Title: Why'd You Start Lizardmen?
Description: A good question!
philleehellphia - October 20, 2004 10:56 PM (GMT)
Okay, i would have to say, that the 5th edition terradons, totally drew me in to Lizardmen. Now, i would have to say that the Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur managed to draw me back to warhammer, when 6th ed lizardmen was created!
What about you????
Kai-Huan - October 20, 2004 11:38 PM (GMT)
The thing that brought me into Lizardmen was the awsomeniss of skinks and kroxs.
Conan the Sauruss - October 20, 2004 11:40 PM (GMT)
I started because you got so many of the darn guys in the 5th edition box! Right after I got that they put out 6th edition and everyone started selling off their old models - I was able to get my entire at half price or less. I kept playing them because I loved the sauruss and the kroxigors. Now in 6th edition I have been duly impressed by my little skinks with blowpipes!! That and I love all the new models (except the new krox. and salamander - but that's just a personal prefference)
Cool question.

Kai-Huan - October 20, 2004 11:54 PM (GMT)
I agree the new salys are not as spiffy as in 5th.
wintermute - October 21, 2004 12:05 AM (GMT)
i started with the lizards as soon as they were released back in the day cause i liked them right off the bat. before them i was going dwarf.
anyway, went off to college and have been out of the game for awhile so when i recently picked up my books/army again they were all outdated. just now starting up a new lizard army now that i have the new books.
i'm using my old KROX cause they are way cooler looking. not sure if i'm going to use my old saurus or not....and my old skinks all have bows, so i'll just have them if i ever want to field a southlander army.
any of you guy's use your old saurus in your new army?
Gyulkus_chaos_saurus - October 22, 2004 12:30 AM (GMT)
when i was like 7 my cousins palyed warhammer and 1 of em had lizadmen and i loved em, so about 6 years later when i got into warhammer i picked lizzies because theyre so awesome looking!and i like the fighting style too.
casual_moose - October 22, 2004 12:56 AM (GMT)
why did I pickLizzies is a good question. I almost didnt. I spne lots of time looking at wood elves, high elves, and empire. When I was looking into the army, I went through different "phases". I would think high elves are "teh roxxors" (hehehe) then empire. By the time it came to pick, I was in a Lizzie. phase.
That and skinks are awesome.
Arent you guys glad I was in a lizzie phase? I wouldnt be here if I wasnt. (wait, would you be happier then? Hehehe. ;) )
zero - October 22, 2004 06:24 PM (GMT)
i picked lizzies because of the way they look and because i like there abilities and fighting stile. i was debating on play either the lizzies dwarfs or the hordes of chaos but lizzies just caught my eye more
Garoq-Gar - October 24, 2004 08:10 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, well I have major decision issues and am easily distracted by pretty shiney models.
So yeah, why did I start Lizardmen well I walked into gw with my gf picked about 5 different armies and asked her which I should collect, and she picked Lizardmen. So yeah, I started Lizardmen because my gf said...
Myself - October 24, 2004 08:43 AM (GMT)
cool, you have a girlfriend! ;)
hmmz, rokay then anywayze, kinda cool idea atcually, starting an army because youre girlfriend wanted it. Ah well ;)
EDIT
though, just realised I didn't post here yet ;)
two years ago a kid from school had a gw catalogue with him and I basicly fell in love with the 5th edition lm models.
Skinkhero - October 24, 2004 10:24 AM (GMT)
Me and a friend decided to get a few models, paint them, then learn the rules. So happens I found a small box of 5th edition Saurus and thought they were so cool!
Elrohir - October 24, 2004 01:12 PM (GMT)
I only started Lizardmen in 6th edition, but I've had high elves since 5th.
The reason I started is because I wanted to have an army that had high strength and toughness (in contrast to High Elves) aswell as some pretty powerful close-combat units and one which was on the side of good. Lizardmen were exactly what I needed so I got em :) .
The Exploited - October 28, 2004 03:18 PM (GMT)
Awsome Modles :huh: carnosaur ::drools::
Nice hth
Awsome magic
Awsome magic items
Awsome everything
Skinkhero - October 28, 2004 06:15 PM (GMT)
Not forgetting that Lizardmen are so cool and original! ;)
lambobolt - October 29, 2004 02:43 AM (GMT)
lizardmen were my first army also, but not because i wanted to use them for warhammer. i actually bought them for dungeons and dragons, which at the time i was putting together a lizardmen setting in a large swamp, and didnt like hte D&D figures. i stumbledinto a deal to buy the lizardmen from 5th Edition because the guy just wanted the rules. then i saw the Krox, oooh la la! So i ended up getting about 2500pts of figures before i even started looking at warhammer. unfortunately, once i learned the rules, "I went to the dark side" and started collecting chaos, but always have a special bond with the lizzies. unfortunately, the new release for 6th edition didnt do it for me because i really despise the new salamander and krox (personal opinion), but i do like the new army comp. and once the carnasaur came out, then i went back to the fondness of the little green guys.

[COLOR=blue]G'day all
i started Lizarmen originally for the slann, cause of his magic choices, i was actually considering HE before i was in the direction of the slann
after a few games with the slann, i found that its not feasible in a 2K battle(which is the size i ususally play with a lord choice), and was seriously considering selling my Lizardmen, but i just couldnt resist the pull of the dinos!
Myself - November 2, 2004 12:47 PM (GMT)
the slann is very effective if you use him playing the brickwall or the lone slann tactic. Have you tried them?
The Exploited - November 3, 2004 08:00 PM (GMT)
Myself could you discuss the tatics for those two ways of using the slann
Oruk, Scar-Vetran - November 15, 2004 12:40 AM (GMT)
Yes, please enlighten us with those tactics.
Personally, the Slaan were the main reason for my starting of Lizardmen. I liked the model, and it's potential to be an ass-kicker. Plus, the Terradons and Skinks also helped. As did the Steg. And Sarus. And Cold Ones.
Come to think of it, I love all the models!
(Sallies could be better, though...)
Gyulkus_chaos_saurus - November 15, 2004 01:40 AM (GMT)
personally, i despise the 5th edition saurus and krox, but thats just me
casual_moose - November 15, 2004 01:46 AM (GMT)
brickwall is a tactic created by the tactical genius known as Mossmac on other forums. You put temple-gurd in a long line, two ranks deep, and use it as a "wall" for the enemy to batter themselves against. If you want to know more, I could dig up a link.
Lone slann is having the slann without temple guard protecting him, sometimes using jungle swarms to tie up would-be attackers. He basically moves around and plays a supporting roll, correct, Myself?
Shadow - November 21, 2004 06:36 PM (GMT)
Hey casual mouse i've seen that saurus tactic used twice before, it can be a bit of a double edged sword though because it lacks the combat resolution that it would normally get from ranks which can be crucial.
The first time I saw it used it worked well. The second time it got charged by some Bretonnian knights and lost on combat resolution, which it might have drawn with a +3 bonus for ranks, and got charged down.
But bad considering how expensive Temple Guard are!
Can be a good tactic against armies with weak basic troops or even reasonable ones.
Just my opinion anyway
The Exploited - November 22, 2004 07:47 PM (GMT)
i didnt think that temple guard could run from combat, also if its no trouble casual could you dig a link up for me?
Huan-Gor - November 22, 2004 07:51 PM (GMT)
i think their sacted duty rule makes them stubborn when they guard the slann.
a casual moo - November 22, 2004 08:29 PM (GMT)
I started lizardmen because I got bored of scaven, dwarves, elves, and 40K and wanted something new. I looked through the army lists for all of the races and decided that lizardmen were the guys I liked best. As it happens, between me and my cousin, we have all of the army books. ...<thinks>... B) . Right from when I bought my very first 24 skinks I was enyoying lizardmen far more than any of the other races... bar dwarves maybe.
Getting to the thread at the moment <<reads last 10 posts>> ok. I've looked all over TPV2 and I can't find the tatics <_< <_< . <<pulls out hair>>. Meh, CM will have to find it.
--me-- :)
Shadow - November 23, 2004 01:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah the Temple Guard are stubborn but that only means that they take unmodified leadership tests if they're guarding the Slann, i.e. he's with them in the regiment. If you've deployed them in a long two rank line then the Slann's not with them and hence they lose the Stubborn rule and hence are vulnerable to being broken by combat resolution because of the lack of ranks. (I think they only get the stubborn rule if their guarding the Slann but I might be wrong. I haven't got my army book with me at uni so I'm just trying to remember it. Apologies if im wrong.)
Huan-Gor - November 23, 2004 02:12 PM (GMT)
i thought that you could only take temple guard if you take a slann, and that the slann have to go into the temple guard unit (if you take temple guard). a long two rank line with slann in the middle of the second rank would work.
Shadow - November 24, 2004 12:30 AM (GMT)
Isn't there a diagram in the army book about how to set the regiment up? And actually I think you might be right that the Temple Guard have to deploy with the Slann.
Oh by the way I chose the Lizardmen for two main reasons:
1 they came with the boxed game (lol)
2 I've always loved dinosaurs and the oppurtunity to command an army of them was too good to miss!!
Plus I think the models are some of the best around, the Saurus lord on Carnosaur for example is just awesome. The only thing I don't like about the 6th edition models are the new Kroxigor, they look really spindely and weedy (they look old enough to be the grand parents of my 5th edition ones) compared to the old ones. I like both pairs of Saurus, but the new skinks are a vast improvement!
Prefer the old Salamanders though.
casual_moose - November 24, 2004 01:49 AM (GMT)
Sorry guys, I didn't notice this thread for a bit..
A link to the brick wall tactic can be found here...
Brick Wall By MozzmacIts in there somewhere. I wish the search function worked, too bad thers something wrong with it (Due to invisionfree I believe).
Anyways, sorry for the late reply, and enjoy!
Huanloq-the brain-burned-skink - November 30, 2004 03:44 PM (GMT)
I started Lizardmen , because of two reasons:
1) very good models(my first love were the COR because they are sitting near the ground). Sorry, I can't say that I don#t love the new salies, because they are so cool
2) They are guardians of the whole world aren't they so they are the most good(not evil) people
Kul - November 30, 2004 08:48 PM (GMT)
If I'd start lizards, it would be because:
1. They have a cool playing style
2. Their minis rule!
3. Their background is good
4. There are very cool lizard forums
5. All lizardmen units are really cool!
casual_moose - December 7, 2004 06:31 PM (GMT)
ok guys, all those other posts have been deleted, and weve sorted/are sorting someof this out, So lets get back on topic!
Why I started lizardmen is earlier in this topic, I believe? Though I agree full-heartedly with Kul.
D'ya Tinki Saurus Warrior - December 8, 2004 12:27 PM (GMT)
Well.. It was my Birthday.. and I decided to treat myself to a few new Regiments of Stunties..so off I went to the local model shop.. and lo and behold.. the Lizardmen Army was finally released! So I bought the Army Book, 2 Sets of Saurus and 2 Sets of Skinks... ohh.. and a Scar-Veteran... I still have those units and use them regularly... and my Scar-Veteran... well.. I dont think he has ever missed a battle in all my games!
Stunties are all fine and well, and I liked their toughness and ability to pass most leadership tests.... but hell.. Lizards are just as tough and get extra dice for that damned leadership... so no contest!
jewnia - December 9, 2004 10:38 AM (GMT)
I started on lizzies cause my worst enemy bet me his slann and two priests if i couldnt massacre his stunties with my DE well I thrashed him and after doing some research i decided to stick with them!
Shadow - December 9, 2004 12:14 PM (GMT)
lol well played. Lizardmen are a solid army and as most people on this site would testify are really cool army to play with. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years now and its always been my favourite.
Krogak-Loq - December 22, 2004 11:13 PM (GMT)
I startded lizardmen because
1: Reptiles rule
2: Ive always been interested in reptiles
and 3: Theyre so fun to paint
Poeten - December 27, 2004 12:31 AM (GMT)
They seemed quite original, and i really liked Kroq Gars model.
PowerSkink5000 - January 5, 2005 08:19 AM (GMT)
Well I started as a 40k player. (Tyranids) We had local events frequently and lots of 40k Mega-Battles. There were two Fantasy players who were all alone, playing each other while everyone around them played 40k and ran tournaments. One was an avid Skaven player and the other was an Empire player.
Around the middle of 4th edition 40k, we suddenly had a drastic drop in 40k players. A lot of people stopped showing up and ditched us completely. Yet...the two Fantasy players remained, playing each other still. Skaven Vs. Empire. This is when we began to take notice of Fantasy and the way it was played. Some of us bought our first rule books and army books. Some of us remaining began to study the rules for 5th edition Fantasy. It was at this point where we drew our lines, picked out and declaired our official races/armies and began collecting to play.
Personally, I studied the Skaven player. He was quite arrogant in the capibilities of his army...and I found out that he beat the Empire player's butt constantally. Then after discovering that the remainder of players were collecting evil races like Chaos, Orcs and Goblins and Vampire Counts...that pushed me to want a good-guy army. At that point, I HATED Skaven! I wanted to shut him up. So I looked to the fluff of Good-Guy armies, looking for who hated the Skaven the most. I came upon LIZARDMEN. I read the rules, made my first army list which contained lots of Saurus, a Stegadon, some Terradons and some Salamanders.
I played my first game of Fantasy with my Lizardmen army vs. Chaos (Slannesh). He beat me, but I learned a lot from my first game. Next I played against Orcs and Goblins and barely won. It was at that point were I fell in love with the Stegadon. He just kicked so much ass! Not to mention that half of the O&G player's army ran away from it nearly the whole time due to Terror! Eventually I got a chance to play against the Skaven player...who won all his games up until this point. Just as badly as he beat the Empire...the Lizardmen absolutely CRUSHED the Skaven. I've been hooked ever sinse.
Now we run a club with lots of Fantasy games and tournaments...and we are still attracting some of the old 40k players who are slowly coming back. But with the current release of the new edition of 40k, we are mixing it up.
But now I play Fantasy...and I am sticking to it. And my army is the awesome Lizardmen. The Lustrian Stomp-Machine.
Huan-Gor - January 5, 2005 01:57 PM (GMT)
nice story, a great reason to start Lizardmen, glad you beat the furry fiends. welcome to the site Powerskink.
casual_moose - January 5, 2005 10:00 PM (GMT)
w00t! Way to beat those Skaven! Good job. If you still remember it enough you could make a battle report from it and put it up in the battle report forum, but thats if you remember it enough. ;)
Cool story though. Sounds cool. Weird how ther where only two Fantasy players, though. But I guess that that happens.
