Title: What Is Your Favorite Bttf Fanfic And Why?
Description: Posted January 3, 2003.
Blind Spot - May 10, 2005 10:01 AM (GMT)
[NOTE: This topic was originally closed due to a side discussion on Slash undertones in certain fics. I've cut this totally out while doing my best to preserve as much of the original topic as possible.]
FUTURE GIRL:
All right, I know I should really be working on the-story-that-keeps-going (aka "No Place Like Home") right now, not waste time by messing around on the message board, but.... I thought I'd give this a try and hope, maybe, more than 5 people respond.
What is your favorite piece of BTTF fanfic that you have read, and WHY?
(The only rule... if you write any, you can't cite anything you wrote yourself. Being the author of something isn't like being an audience member, etc.)
Mine kind of tie together in clumps, I suppose. I really enjoyed Mary Jean Holmes' "Running Out of Time," and "Til Death Do Us Part." I think I like it that a) Marty figures in them fairly prominantly and B) there are alternate realities to be visited. "Til Death..." also marks the first "new" story of Mary Jean's that I read after she started writing again, a few years after I had first read her stuff for the first time, so it holds a happy place in my memory.
I think I really dig her "Past Imperfect," too, because I really like time travel stories that take place in the past, and that one really nails it. Not only historically accurate (well, as much as a piece of BTTF fiction can be... since the films seem to tweak some of the stereotypes, etc, people have with a time period) but it also involves all the Browns and McFlys. That was also the very first story of hers that I read, when I was 18, and it totally blew me away.... After years of craving further stories with these characters, it was like dying and going to heaven! I literally couldn't sleep that first night reading it because I was so wanting to know what happened next, etc. School those days was a complete and total waste of time for me, heh heh....

HOT FOR DOC:
Well, I like practically every bit of BTTF fan fiction that I read, so choosing a favorite is tough. But I decided on this story, which I found on FanFiction.net. It's called "Future Boy" and it's written by an author called Pisces. I love it because it highlights the absolutely wonderful relationship between Marty and Doc. It's wonderfully written, too.
Click Here to read "Future Boy"
To tell the truth, although I like time-travel stories, I prefer stories that show off how much Marty and Doc like each other.
DOC LATHROP BROWN:
Ah, this is a tough question.....
I, too, think Future Boy is a masterpiece. It aims for the heart, and hits it directly. It's the way that the relationship between Scientist and Teen should always be expressed.
I also quite enjoy Willum's masterpiece Back to the Past which is, essentially, an excellent, script-worthy idea for BTTF IV. It involves Doc visiting Marty on his 30-some-year old birthday, in the Time Train, to fix an imminent Paradox caused by all versions of Tannen. An interesting thing is that Willum had the guts to have the DeLorean be on the Tannens' side, insted of going back to the Dynamic Duo. I was skeptical at first, but he pulled it off well. Also welcome is Doc's use of "Time Bombs", which freeze everything but Doc and Marty, for 30 seconds. It's an exciting adventure story.

15th Surprise, by Hot_For_Doc, is another favorite heartwarming story of mine. I found the Silvestri track; "Marty's Letter" playing in my head, because the story and the song go so well together. It tells the reason why Doc has a giant amp at his place. (A question we've all wanted an answer to, I think.) The story provides a very believeable explaination. It will melt your heart.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1015413
Ectodude's Running Out of Time, a crossover with the short-lived animated series Extreme Ghostbusters is a wild romp through time, when the EGB's are sent the rebuilt DeLorean Time Machine, for testing, by the Government, who rebulit it from the parts leftover on the railroad tracks. Two of the EGB's test it, and deal with many mishaps, and damaged circuitry, eventually finding help from Marty and Doc. An exciting story, that's got as many laughs as it does Temporal Displacements! It's a great read.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=877531
Wild Gunman's (Where is that kid?) I'll Be Back, a crossover with The Terminator, sees Doc and Marty fleeing from a Terminator out to get Doc, which looks exactly like him! Luckily, Doc and Marty are sent help by the resistance: another Terminator. It's got alot of edge-of-your seat action, and one of the best crossover's I've ever read.
Link:http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=551352
Too Much Fried Food, by Teto, while unfinished, proved to be a cool read. The story is a personal narrative, about a guy who wished, on his birthday cake, for a more interesting life. Nothing occured, until the guy saw a stepvan drive by. A stepvan marked with the words: Emmett Brown Enterprises, 24 hour scientific service. Unfortunately, the story ended before the guy got help from Doc and Marty. His meeting with Marty does prove to be very funny, though.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=350000
Once again, a story by Wild Gunman, entitled Cut Scenes From the Back to the Future Trilogy, proved itself to be a good story. The story detailed some real scenes, and a few made-up cut scenes, including conversations that didn't happen, and a showdown between a writer and a Scientist. (Shameless Plug) A very funny read.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=667275
J-Flux's Whose Time-Line is it Anyway? is a very funny parody of, you guessed it, ABC's Whose Line is it Anyway? It's got some very funny stuff. Very well written, and definitely a favorite.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=357815
--And now, the real good stuff--
Future Girl's Return to the Past is another favorite of mine. I love the way it starts out. It's a rousing and interesting story, full of twists and turns, and a really good premise. Besides, it is interesting to find out what happened in the small town of Hill Valley, after the great crash into the Eastwood Ravine.
Link: http://www.kristensheley.com/bttf/return.html
Another one of Future Girl's stories, The Future Ain't What it Used to Be, was one I absolutely hated. I couldn't believe that she had had the gaul to destroy our beloved DeLorean. After repeated readings, however, I lightened up, and realized that this makes the story that much interesting. This story is a real joy to read, as it handles the construction of a new Time Vehicle, and we're there to witness it. I also like the scenario between Doc and his kids. The glance at the DeLorean's remians, by Marty, was sad enough to actually make me cry. No other story has done that. The fearful moment when the DeLorean actually goes down had me both in suspense, and in pain, as I almost felt what the car was going through. Very good stuff. And while I personally wouldn't have picked an Aerovette to replace the DeLorean, I now think that it will become a worthy successor to that beautiful silver wonder we all grew to love.

In Flux, another brilliant story by the amazing Future Girl, askes the question: "What would it be like in Hill Valley if our Dynamic Duo never met?" This story answers that question, with a vengeance. One of her best, Future Girl pulls off an amazing story, involving a scary alternate universe, and it stars some usually overlooked characters: Jules and Verne. It had me glued, wondering what was going to happen next. If this story was any indication, No Place Like Home should be 10 times as good!
Link: http://www.kristensheley.com/bttf/influx.html
Here's my most favorite peice ever....
The Pair O' Docs, by Future Girl, is a gripping, suspenseful, and often quite fearful journey though time, involving a alternate universe's Doc Brown, kidnapping Doc's Family, and the Time Train. It's heavy in the Action/Adventure department, which can only be a good thing. It's got you hooked until the end. Doc and Marty are in top form, and the story takes quite a turn when the Dynamic Duo seek refuge in the future of a familier, yet different world. Doc B is up-to-par with Hannibal Lector, being someone you can be scared of, and hate, while having good feelings for them. Future Girl chose well when she chose which Back to the Future character to be evil. It's hard to hate the Alternate Doc, but he does so much stuff that it's hard not to hate him. The fic has a very dark ambiance, plus, it's worthy of being BTTF IV. I'm not kidding. read it and try and tell me different. Heck, I'm willing to bet that this is the kind of script that Christopher Lloyd would have dreamed about for BTTF II. Even after the Climax is finished, the Falling Action is of interest enough to keep you hooked. This is BTTF Fan Fiction at it's best. Heck, I even know a few books that don't come close, in my eyes. Jurassic Park is one..... All in all, an excellent read, and you're cheating yourself if you don't read it.
Link: http://www.kristensheley.com/bttf/paradocs.html
...So, those are my favorites. I read too much.
J-FLUX:
Well, I figure I should put in my own opinion. I really like (almost) all of Future Girl's stories, as well as Hot_for_Doc's Vampire Doc series and Doc Lathrop Brown's Lost in Time series. I also enjoyed Wild Gunman's "Cut scenes from the BTTF trilogy," given the fact that WG put me in there (I only have one line, but who cares?). And I'm also a fan of Ectodude's "Running out of time" (We worked almost in sync with both our Ghostbusters/BTTF stories).
DOC LATHROP BROWN:
Notice that only the BTTF Writers are responding in this thread. Hmmm.... I suppose that we must be the only one's who care.... We're a tight little group.
MY OTHER SELF:
Want a non-writer's opinion, eh?
I have to admit, though, I'm going to stray from "favorite" fanfic (since it is pretty hard to choose, and I've only read stuff from a few authors), and focus on a few "stand out" fanfics instead--stories that I read that stood out to me for one reason or another.
Until the End of Time by Mary Jean Holmes is very different than her other stories. I know she has a set chronology to her stories, but I skipped over all of her other ones to read this one because she described it in the sysopsis as being very serious and dark--something you don't normally associate with Back to the Future (well, except for the second movie). I liked the dark, twisted plot because it was a nice change of pace after having read a few happier, stuck-in-[insert time period here]-and-there's-some-kind-of-problem-with-the-time-machine-type stories from other BTTF fanfic authors; not that there's anything wrong with those kind of stories.
Kristen Sheley's Future Shock stands out to me because it was the only adventure into the future she had written at the time I read it (since then, she's written The Future Ain't What it Used to Be). She gives a great depiction of what the future would be like in 2017. The cool part was that some of it was based off what we see in 2015 in BTTF II, but she also touches on some things that the movie obvioulsy over-predicted, under-predicted, or didn't even predict at all.
Of course, what list "stand out" fanfic would be complete without mentioning When Worlds Collide, in which Mary Jean and Kristen's separate, yet sometimes eerily similar BTTF universes come together. It just seems like a totally ingenious idea, and very impressive considering that the collaborative effort took place by e-mail and online chatting! Aside from that, it was interesting to see their characters interact and learn from their counterparts.
DELOREANCRAZY:
Another writers opinion;
I like Mary Jean Holmes' OUTATIME the BTTF/ QL crossover, and I'm suprised no-one mentioned it so far. Its a brilliant story, and the sequel, No Time like the Present is even better.
Kristen's The Future ain't what it used to be is my favourite of her BTTF stories.
TEKVA:
I've tried answering this and find I can't! There are just too many good ones out there. I'm going to throw up my hands in despair and cite "Past Imperfect" by MJ, as my favorite. It is so beautifully crafted, and the characters are so utterly perfect -- at times I forgot I was reading, I just fell right into the story and became a participant. We even got a Doc death scene without melodramatics! Only MJ could pull that off! The scene that really stands out to me, for some reason, is Doc's ancestor playing with Emily's little computer game and being completely mystified and frightened by the thing! Great scene! Just a perfect, perfect story.

I also enjoyed many of the stories Doc Lathrop named. I like his "Lost in Time" Series too, the 'oink attack' in the first was hilarious! And I can count on Jay's stories for a good laugh.
CHRISTINA:
Hmm..oh boy, I'm gonna have to give this topic some more thought in order to narrow down my list for faves as well as factor in the newest and latest fiction such as Tevka's work, etc..Be back with an answer...

Of course, it looks like most people kind of cited more than one thing. (Including me!) So no one would shoot you in the back if you did that.

Now I'm blushing! Actually, looking back, it seems a bit too far out of character for the Dynamic Duo, but I don't think I'll edit my other stories until I get done with The Man Without a Friend, which is my last planned story. In fact, I'm unhappy with alot of my writing. sometimes, I go nuts, and forget about detail, then, the chapter or story seems rushed, and as if it was written by a five year old, not by someone who got the highest score on the District Writing Exam! (Once again, a shameless Plug.) Another problem is that I have too many stories going on at once. Right now, I have yet to start Reality: Shattered, and I'm writing a Batman story, a Metroid story, and a Power Rangers story. It's sheer madness. Usually, I write whatever i'm in the mood to write. If I watch an episode of Power Rangers, I'm on a Power Rangers rush. Play a Metroid game... etc....
I need help. I'm not very organized. But then, Doc wasn't exactly organized, either, so this may or may not be a bad thing....
DELOREANCRAZY:
I sympathise. I have six or seven BTTF stories I'm writing. Only problem is a glitch in my computer. I'm having to re-write Chapter One and Two again of one of them. And this is the first of the bttf stories and sets the following tales up. I figure the faster I write it, the faster I write more.
BTTFCHICK:
It's REALLY hard to choose from a bunch of great work, but if I absolutely HAD to pick the best of the best, I'd say it's a tie between Mary Jean Holmes' "Past Imperfect" and Kristen Sheley's "The Pair O' Docs". I love both of these stories for a lot of the same reasons I love the movies: they both have smart, intricate plots, they both represent a cluster of genres, they're both VERY entertaining, and the characterizations are just so dead on -- if I didn't know better, I'd have thought Bob Gale and Bob Zemeckis wrote these themselves! The stories are just so tight and well thought-out, they're honestly two of the best tales I've ever read, period. The fact that they revolve around my favorite characters is just a big added bonus!

Yet you still managed to knock out a long post here with summaries/synop/reviews for a number of stories.... Rather impressive and surprising.

GIGGLES:
Wondering where I was? ^^
Oh, dear...this is hard, SO hard to decide...
Well, let's just open up my Back to the Future folder in my Favorites and see what I have bookmarked.....
I, too, like 15th Surprise, as well as A Clothes Encounter and Meeting Marty, all by Hot_for_Doc (I think you should've had Marty show Doc that other picture Jennifer snapped. I think you know which one I'm talking about ). I'm a sucker for "sappy" stories (which I don't consider sappy). Fanfiction.net Link. And I'm adding Ich liebe Sie to that list, too, because it made me cry, and that's a good thing.
I also enjoyed Future Boy (don't worry, I'll get to at least one no one's mentioned yet ^^). Fanfiction.net story link.
What's next? Well, since Kristen's site is second in my Favorites folder (the message boards are first)...I'll just list them. Don't get me wrong, I love them all, but some just stand out in my mind.
The Curse of Great One, Trouble on the Trail, The Summer of '69 (love the song of the same name, too), The Pair O' Docs, Partners in Time?, Detour to the Past (and I LOVE Van Halen's "Dreams"), For All Time, In Flux, and In Due Time. BTTF fanfic link.
Now, for Mary Jean. Again, I love them all, but these are those that stand out in my mind (and keep me up 'til 3am reading).
Twice in a Lifetime, OUTATIME, 'Til Death Do Us Part (just re-read that one recently), At Very First Sight, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Back to Neverland, Running Out of Time, No Time Like the Present, Until the End of Time, and Losing Time. BTTF fanfic link.
And, of course, When World's Collide.

Well, when I'm not writing stuff that totally drains me of my creativity, I also like to write articles and reviews, and, heck, even erroneus rants, stories, and scientific nonsense. I actually stayed up till 4 AM constructing and finalizing my theroy of the DeLorean's inner-workings. Afterwords, I was so creativly drained that I couldn't even write an E-Mail. Of course, sleep was seriously needed, as when I wrote it, I hadn't slept more the 3 and a half hours in the past 4 nights. What did I do with all of that up-time? Write, play, joke-around, and try to break out of a writer's block. This occured during this last summer, when I was desperatly trying to salvage up enough brain-power to blast past my block and finish Knight Time. The finalized DeLorean theory wasn't found until November, when I found it searching through old computer files. I finally got geocities to work, and I posted it on my site. It's something that I'm truly proud of, after finally working out all of the holes I had found in it. It's my most favorite peice of fiction that I've wrote. And it's only 2 pages long!
Anyway, this goes to show that the life of a writer is never truly relaxed. Now, let's get back on topic, to some degree.....

The Ship of Dreams, No Place like home (Chapter One that is. When is the rest going to be finished?) and In Flux

Soon.... I'm probably about two chapters from the end now, and after I reread the whole thing and add/modify a couple things on my list already, and my editor looks it over... then it will all be up. Hopefully in February 2003. Be forewarned, tho; it's gonna be long. It's over 150,000 words now, and I guesstimate the grand total will probably be between 160,000 - 165,000. Gulp.

Long is good. I like long stories.
TEKVA:
AH! The Ship of Dreams.
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! WOW, now THAT's an incredible story!!
LORRAINEBAINES55:
The Ship of Dreams is my favorite! That was a really, really good story! I've read it over and over!
~Kellie Lorraine~
SCFARRIS:
I know it's not much, but I do like all of Kristen's and Mary Jean's story's. What can I say but they are all very well written and throughly thought out. I can't help but see them as if they were on the silver screen. And I am in the progress of reading the works of the other author's mentioned here. Keep up the good work all of you. And Kristen looking forward to reading the completed story soon. But don't rush it on our account, make sure it is up to your wonderfuly wonderful style.

The Longer, the better, I say!
FEMALEDOC:
MJH's UNTIL THE END OF TIME was nothing short of remarkable. It had me emotionally charged, and it appeared in my dreams. The only other reading that's ever done that to me are the books in the HARRY POTTER series. I don't know what word to use to describe UNTIL THE END OF TIME except "beautiful." That would be worthy of Part IV. Best fanfic I've ever read, and one of the best overall stories I've read anywhere. Period. It's a shame MJH can't make a deal with Universal to have her work published.
TEKVA:
You know, Kristen and MJ's works have given me little reason to yearn for a 4th sequel. As far as I'm concerned, they've already given us the best sequels possible. I'm perfectly satisifed.

I can say the same about yours, Tekva!!!
I still haven't had chance to read any other peoples work yet for a couple of reasons - but I'm really looking forward to it!

Thanks so much! But WAIT till you read MJ and Kristen. My stuff is amateur night compared to what they do.

Hey, I think your stuff should be thrown in there, too! It's nice that you're writing fresh stuff again after so many years.... And to think, five years ago, I felt so alone, like I was the only one knocking these stories out....
-Kristen
CHRISTINA:
I completely agree with Kristen. In my opinion, Mary Jean (Watson), Kristen (Future Girl), and Nora (Tekva) put out the best "Back to the Future" fic out there...well, at leas my faves. There's also a lot of new writers out there who have the talent and potential to write some great stories and those are fun to read too. But as far as having the characters nailed and original stories to tell, you're doing great Tekva!
Christina
TEKVA:
Blushing gratefully. Thank you!

Kristen, that's how I felt way back in the beginning. I remember sitting with MJ at a table at Media West trying to analyze why no one was interested in the series. That was one reason I stopped writing -- I enjoyed writing for myself (always have), but it's certainly more fun when you can share it with others. When I finally took another peek at how the fandom was doing (after so many years), I was floored. So, I understand what you mean about feeling "lonely" out there!
DELOREANCRAZY:
Time of life by Tekva, just finished reading it, brilliant.
TEKVA:
Thank you so much!
It's now reformatted on the site, so it's easier to read. I saw where syntax could be tweaked here and there, but I'll do that over time.
Thanks, all...very much!

Tremors in Time by Kristen, I cringe every time I mentally picture Doc seeing his alternate version half decomposed.

There are just too many to choose from:
No Place By Home by Kristen Sheley: Love how Marty and Doc hop through various dimensions. My favourites are the ones where Marty becomes a seedy rock star, which is basically an extenstion of the very first draft (which she did a novelization of) - and one where Doc and Marty end up in the "real world", and are mistaken for their actor counterparts. While it was never explicitly stated, it seems to be implied that Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd don't exist in her BTTF Universe.
When Worlds Collide by Kristen Sheley and Mary-Jean Holmes: Another great alternate reality story. In this one, you cross over two different interpretations of the BTTF Universe from two different writers.
Real World By Anakin McFly: This is the mega-crossover that crosses over four fictional universes and the real world. In fact, she was even the one who helped inspire me to write my own multi-universe stories.
They've Got Mail by Anakin McFly: The story that was the basis to Real World. I get a kick out of reading all the emails addressed to one another, and I regret that I missed out on all the fun. I guess the prose counterpart, Real World, is the official take on what happens in her (multi)universe.
Boy Genius by Flaming Trails: This is a very interesting take on the BTTF characters in a different universe, and Marty and Emmett are the same age.
Father Time by Aaron Jenkins: Let's just say that I love his unique spin on Jules and Verne. I'm not as fond of his characterization of the new Marty Jr, though - who ended up becoming a complete jerk. As he's made a point of having the future always be in flux, though, I suppose that could change.
needles1987 - October 30, 2007 06:08 AM (GMT)
I liked the Back to The Future Twisted Editions by Jamie McFly. Too bad they're not longer on fanfiction.net

Yeah, but only the first two were finished.
bttf44 - October 30, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
I see! Which ones out of mine do you like the best?
I like the story you're working on so far, and I also thought your short Dean Dean Wooster drabble was pretty funny. I'm guessing that one isn't part of your official BTTF Universe, though?
One day, I would like to do a game show type of fic - but I'm not sure if I can pull one off. I don't have the same knack as Anakin McFly with writing humour stories, and I don't know too many game shows. If I was to try writing a game show type of story, I'd probably try too hard to make it fit in with my official BTTF Universe. Of course, I do have that interview thing going on - which I would probably try to fit in as a dream sequence.
A Dog's Life was my one attempt at writing such a humour story.
needles1987 - October 30, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
I really liked your interview thing. It's pretty funny.
My favorite has got to be That '70s Story. I Enjoy Being A Doc was pretty good too.
bttf44 - October 30, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
Hey, thank you! :)
Yeah, I remember you were the one who suggested that I have Marty go back to the '70s. I initially bawked at the idea, because I thought it seemed to recent for Marty - and then I was able to work something out. I had a lot of writing writing I Enjoy Being A Doc - and That '70s Story is almost like a sequel of sorts to that story, as that features the childen of the characters featured in I Enjoy Being A Doc. Even though it's also sort of the sequel to Psychedelic Psummer (Ellen makes a reappearance) and Back to the Future I (Marty '05 reprises his Calvin Klein persona).
If I ever do write a game show type of story, I'll probably do it with a bunch of MJF characters.
You know your suggestion that I have a bunch of MJF characters being tickled at once. I think I'll be including that in the next chapter of Reality Escape. George tickles his future son's feet, while Archie tickles Jay-Jay's feet, and Doug tickles Alex's feet.
For the drabbles88 meme that's going on at LiveJournal, I asked kleenexwoman to write me a fic where Crispin tickles Michael's feet. In turn, I have to write her a BTTF fic using surrealist automatism. That's going to be a tough one to write.
