Title: Favorite Lesser-known 80's Movies?
Blind Spot - September 5, 2005 03:15 PM (GMT)
I have a tendency to like alot of "B" movies that most other people have never heard of (and if they have, they slag the heck out of 'em, hehe).
We used to rent movies alot when I was younger (quite fitting that I'd end up working at a video store!). I tended to gravitate towards more easygoing 80's movies, especially comedies.
Since that was roughly 1991-94, alot of those 80's movies were still kinda popular, or at least in print.
That's another reason why, even though I was born in 1981, I always considered the entire 80's (and even the late 70's) as my "heritage"--even if the movies were over a decade old, they were new to me. Unlike some kids, I didn't care about that - I only cared if I liked it. ;)
Plus, at age 9 to 12-13, I was still young enough to be "imprinted" by pop culture, even if I'd already liked alot of it before then.
Anyway, a few favorites:
-Great Outdoors
-Collision Course (Jay Leno's only starring role - a good one though!)
-UHF (Weird Al's movie, though it's become a cult classic now)
-My Favorite Martian
-Howard the Duck (bet you'll never guess why!)
-Sure Thing
-The Jerk
-Summer Rental
-Like Father Like Son
-Vice Versa
-Armed and Dangerous

UHF & Vice Versa are great films!
Other eighties lesser knowns I love are;
Adventures in Babysitting (It has Elisabeth Shue in it!)
Tremors (Does that count as a lesser known?)
Poison Ivy (A really cheap, made for TV movie starring Michael J Fox!)
Scrooged (A Christmas film featuring Bill Murray which seems to have been forgotten about!)
I bet there's many more out there! I'd love to hear what everyone else remembers fondly!
deloreancrazy - September 5, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
Scrooged is a great film, despite everyone giving it bad reviews!
My Science Project was alright, good beginning but it got lame and predictable (I only watched it for that long because I was amused that I had a friend who looked exactly like the girl in that film.)
Revenge of the Nerds! Apparently its being remade next year as well
The Evil Dead Does it count that in the UK it was only first released uncut in 2001 after being a video nasty for 20 years? Probably not... :P
My Stepmother is an Alien Only really watched because of the irony of Seth Green and Alyson Hannigan playing a couple almost a decade before Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Thats all I can really think of at the moment. I don't really think I managed to get "lesser known" films though did I? Curse me for being a film buff! lol.

^ Mmmm. Alyson Hannigan.
:)
^^Tremors is a great movie, and deserves inclusion even though it was released in the 90's :)
Blind Spot - September 6, 2005 12:31 AM (GMT)
^ There was still kind of a "late 80's" afterglow on pop culture as far as 1992, so I'll be generous and include anything up till then. ;)
Tremors was a great movie - though I haven't seen it in ages, so my memory is kinda faded now.

Oh! How embarrassing! You're right! 1990!
Ah but I did find thi bit of trivia;

So at least we know that the filming of Tremors began Summer 1989! LOL! So it's a movie shot in the eighties at least!

does anyone remember the movie shocker? i forget who stars in it. i liked that movie
Madstunts - September 6, 2005 08:55 PM (GMT)
^ This is slightly off topic, but if you're interested in Tremors trivia...
Tremors was actually filmed near a place called Lone Pine, California!
...and it was LonePineKath who mentioned the movie!
Spooky!

Bumpy bum
py
Tremors was on the telly last night (in the UK)!
I love that movie. I think I'm going to have to buy the DVD. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward make a great comedy partnership. Hmm. Wonder what happened to Fred Ward....

My sister loves the move Labyrinth! It's sort of like Wizard of Oz with David Bowie!
In fact, we like to share the "Remind me of the Babe" song:
Sis: You remind me of the babe.
Me: What babe?
Sis: The babe with the power.
Me: What power?
Sis: The power of voo-doo.
Me: Who do?
Sis: You do.
Me: Do what?
Sis: Remind of the babe!
... Good times! :D

The 80's was great for movies, and though the budgets weren't always high, lots of cool movies still got made.
My favorite lesser known/underrated 80s movies are:
The 'Burbs - Underrated masterpiece of comedy with Tom Hanks, which I can (and do) watch over and over...
UHF - Weird Al Yankovic at his best - just love the spoof adverts for "Spatula City" (We sell spatulas ... and that's all!) and "Plots R Us Mortuary Services" (Tired of sloppy funerals?). What's really ironic is that the ridiculous reality and game shows portrayed are almost becoming a reality these days...
Blind Date with Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger. Great slapstick romantic comedy.
Earth Girls are Easy - Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis in this off the wall, opposites attract movie. Sometimes you can be just in the mood for a movie like this.
The Quiet Earth - Unpredictable dark sci-fi from down under. Worth watching if you ponder what the universe is about. Bit depressing though...
White Nights - Cold war romantic/political tale, very watchable IMO!
The Thing - Chilling (literally) remake. If you like Sci-fi and scary sort of horror, this has both!!
King Of Comedy - Funny but disturbing tale of how desperate wannabes can become with Robert De Niro kidnapping Letterman-style host in order to "stand-in" for him. Great stuff.
Into The Night - night of bizarre events with Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Ffieffer. Haven't seen this for ages, doesn't appear on TV very often...
Dreamscape - The effects are a litttle dated now but this movie was great at the time. it revolves around going into peoples dreams and messing with them (or even killing them - using the "if you die in your dream you die in real life" theory) someone in Hollywood must remake this or make it a TV series. Great concept for a show.
To Live and Die in LA - Hard-hitting crime thriller with plot twists, shocks and surprises round every corner. One of my top 20 films!
I thought I'll just list a few movies, but they just kept coming to me, I do go on sometimes...

^ Please do Mr. Kath, I haven't seen any of those, except of course . . .

But I will have to keep an eye out for them thanks to your brilliant recommendations. After all, you were right about Paris being romantic!!
