Title: Favorite Christmas Movies?
Blind Spot - December 25, 2004 11:24 AM (GMT)
(Before this gets too late to post tomorrow, LOL.;))
Just wondered what some of your favorite movies of the season are? I like a bunch, but a few examples:
Christmas Vacation: Ironically the best of the original 3 Vacation movies is the one they don't go anywhere. Here, Clark just tries to decorate the house and have a "good old-fashioned Griswold Christmas" in his own way. All the while, trying to put up with various relatives (including cousin Eddie!), his boss, and a couple of ticked-off neighbors (the wife, Margo, played by a pre-Seinfeld Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
Despite the mostly funny nature of the movie, it really does let the Christmas spirit shine through. However, I have to say toward the end of the film, the scene where Clark gets mad at his boss, he lets loose with about 30 insults & swears all in a row (I've been able to recite that almost word-for-word for years, hehe). :P
NITPICK ALERT: This was filmed in 1989, after the other two. Yet Rusty almost looks like a little kid here (I'd say 10 tops), whereas in 'Wally World' (1983) he was about 13 or 14, and in 'European' (1985) he was 15. Was this supposed to take place before the others -- maybe 1979-81? Audrey isn't comparable either 'cause in both the others, she was prolly about 13-14 as well, but here she's old (LOL), probably more like 16.
Ernest Saves Christmas: I think this is my favorite of the 'classic 4' Ernest movies. Here, Ernest is a cab driver who, through an unfortunate situation that gets him fired, ends up meeting the real Santa Claus, who is looking to retire and find a successor in a popular kids' show host, Joe Carruthers.
Along the way, they (Ernest in particular) befriends a girl around 16 I'm guessing, who -- though she's just being logical in her own mind -- basically sees Santa Claus and all as something only kids believe in. He & 'Santa' try convincing her of the real meaning of Christmas.
Oddly enough, despite the mostly silly nature of this movie, I actually think (no matter how old you are) this'll make you get in the mood for Christmas & appreciate the season. If it worked on Pam (aka Harmony) it'll work on you, LOL.
FUNNIEST SCENE: When Ernest is driving around with Santa and a Christmas tree falls off a truck, he hits the brakes in the middle of a bvusy freeway and backs up to pick the tree up, accidentally breaking one of his own windows. Yet he's totally oblivious to the honking, etc going on around him.
It's a Wonderful Life: I like alternate realities and what if-s. Plus this is one of the classic, early Xmas movies everybody's probably seen.
P.S. I like several others. These are just off the top of my head.

I bet that The Santa Clause is not one of them. Now, that's a hilarious movie.

^ Oh, forgot about Santa Clause, but I loved that one as well (the original).
It's been 10 years or so since I've seen it, so I don't remember exactly how it went, but I remember thinking the most entertaining/funniest part was Tim Allen & his kid going through the streets in the sleigh at night, when Tim asked a driver, "Do you know how to get on I-95?"

Yeah, I liked Santa Claus, haven't seen Santa Claus 2 though.
My favourite christmas movie is probably Home Alone, although I haven't seen it in ages. Home Alone 2 is almost as funny, but I just prefer the first one.

I also like It's a Wonderful Life. It's a wonderful life does remind me of BTTF a lot with the "never been born" and the alternate reality stuff. The reality where George (not George McFly, lol) isn't born is simiilar to 1985-A from BTTF Part II. If I recall correctly I think Bob Gale even mentioned It's a wonderful life in the commentary of BTTF Part II.
I liked the Santa Clause and the Santa Clause II. I have to see Elf sometime. Has anyone here seen Elf?
outatimedelorean - December 25, 2004 10:54 PM (GMT)
I saw Elf the other day. Not a film I want to see again. Yet, it was hilarious.

The Santa Clause is on my top 5 movies definately, but I actually enjoyed seeing Christmas with the Kranks. Okay, I wouldn't see it again, but who watches christmas movies more than twice a year? :D

I know what you mean. Me too.
Favourite Christmas movies of mine;
Scrooged Bill Murray's late eighties comedy which puts a modern twst on the old classic (and it's sooo funny!)
Muppet Christmas Carol Worth a watch for the songs along - Aah.
Home Alone Well someone had to say it!
Die Hard It wouldn't be Christmas without it! "Now I haf a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ho."
Life With Mikey Not a good film, to be totally honest, but at least it has Michael J Fox in it! I have to watch it each Christmas.

I actually found that movie on DVD after Christmas, so I ended up watching it. I loved the scene where McClane taped a gun to his back by using Season's Greeting tape. Maybe I'll watch it again.

Bumpy bump....
Oooh, I thought I'd add to this, since Christmas is coming :)
My favourite Xmas movie is "The Nightmare Before Christmas". You may not have seen it. I saw it on the smallest 'big screen' ever. It was screen 7 of the Odeon in Manchester (now closed) and it was the size of a large TV. Mind you I did see it in about February. I was the only person in the audience!
Anyway, it's got everything - It's suitable for the whole family, It's animated, it has music, songs, it's a bit scary, and has a happy ending! What more could you want?

^ I did see Nightmare Before Christmas. Don't plan to watch it again, though.
Forgetting Jingle All The Way, are we?

when i was a kid i always LOVED mickeys christmas carol....i used to watch it even when it wasnt christmas.
there was also some movie we had on tape that wasnt exactly a christmas movie but it was winter and i guess it was more of a cartoon. tell me if you know what i'm talking about. one part had goofy in it and he tried sking and i remember him crashing into a house or something and he couldnt get the ski lift. there was another one with donald duck and huey louie and dewey(or maybe they werent going by those names then) and i remember a part where donald used them as bowling pins and he threw a snowball at them. and there was another one where mickey and pluto are decorating the christmas tree and chip and dale keep bothering pluto and then the tree falls and mickey blames pluto. we had all of this on tape with mickeys christmas carol does anyone remember this or know what i'm talking about?

It was based on the 1980's shopping frenzy over the Cabbage Patch dolls.
What about Bad Santa? Now that's funny as hell.

"Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas".
No discussion, it's the best.
The songs, the characters, the story...all wonderful.
"It's a Wonderful Life" is a wonderful movie too. This proves that a movie doesn't need any fancy visual effects or new at least, as long as the story works. And the story is truly amazing. No wonder it's no. 29 on IMDb.com's top 250 ...
Fans of BTTF part II, would most likely love the story in this movie.
