10..98%...92%
11..100%.97%
12..100%.100%

Now 11 on 3d6 picking lowest two has only only one result that fails (666), of which the chance is 1/216 so it appears to be 100%, but isn't.

As you can see, the cold blooded rule equates Ld 7 (normal) to about Ld 5 (CB), making Skinks as good as Humans!

Further analysis to come...

That's pretty interesting.

When I first read the Cold-blooded rule I thought to myself "Wow! That's good!" Now we have statistical evidence on how good.

If only the dice gods didn't hate me so <_<

Hey, I dont think ive ever seen anyone do this. Its pretty helpful... I looked at the cold blooded rule for the first time and thought it was good, but skinks as good as humans? Awesome. Ill have to tell my empire friend that.

Anyways, thanks for this! Im sure it will be helpful.

hey this is great the odd thing is, is that this is the first time i have seen the statisitcal break down of cold booldedness on a lizardmen site. the funny thing is over at drucii.net they did this along time ago in some old artical about fighting lizardmen. sombody should sticky this along with all the other odds of dice rolling in our game.

i once worked out with my brother that the cold blooded rule nearly made your leadership as good as if it were 2 points higher. i.e. cold blooded with leadership 7 is nearly as good as just normal leadership 9.

But I'd never sat down and worked it out like this. Its really interesting to see all the probabilities lol, thats why my skinks run away all the time!!!

Our saurus are almost as good as dwarfs and better than elves so thats not much to complain about, remember fondly though when they were leadership 8! they never broke!!

Great stuff there Yak!!

@CM: you mean you never knew avian?! He's done a lot of this things...(he's from portent)
The complete set of calculations (incl re-rolls) can be found HERE.

Shadow - February 1, 2005 10:07 AM (GMT)
lol I never knew Avian either lol.
Cheers for the link Kul.
The one problem with being cold blooded is that although a Saurus has the equivalent of being nearly Leadership 9 against stuff like Banshee's he's only leadership 7, cold blooded has no effect.

Huanloq-the brain-burned-skink - February 3, 2005 07:23 PM (GMT)
why have they only Ld 7 and why is there no use of coldblooded against banshees?

lizguy - March 23, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
I also ran analysis when the leadership test can be rerolled (such as break tests near a battle standard).
I think the most interesting point is that Temple Guard with a Slann will pass their bread test 99 out of 100 tests! They are pretty much unbreakable (except of course auto-breaking).

# 3d6 2d6
2 14% 5%
3 36% 16%
4 59% 30%
5 77% 48%

9 100% 97%
10 100% 99%

12 100% 100%

avain's down... :(
so I guess you are right.
although it ain't 100%, you can always roll 18 on 3D6..

lizguy - March 23, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
The 100% comes from rounding to the nearest whole percent. Remember these numbers are based on getting to reroll the leadership test (such as break tests near a battle standard).

The main thing I was trying to figure out was the odds of a Temple Guard with a Slann breaking. The odds that they will not break are 98.8748% which makes them unbreakable for all practicle purposes (except for auto-breaking of course).

Here are the numbers out 4 decimal places.

# 3d6 2d6
2 14.2309% 5.4900%
3 35.8768% 15.9993%
4 58.5549% 30.5678%
5 77.2661% 47.9309%
6 89.8238% 65.9656%
7 96.2403% 82.6705%
8 98.8748% 92.3145%
9 99.7459% 97.1941%
10 99.9667% 99.3033%
11 99.9986% 99.9219%
12 100.0000% 100.0000%

Kul - March 23, 2005 06:49 PM (GMT)
hmm, lol
I think I missed the "with re-roll" part ;)

Revlid - July 24, 2005 04:36 PM (GMT)
Okay, that's all well and good, but Shadow, (I'm not sure if I misunderstand you) why are you saying Saurus have Leadership 7? They have Leadership 8.

Shadow said a Banshee has leadership 7, not a Saurus.

sotekslann - May 6, 2006 08:36 AM (GMT)
dont ask why but i seem to be really good at rolling leadership dice, without using weighted dice. my skinks harly ever run away and they got a leadership of 5 B)

Little Skink - June 9, 2006 01:13 AM (GMT)
I always thought that with cold-blooded...it effectively gave us a 1+ to our ldr....so it would be like saurus with ldr9...etc.
