Title: Ask Shandy And Lonepinekath
Description: Sit down & break out the Pringles n Coke

LonePineKath - April 24, 2006 06:50 PM (GMT)
It's the "Ask Shandy & LonePineKath" topic!

Whatever you need to know, we'll try and help... and you get two for the price of one! Bargain, eh? Think of it like a little quiet corner where you can relax and have a Coke (no Pepsi left, I'm afraid - Coke was on 3 for £3) and a few Pringles.
Hopefully between us we have it all covered, male/female, Northern/Southern Hempishere, beaches/forests - you name it! You get both perspectives.

So fire away!

*Kath tips out a handful of Pringles and sits back to wait*

My questions are...

Who do you think will be the first person to ask you a question?

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

You've got me thinking about coke and pepsi, so tell me what is the difference between the 2?

Why is it that a minute or two ago I was struggling to think of anything to ask and now I can't stop?

Was I supposed to ask this many questions at once or should they have come one at a time?

QUOTE

I think discokev, definitely. Possibly Flux, but discokev is probably most likely. Am I right?
QUOTE
What came first, the chicken or the egg?

From a pseudo science point of view this question can be answered quite easily. The egg came first because any female sex cell is called an egg.

If the egg is defined structurally as the hard shelled thing, and the chicken a feather covered animal, the answer is still simple. Evolutionary scientists believe the first hard shell egg was the amniotic egg laid around 300 million years ago, and was laid by the animal who was the link between amphibians and reptiles. One of the first dinosaurs that we know had feathers was the Archaeopteryx, and came much later. Modern birds would not arise until 150 million years ago, descending from theropod dinosaurs.

In this case, the first chicken must have been the mutated offspring of a proto-chicken that laid the egg containing the first true chicken.

The crux of the matter is how to biologically define 'a chicken'. What level of genetic similarity or structural similarity determine whether an organism is a chicken? One can only define what was the first chicken after the fact, thus any definition of the first chicken becomes arbitrary. The question 'which came first?' ignores the complicated reality of speciation.

According to the principles of speciation, neither the chicken nor the egg came first, because speciation does not occur in simple, obvious units. In fact, evolution is about a slow transition in an overall population. What qualifies as “chicken” (ignoring the many diverse modern types of chicken) involves a wide range of genetic traits (alleles) that are not encompassed in a single individual and continue to be modified from generation to generation.

The transition from non-chicken to chicken is a gray area in which several generations are involved, and therefore which includes many many chicken-and-egg events, with no one step representing the whole. Since the result of the process is an incomplete transition into various new characteristics rather than one single blueprint, a new species, "chicken", is only identified in hindsight when the species can be obviously identified as different from its ancestral stock.

The other perpective goes like this; A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is leaning against the headboard, smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face. The egg, looking a bit pissed off, grabs the sheet, rolls over and says; "Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question."

Well you did ask!

QUOTE
You've got me thinking about coke and pepsi, so tell me what is the difference between the 2?

Coke has a stronger, more enjoyable taste. Blindfolded I could easily identify which was which but having said that, I usually buy whichever is on the better offer at Asda :)
QUOTE
Why is it that a minute or two ago I was struggling to think of anything to ask and now I can't stop?

It's the caffeine in the Coke I fed you.
QUOTE
Was I supposed to ask this many questions at once or should they have come one at a time?

Ask away, ask away!

Why is it that babies are cute when their fat and when they turn like 10 they are the ugly kid that gets shunned upon in society?

Why is it whenever theres a "seating plan" in school, you always get stuck beside the person with the worst body odour? (I got stuck beside this one kid that stunk and he's like "is that you that stinks?" - I told him to F-off)

Why is it nobody has seen the movie "Office Space" even tho its been awarded some very prestegious awards?

Why is it english teachers hate rap music, even its just one big rhyming poem. (about Bitches and whores, but its still a poem!)

I'm done.

Here's a Coke, Roads. Pringle?

It's all down to evolution, IMO. Fat babies are considered cute because in caveman days it was desirable to have a fat baby so that it had enough stores to see it through babyhood. By the time you're ten, you're supposed to be in training to be a hunter/gatherer so society needs to see you as a lean, mean, fighting machine. We just never got over our ancestor's ideals, I think. That's how I see it, anyway. Was that a good answer or was it too deep?

Aah - I know this one! It's Murphy's Law! "Anything that can go wrong, will" or words to that effect. Some know it as "Sod's Law".

QUOTE (Roads)
Why is it nobody has seen the movie "Office Space" even tho its been awarded some very prestegious awards?
Good question. This is Shandy's field. He's the actor, so I'll leave that one for him. (Rough translation in the Kath to English dictionary = "I don't know")

QUOTE (Roads)

Do you think maybe it's the bitches and whores that are scaring them off? Shame really, because maybe if they embraced it as a way to getting students into poetry, they might really be onto something there.

Hope that helps! May I answer any more questions for anybody? :)

Which weighs more- a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks?
No. That's dumb.

Uh...

Shandy, what's your favorite place you've visited in the US?
You listened to any more TMBG songs lately?

Kath- what's the newest episode of House that you've seen?
Man. Can't think of any. Uh.. What was your favorite subject in school?

That's all I got now.

Shandy - April 25, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)
mmm, thanks for the coke, Kath :)

Feathers, because you wouldn't feel the bricks hit you, if you know what I mean.

Shandy, what's your favorite place you've visited in the US?

hmmmm, Santa Monica was beautiful. I swam with dolphins in the ocean.
Disneyland is wonderful, I went there with my girlfriend and her brother in October and I felt like a kid, it was fantastic.

QUOTE (flux capacitor....fluxing @ Apr 25 2006, 04:40 PM)

hmmm, Ana Ng of course and Don't Let's Start has really grown on me, I love it!

I have you to thank for such musical joy :)

Why is it i get so many phishing attacks in my email everyday?

why is it i'm typing with one hand instead of 2?

why does Shandy's name start with an "S"?

why am I so sore?

Anyone want to rub my back?

I'm sorry to tell you that I've only ever seen two epsiodes! I keep forgetting it's on! (I'm usually posting on here and before I know it an hour has gone by and whoops - I missed it again!)
QUOTE (Flux)

Ooh, Human Biology. I love it! I'm fascinated with how we work. My second choice would be English Literature. At first I hated it then all of a sudden, something clicked and I loved it! (I don't think I will ever get on with Shakespere though!!)
QUOTE (Flux)

I've been to America too, Flux, you know! Twice! ;)

Everybody loves Roads.
QUOTE (Roads)

Because your hands are running a relay race and they are very competitive.
QUOTE (Roads)

Because without the 'S', he'd just be Handy.

Madstunts - April 26, 2006 07:50 PM (GMT)
Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?

LonePineKath - April 26, 2006 08:14 PM (GMT)
^ You made me. Remember, you dropped me into that vat of chemicals. That wasn't easy to get over, and don't think that I didn't try.

flux capacitor....fluxing - April 26, 2006 09:18 PM (GMT)
Haha. You are very welcome, Shandy.

I like biology too. Kinda. That's what I'm taking htis year. We sarted dissecting thing a week or so ago. Huge bullfrogs, then a sheep's brain, then a starfish, then a sheep heart. Is very interesting.

Madstunts - April 30, 2006 03:15 AM (GMT)
^ We dissected stuff at school. You'd get home and find that someone had put lumps of sheep's lung in your bag. Ahh, nostalgia :)

Shandy> There used to be an Aussie show on TV here when I was younger. It was a really over-the-top comedy set in a hospital. There was blood and stuff and everyone was mad. Unfortunately I can't remember anything specific about it! I don't suppose you'd know what I'm talking about?

Shandy - May 3, 2006 01:07 AM (GMT)
^ YES!!

OMG!!! I Looooooooooooved that show. It was in the early 90's, wasn't it?

I wish I could remember the name, I've been trying to remember for years and years!!! It has never been repeated as far as I know.

I remember this one scene, where one of the nurses was wagging her finger at the staff, and she got into the lift, the doors closed and chopped off her arm, lol! I laughed so much at that.

Funny story- My mum caught me watching it, and told me I was only to watch it once a week. Lucky for me it was only on once a week! hahaha

Madstunts - May 9, 2006 10:21 PM (GMT)
Shandy> Another one for you...

Just how big were the Doug Anthony All-Stars in Oz? They were kinda almost celebs here for about a year, and then they just faded away.

I met them once in a takeaway. I said "Are you the Doug Anthony All-Stars?" and they said "Yes we are!", and I said "Oh". Then there was an awkward pause, and I left the shop.

Shandy - May 12, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
^ I've never heard of them.

But thats not to say they didn't reach Australia.

They are a band?

Madstunts - May 12, 2006 11:53 PM (GMT)
^ Erm, nope. They are/were an Aussie comedy trio! On TV in the UK in about 1992. They were definitely Australian!

Shandy - May 16, 2006 06:31 PM (GMT)
ah-ha! Just looked them up.

I know 2 of the guys out of it.

Tim Ferguson used to host a video clip show, where he would make funny comments. kinda like funniest home video show. He also did some work on Big Brother I think (as a reporter kinda)

And Paul McDermott hosted a show called 'Good news week'.
Where he and others would make fun of the events during the past week. It had a cool theme song.

Madstunts - May 17, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
Weirdly, they are the only 2 I remember! The other guy must have had no personality or something.
:)

LonePineKath - June 24, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
Shandy - How was Cedar Point? :)

flux capacitor....fluxing - June 25, 2006 12:08 AM (GMT)
Kath, how was Butlins? :D

Shandy, you guys picked the perfect day to go. It was so nice out.

Madstunts - June 25, 2006 05:58 PM (GMT)
Kath> Can this unnatural obsession with Butlins be cured?
:P

LonePineKath - June 25, 2006 06:09 PM (GMT)
Hmm, if anything it seems to be getting stronger with every visit. Maybe they put something in the Grolsch? (Well that's the only reason I can come up with as to why it's £3 a pint!!)

I had such a fantastic time there yet again. You don't realise how tense/stressed/tightly wound you are until you've spent a couple of days at Butlins. By Monday night I was soo wonderfully relaxed it was unreal! I felt mellow, man! Totally mellow!

My favourite thing at Butlins has got to be Splash Waterworld. Where else could you swim in rapids, lie on a beach, swim in a whirpool and then sit amongst the bubbles or a jacuzzi at the top of a giant fibreglass volcano and all for free?? Mint!
Here's a story about me on the first ever (proper) water slide of my life!!
http://www.butlinsmemories.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5899

I love the fairground too. It's quaintly old fashioned. The horses on the carousel go a bit fast though and make me dizzy! (Well I am a complete lightweight when it comes to rides! LOL!)

The entertainment in the evenings is corny but a good laugh. I saw a show called Hard Drive (as pictured in my sig) where acrobats do death-defying stunts high above a very solid floor! I also watched a show called 'One Big Night', which was great British fun. All tribute acts and variety. Just what you feel in the mood for when you're already mellow!

The beach was even good this year too! (That's two years running!) It wasn't freezing! A Skegness Summer Miracle!

Yes, I guess Butlins is firmly clasped in my heart. I love it! :D I nearly died when I got the quote for next year though (as we will be forced to go in August in 2007, rather than June). Luckily I have a year to save up!

Yes, Purplewear and I got lucky with the weather. It was great how Soak City was right next door when we got too hot on rollercoasters!

Actually, that's a lie! I was just wondering where the image from the caption competition page came from - to see if it was actually one of the Gallagher brothers. I didn't realise that it was in your photobucket!

That's me going down the slide, if you couldn't tell :)

LonePineKath - July 9, 2006 06:02 PM (GMT)

And how's this?

"Wow! Can you believe those waterslides?! Ooooh!"

There. It's a question now. :D

Do you like cake, Kath?

LonePineKath - July 11, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
^ Actually, I love cake. Maybe I need to steal Madstunts' signature when he's done with it! I actually have a reputation amongst my friends as a cake lover!
You should do that idea, Flux! That would be funny!

Good luck finding those!

Actually, there's a copy of Changi at my local library. As well as a script book that has my photo in it!

How many of you have made it into print ? :P

Oh, and I was in the Matrix 2, but I can't find myself.
