Title: Disco Kev

LonePineKath - August 24, 2005 09:17 PM (GMT)
I'm very sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I've just this minute heard that discokev has been in a car accident :(

This was posted by his brother, Darren, in the chat section of another board we're both memembers of;
QUOTE
Hi everyone,

I thought I should come on here and let you all know that discokev (a.k.a my brother) was quite badly injured in a car accident today and is currently in the norfolk and norwich hospital. He'll mend but it will take him some time to be back up to full disco power.

Anyway, I thought I would let you know in case you wondered where he had gone as I'm sure he would be posting by now.

:(
As soon as I hear any more I will let you know or you can visit the site yourselves and read the latest. :(

The latest news;

QUOTE (Kev's Brother Darren)
He's very battered, but is slowly getting better. They operated on his arm and leg last night and he's rigged up to lots of machines to keep and eye on him. He's quite dozy, but I think he will be more with it after a good nights sleep.

More news;
QUOTE (discokev's brother Darren)
I went to see my brother last night and he had to have another operation on his leg yesterday to remove a lot of the swelling that had happened, he wasn't long back from that when I saw him and he was very sleepy and couldn't really talk because he had a tight mask on to help with his breathing. I was talking to him however and said I had a lot of get well messages for him.

I've just had a phone call from the consultant and he says that kev is a lot more awake today and his breathing is a lot stronger. I think its was just because he had the operation that he was struggling a bit last night. I haven't took any cards or forum printouts into him yet as he's not on a normal ward yet, but as soon as he is I'll take it all in for him.

Thanks again for all the messages, and I'll make sure I continue to keep you updated on his progress.

Shandy - August 30, 2005 01:46 AM (GMT)
Poor DiscoKev!!

I'm sending him all the 'staying alive' and 'you should be dancing' vibes I can muster

I Love Doc - August 31, 2005 02:11 AM (GMT)
get well soon kev!

Shandy - September 2, 2005 01:02 PM (GMT)
Kath, is it possible you could give Kev's bro, Darren, a link to this thread?

Just so Kev knows we are all thinking about him and wishing him all the best.

He was only here for a short time in the grand scheme of things, but he added so much to the board, in particular the games, that he is missed so much.

:(

I wish him a speedy recovery!

deloreancrazy - September 2, 2005 01:58 PM (GMT)
Wow, I'm really shocked reading this, I've not been here for a few days and I didn't see this thread until now! :o Poor Kev :(

Talking of accidents I had a near-miss the other day cycling to college, because some plonker left his white van parked on the path and I had to quickly dart across the road and dodge the oncoming traffic! :(

I really wish Discokev a speedy recovery and that we'll see him posting here again in no time :)

I hope everyone else on this board is safe and well at the moment too :)

Do let us know more when you hear it Kath

Good idea - job done :)

There's no more news atm. :(

discokevsbrother - September 3, 2005 11:43 AM (GMT)
Thank you all for all of your messages for kev, I will make sure he gets them all. He is doing really well at the moment and was very awake when I saw him last night.

I'll try and get on here if I can with updates, but if not I'm sure kath will keep you all updated.

Thanks
Darren (a.k.a disco kevs brother)

The latest on Kev from Butlinsmemories;

QUOTE (Darren on Butlins Memories)
Hi everyone,

----Before you read the following, know that kev is o.k now and safe and recovering well ----

Sorry for the delay in the update, but it has been a really hard couple of days for me and my family and especially kev. Kevin was very lucky to survive the accident last week and he suffered major shock to his vital organs which has took several days to return to being stable, he also broke his right arm in 4 places and shattered the top bone in his right leg and cut through a lot of the muscle in his right leg.

Initially they thought his leg would recover, after an operation to patch the bone up, an operation to relieve the pressure due to massive swelling in the leg and an operation to remove a small amount of dead muscle in the top half of his leg things still looked good. On the fourth operation they found that at least 3 quarters of the muscle in the top half of his leg was dead and this combined with the shattered bone meant there was only one course of action.

This morning the consultant gently explained to him what needed to happen and he took it really well and accepted that unless his right leg was amputated he could become much worse. He was tacking it really well and we were all really impressed with how brave he was.

At about 2 O'Clock today he went into theatre, he sufferred a lot of blood loss in the operation, but finally at just after 9 we was able to go and see him in the high dependancy unit, he was very pale and shivering due to the blood loss, but he has done so well and been so brave, and he will still be the same old kev that he has always been.

Its the start of a long road for him, but I'm sure he will be fine. He will need more operations and it will take a lot of getting used to, but people can do remarkable things and I'm sure he will too.

This morning he requested that I told everyone on here and I know he's very keen to get back on here.

Take care everyone
Darren

Madstunts - September 3, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
Oh my god! That's terrible, but at the same time, it's good to know that Kev is is reasonably good spirits.

We take so much stuff for granted.
It just brings home how fragile we all are.

:)

flux capacitor....fluxing - September 3, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
Oh, man. That's not good. I hope Kev comes through all this really well.

Shandy - September 3, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
speechless :(

But I'm just so happy Kev is alive. That's the most important thing of all!

Thanks for the updates Darren and Kath.

No Roads... - September 3, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
Oh my god!
I can't believe this... thats horrible.

Good spirit can get you thru alot of stuff, and good to see your maintaining it.

deloreancrazy - September 4, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
I hope Kev's recovering well and will back on his feet and posting with us soon :)

I'm afraid I was wrong the other day about near misses, I can be put on the accident list now, just got back from the hospital cause I sliced the back of my head open accidentally :(

Luckily I'm alright now though, I just feel really stupid *sighs*

^Took the words right out of mouth. Which would be impolite in other cases but I'll let in pass.

I have been thinking over the right thing to say for the past few days because I am bad in this area but then I realized Kevin wouldn't care and he would just want our support, so here's a little something.

Disco Kev I hope you feel better man and you can go back to being a heathly disco dancer. :D My prayers are with you!

deloreancrazy, you're making me crazy! Don't go hurting yourself now. I hope everything works for you too now. :)

The latest news from butlinsmemories;
QUOTE (Darren)
Hi everyone,
kev is really doing amazingly well, I saw him again today and his attitude towards everything that has happened is inspirational. He was sitting up a lot straighter in bed and his arm is healing really well. He is keen to get out again and be mobile.

Anyway, he wanted to express his thanks for all of the messages and cards people have sent, he really appreciates them all and is very greatful.

Shandy - September 7, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
Thanks again Kath

I see from the BM board that Kev is back to posting.

I hope he comes back here soon too. I miss him :)

LonePineKath - September 8, 2005 06:06 PM (GMT)
Me too!

However, I know that he is still in hospital so internet access is slow and of course, typing is still a long process for him but it is just great to see he's doing better and better with each day that passes and I know that when he is able to return to full posting, he will get a very warm welcome here. He has been very missed. :)

LonePineKath - September 16, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
Typing is a slow process for discokev atm with his arm still mending so he's just posting on one or two topics on the butlinsmemories site atm, so I'm sure he won't mind if I continue to spread the good news that he's doing so well and getting stronger day by day;
QUOTE (Butlins Memories Forum)
hi all,

well ive learnt today that i will be moving tomorrow to the old west norwich hospital, they specialise in amputations so should be good for me. just a little bit daunting cause i feel so settled here and dunno what to expect, its an older building so possibly not so nice but it must be a step in the right direction and im sure the staff will be great as everyone ive encountered so far has.

im getting good at transferring myself between bed, chair and wheel chair, still a bit slow speed wise on the wheel chair but once my arms mended i can ditch it for crutches! ive actually used my ensuite bathroom today, managed to use the toilet and sink all fine including moving between them and the shower with some help.

It's great to see how well Kev's handling all this and his awesome attidude.

Shandy - September 17, 2005 07:24 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I too am happy to hear that he is still in good spirits. Life goes on, and so will DiscoKev :) Thankgod

deloreancrazy - September 17, 2005 09:02 PM (GMT)
Great to hear he's doing fine and making great progress :)

I'm still concerned, he's like my Member Brother! (I'm 287 and Kev's 288) lol

LonePineKath - September 18, 2005 09:36 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Darren)
As kev said he has now moved to the norwich community hospital, which is a more old-fashioned style of hospital, especially compared to the very new norfolk and norwich hospital.

(A quick google search reveals the new hospital was built in 2001, whereas the original part of the norwich community hospital was built in 1859 as a workhouse, this part was demolished after bombing in the war, but its still an old hospital! - history lesson over!)

However it is the best place for him to be as they can spend a lot more time with him and specialise in physio and rehab.

Kev says he was emotional when everyone said goodbye to him before he moved hospitals... he cant post much, but I'll keep you all updated.

The nurses in the hospital have a lot of time to spend with thier patients and yesterday one of the nurses took us down to the gym and showed us the equipment he will be using and told him all about what will happen. The physios will also show him how to get in and out of a car and once they have done that then I can pick him up and take hime to the pub or cinema or anywhere he wants to go (but the nurse said he cant go clubbing yet!)

He is really looking forward to physio and cant wait to get out again. I think that is all I have to report, but the short story is he's doing well!

^ That's the latest. :)

More Discokev news :)
He's been browsing this forum but he just can't post due to some technical trouble with his mobile phone's internet connection. He asked me to tell everyone that he will be home Tuesday & will be able to post there - yay!

Shandy - September 25, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
^ YAY :D

As we all know, the board hasn't been the same without him. I'm looking forward to his return

discokev - September 27, 2005 07:41 PM (GMT)
Hello everyone!!!

Finally I am browsing on a proper computer with a proper keyboard as opposed to trying to type a message on a mobile phone only to discover it can't post it!!

Anyway, a big thank you to everyone on here, I have already read through the thread and been very flattered by the response from people on a forum which I have only been a member of for a very short time. Special thanks for Kath for keeping everyone updated in the first place and to the people involved in getting the George Mcfly photos to me, very much appreciated.

Well, I'm doing ok now, the hospital staff have all been great to me and I have alot of them to thank for getting me to this stage aswell as the support of many friends and family. The physio has been working me hard for the last week and I have many more exercises to do each day and am visiting the physio again next Wednesday. I went to see my consultant last Friday, they took the stitches out of my stump and say it should be healed in a couple of weeks. I need to go back to see him in another couple of weeks and get my arm x-rayed in the hope that I will be able to put weight on it. The physios will then want me to build it up so I'm able to use crutches. They say it should be another couple of months till I'm able to sort my false leg. So everything seems to be going well, the only trouble is that I'm getting alot of phantom limb pains and if anyone knows anything about them then I would love some advice!

Anyway, get back to posting properly soon!

Kev

Fantastic to have you back! user posted image

PS There's a little surprise coming in the post for you in 2 days! (I'm not telling though so don't make me - and no, it's not as exciting as the other thing you got sent - this is just bog standard I'm afraid! )

Madstunts - September 27, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
Oliver Sacks talks about phantom limbs in his book, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" (Chapter 6 - "Phantoms"). All his books are really interesting, and this one is no exception.

Apparently phantom limbs are necessary if one is to be able to use a prosthetic limb.

The postscript of the chapter deals with "phantom pain". Apparently it's quite common. Often it is a continuation of pain which existed before the limb was removed - eg. an ingrowing toenail. He says "Such problems, not at all uncommon, are in no sense 'imaginary', and may indeed be investigated by neurophysiological means." He then goes on to quote a few case histories.

Also, the Wikipedia entry on phantom limbs deals with phantom pain...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_limb

Dunno if this is any help. I'm sure a Google search should provide lots of hits. :)

Good to see you back
*manly handshake*
:D

Shandy - September 28, 2005 11:41 AM (GMT)
Welcome back, Kev !! :D :88: B)

I'm so happy to hear first hand that everything is going alright and you seem to be making great progress.

It's excellent to see you back here :)

discokev - September 28, 2005 09:04 PM (GMT)
Thanks everyone for the welcomes, I am slowly getting the hang of talking to my limb mentally so hopefully I will get these pains sorted! They sent round the district nurse this morning to change my dressing and she was accompanied by a very attractive student nurse!! This afternoon I have been into work to see everybody and to hand in my sick note!!!

Also, forgot to add that people from one office at work got me a portable DVD player for when I was in hospital, I was too tired to watch much on it but the three films which did get a play were ofcourse back to the future 1,2 & 3!!
