Good list, (if you are a girl ;) )
I loved the choose your own adventures series-
http://www.gamebooks.org/cyoalist.htmMy favs-

And when I was younger, I loved the sesame street library volumes-

And yes, I was a bit of a geek, because I loved-
The Arthur Mee Children's Encyclopedia-
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~ozideas/arthurmee.htmAnd Hardy Boys. I loved the Hardy Boys.
Ohhh!! And there was this book with a soccer game against vampires and mosters. I can't remember the name of it but it was really really cool.
Does anyone know what it was?
On the cover was a picture of the girl and her team, facing Dracula and other monsters on the other side.

I actually don't remember too many offhand, but it was mostly short stories with alot of pictures - we've still got 'em in the garage somewhere, I'll go take a look when I can.
I know one of 'em was called "Caps for Sale" - about this guy who peddled caps all through town trying to sell 'em. I think he got like 16 on his head at one point, LOL!
There was this other one where some guy had to get 10 miles back home, and every mile he went, something went wrong. First his car ran out of gas, then he walked, rode a bus, etc. I liked that one! ;)

Read those books along with some others. I think the book that you're looking for is Rainbow Fish.
I own these books:
88 Steps to September
Flight #116 is down
Harriet the Spy
Help! I'm trapped in my sister's body
Double Trouble
Sleepover Friends
Just Between Us
Attaboy, Sam!
Everyone Else's Parents Said Yes
Others that I've read:
When The Phone Rang
There's a Girl in My Hammerlock.

Excellent topic, I love Doc!
Wow! "Choose Your Own Adventure" books! I used to love reading those! I'd forgotton all about them!
I also loved Babysitter Club Books & Judy Blume books, Watership Down, Famous Five, The Faraway Tree series, the Narnia books & Charotte's Web.
Shandy! I cannot believe you've heard of the Arthur Mee Children's Encyclopoedias! I have the full set! He was actually born very near to where I live! (A 5 minute car ride away). Wow!
Shandy - May 23, 2005 08:52 PM (GMT)
^ Excellent!! I'm sitting next to my set right now. They used to be my Mum's when she grew up. They are dark red covered with gold writting on the sides.
I love them so much, so many cool stories. They have the history of the world and all of man's knowledge in them, but told with pictures! lol.
At least it was up to date in the 1950's. I think they've prooved the world is round since then ;)
EDIT: Here it is, with my Marty Jr hat-

You liked choose your own adventure books too? Great!
Other books I used to read-
The one about the engine that thought he couldn't make it up the hill, so he said, 'I think i can, I think i can, i think i can . . ."
'The Monster at the End of the Book' Very scary, but it turns out to be quite funny.
'Rowan of Rin'
'Tale of a forth grade Nothing'
'2 weeks with the Queen'
'The B.F.G'

I read lots of different books when I was younger but the one that stuck out the most, was the secret diary of Adrian Mole
LonePineKath - May 25, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
^ I've read that too!
I also like The BFG & Tale of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
Shandy: Yep - those encyclopoedias are excactly the same as the ones that used to belong to my mum & are now mine! The info is sooo out of date (like half a century!) but I love looking though them! My favourite page is the one with The Raven poem by Edgar Allen Poe! Nice & Scary!
Do you think we were separated at birth & your're my long lost twin?! LOL! This is getting spooky!
Edit Okay, so actually maybe not separated at birth since that would mean the longest labour in the history of the planet! Ha ha.
Shandy - May 25, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
^ We keep getting more and more things in common, don't we.
We are kindred spirits :)
OMG!! The Raven was one of my favorite stories in there too-

I also loved Ali baba and the Forty theives-

and I loved the 'Wonder' section that told you eveything about the life, the universe and everything! -

And who could forget the great warning about Alcohol 'The Enemy of Life' LOL!!

The thing I love most about these books is the fact that they are out of date. They portray beliefs and morals from the simple, happy good old days. I wish our world was more like the one it describes. The illustrations aren't bad either! And I love the stories with twists!!
LonePineKath - August 9, 2005 01:34 AM (GMT)
^ I agree 100% - these books are wonderful!
They have such an air of innocence about them! :)
I grew up on those encyclopoedias and I'm sure it shaped my brain into the strange individual I am today - up at 2:30am on the internet! LOL!
Arthur Mee would be proud!

I'm a geek as well.
I read "Inside The Atom" when I was seven!
And talking of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, when the original BTTF was released, you could get (free in boxes of "Shreddies" breakfast cereal) choose your own adventure books based on BTTF! The books were only very short (maybe 10 pages) and were probably a bit rubbish, but these are what got me excited about BTTF before I'd even seen it!

does anyone remember the name of the book about these kids in a school but instead of the classrooms being built next to each other they were built on top of one another?

Ooh! Yeeah! I do. I think...Um...something or other's Falling Down. Ah, Jeez. I listened to that book on tape once. What was it?? Can't remember.
deloreancrazy - August 28, 2005 02:59 AM (GMT)
Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, which I read when I was Eight (*Avoids stares* What? I was a smart cracker back then)
I actually was gobsmacked when I watched Part III later on and discovered they were both Doc's favourite books lol. :o
Actually I have a rule never to damage or ruin a book but in the case of 20,000 Leagues my copy is very battered because I've read is so many times over the years.
Goodnight Mr Tom was a great book I remember reading (equally so was the tv movie with John Thaw) and I really enjoyed reading Kristen's Partners in Time novels.

Wayside School had my heart as a kid. Some good silly kids books. I also really liked Goosebumps. Still have a box full of them. And I was into Boxcar Children as well.
LMFAO at Kath and Shandy being kindred spirits!

Think you need to have a bit more in common than superficial interests for that!
