Title: The 1990's.
Description: Your thoughts, favorite moments, etc?

This is a decade I had -- and still have -- very mixed feelings about. On one hand, I was ages 8-17, so by in large, it would be the most prevalent decade of my "generation." Even though I still, in my heart, feel like that honor belongs to the 80's - for many reasons you've already heard before. :)
Maybe because of my still "growing up" in part of the 90's made me slightly sentimentally attatched to it. Out of the positives, I actually think it had the best TV shows, esp. sitcoms (i.e. Seinfeld, Mad About You and the second half of Full House) as well as the beginning of animated sitcoms. Most notably the golden years of The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and even sillier ones, like Beavis & Butthead.
I think I also like the more "casual" nature of things. Back then, certain things would get edited on the radio or TV which, just several years later, was laughable in their seeming naivete. It was the beginning of daytime talk shows, such as Ricki Lake and Jerry Springer being acceptable.
However, with changes such as those, also come equal negatives. In general, I DON'T like the fact that it was the time when gang violence and drive-bys went from the occasional inner city problem to being just about everywhere, in the span of just a few years. Also the fact that hip hop started to permeate every aspect of pop culture, especially toward the end of the 90's.
Now, I won't say that it was directly responsible for higher crime rates or kids being more violent, etc. The gangsta rap music was simply reflective of the culture it was already in. However, I don't think it helps either, and I'll just leave it at that.
As far as other music, although it takes a big downturn after about 1991, I still like some of it. I never was a fan of grunge (a few songs are okay, but I just could never find a taste for it. I think it's because, despite still being a kid when it came out, my tastes were already "set").
Now, I do like some mainstream rock - such as Collective Soul, 3rd Eye Blind, and Sheryl Crow. I think my favorite were the pop ballads of the time -- they still were pretty popular then. Even so-so Adult Contemporary artists like Mariah Carey and Celine Dion had one or two love songs I like (did I just admit that out loud!?)
Heck, I even like some of the original pop/punkers (i.e. Green Day, Offspring) before that morphed into the dozens of copycat bands around today. They retained a harder-rocking, more humorous side to them -- to the point that even when they were angry, it was a more happy anger, unlike a wallowing anger of the grunge bands.
I also liked Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More. As contradictory as it may seem, I don't flat out hate the idea of mixing rap and rock, I just happen to think bands like those did it well. Sure it could be a little noisy, but they used lyrics you could still sing to, and some melody.
This was also the decade I became aware of politics. I still hold a special place for Bill Clinton -- not just for that, but because he was a Democrat, was pretty cool for a guy in his place (even playing the sax on the Arsenio Hall show and having Fleetwood Mac perform for his inauguration!), but mostly because I agreed with most of his political views - even though I never was much into politics.

Man, I loved the 90's. Everything about the 90's makes me wanna go back in a way. like all the fads, Beanie babies, Tomagotchi's, Furbys, it all brings back memories of my sister and I runnin out to stores and callin up all these stores and goin to McDonalds everyday just to get whatever toy was in. Those were the days when I was probably like 7 or 8 years old. Everything before that was a blurr to me, so I couldn't really tell you what happened before that. ;) I loved watching Power Rangers and Fred Penner and Bob Ross for hours. I still to this day watch The Joy of painting with Bob Ross. That's another story though. Then when I became like 9 or 10 I started liking music. Rap was my choice, because then Jay-Z had out this really cool song "Hard Knock Life" and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever heard. That's the song that got me going. Then Dr. Dre, Eminem, and some other rappers sealed the deal. I was listening to rap a lot more. The 90's set my whole mindset, and now in the 00's I know what I wanna do. The 90's were awesome to me, and they were also some of the best years for wrestling. The WWF/WCW war set wrestling at an all time high, and a man named Stone Cold Steve Austin was leading the way. Wrestlign was another thing from the 90's that I thank God I got into.

Anyone watched "I Love The 90'S" on VH1?
I taped 1996,97,98,99 since everything before 1996 i don't really remember.I got this Screen Name:BeanieRobert2000 in 1998 because i really loved Beanie Babies,Robert is my middle name and the 2000 i just picked...then in 2001 i changed it to 2001 because thats the year i grad. 5th grade. So that means that my SN has something to do with the 90s.
I LOVED the spice girls...a HUGE fan.I like the 90's but that was a hard time in my life...a lot of stress!
2004 was the best year i ever had.

I remember the spice girls and backstreet boys.
They were great back then but they quickly died off.
I also remember in the 90's Star Wars came back in theatres with the remastered edition.
Man that was a day to remember, watching Star Wars 1 in the movies. :D

My best memory of the 90s is before I moved house into Taunton. It was (we used to lived in a small terraced house in Ilminster) when the fair was in town, I could see it quite clearly from my bedroom window. Another was the carnival, which used to pass right in front of our house, so we could sit in the upstairs bedroom and watch it go by. Those were the days.
As for the game consoles, we had the best!! A Sega Master system. It had ace games including a Flintstones one which involved painting a wall and an Asterix and Oblix game, that was cool!

Wow, it was interesting to read my original post - I almost forgot about this thread! ;)
As for game consoles, I have to admit I fell out of flavor with videogames around 1994, mainly because NES games were on the decline by then, and since I was 12 I didn't quite have the time to learn new games as much as, say 5 years earlier.
However, some of my friends/peers had Sega Genesis - which I played occasionally. I remember that big black controller, LOL! It didn't last too long, 'cause Nintendo 64 came along next.

well i was a HUGE backstreetboys fan...OBSESSED with them...but then they werent around for a long time and i lost interest.....and i graduated in 1999.....i'll never forget that day...but i think i like the 80's better than the 90's...the 80's had better tv shows....they started to get bad in the 90's
Blind Spot - September 9, 2005 02:19 PM (GMT)
^ Agreed. :)
The 90's were the best sitcom decade -- whereas the 2000's are the Reality TV decade (can we say "out of ideas"? LOL).
Overall, roughly my favorite times for the following:
Movies: 1985-1995 (the "80s" in movies lasted longer than anything else. Guys like Pauly Shore - even though they were big in the 90's, seemed 80's in spirit)
Music: 1979-1992 (I like alot of 60's and 70's too, but for about 10-15 years there it was like everything coming out was great!)
TV Shows: Mid 80's - late 90's (the only good shows now are older ones still up and running, like The Simpsons)
Videogames: Early 80's - early 90's (when the NES and Super NES started fading away I lost interest.

The 90s was pretty cool, got some great shows like Friends, beavis and butthead and there were afew pretty good films out in the 90s, Robert Zemeckis gave us another classic movie that you can watch again and again Forrest Gump and also one of my fav bands came out in the 90s Oasis and you carnt forget the great jim carrey making it big in the 90s.
80s and early 90s was the best.
If you look at my Dvd collection you can see most of my movies are from the 80s and early 90s. Since we hit 2000 there have not been many films made that i could call classics well i carnt think of any at moment.

Kinda hard to have classics since 2000, as they'd only be 5 years old at most...but the first set of movies that came to my mind were the LOTR films. They'll probably be considered "classics" in the future.
I have fond memories of the 90s, as the period made up most of my childhood. One thing that comes to mind is the growth in popularity of having a computer. I remember learning to type in elementary school and playing games waaaay back in the day on Apple II-e's, those old computers with black screens and green print. It's hard to believe how dependant we are on computers nowadays compared to back then.

What i ment was i carnt see any film that has been made since 2000 ever being a classic , i mean in the 80s early 90s you could just tell a film was going to be a classic but since 2000 nah some of the films been good but will never be classics

I'm love/hate with the 90s. Some really good things, some really bad things.
Here are my +/-
+ Sitcoms (TGIF, Seinfeld, Simpsons, etc.)
+ Pro wrestling (95 was the only really dead year)
+ Sports in general
+ Video games
+ Best SNL alumni group (90-95 cast) since the 70s, and some hilarious movies by members of this group in the late 90s (Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Waterboy, Airheadz, Beverly Hills Ninja, Necessary Roughness, etc.). I rank the late Farley up there with the best SNL alums in physical comedic skills.
+ Internet
- Music
- Personal stuff I won't get into, mostly related to being a teen at the time
- Rebirth of American war after a relative 'break' in the 70s & 80s.
- Fashion
- Internet

Huh? You don't like the internet?
I don't think I like the 90's very much, besides tv shows and some other stuff. The clothes fashion was horrible- really ugly looking in my opinion.

I put internet on both sides, good and bad. It's eaten up a bunch of time, and much of it was pursuing pretty trivial stuff in retrospect. But then again, you can find just about anything online, especially with a cable modem, so it's really a love/hate thing.

Try using it on a 56K dial-up modem then you'll hate it. That's what I have for mine, but I don't hate it, only when it doesn't want to load sometimes.

When I was living in the 90s, I thought nothing of it. But now that I've seen this decade, I want to go back.
