Title: 1980's Sitcoms.
Description: Discuss any of them.
Blind Spot - July 13, 2004 09:24 AM (GMT)
I wasn't as much into TV shows in the 80's as I was with video games and music - but I still have some memories of the era's sitcoms (either at the time, or from reruns later). Anyhow, are there any that come to mind you particularly like, or just care to share your thoughts on? My Top 2 might be:
1) Full House: I can hear the laughs flying :o , LOL, but seriously, I always got a kick out of it, even Bob Saget, former host of America's Funniest Home Videos. I still find the same things humorous as I did 10 years ago, but I now am starting to see the slightly serious parts of the show.
For instance, one that comes to mind is the episode where DJ accidentally forgets Kimmie's 16th birthday party, because she was going out with Steve. Of course, that wasn't without its funny parts too ("There's alot I can do with you that I can't do with Steve. Like, talk about Steve." ).
2) Growing Pains: I guess this, too, had some mix of funny and serious. I still tend to prefer the earlier episodes, before the Seivers' new baby came along. I still remember the very first show I remember seeing: Jason & Joanna went out and left the three kids alone, with Mike in charge. They kept worrying about what could happen in that scenario.
One line which I posted here, which really stands out is Joanna saying to Jason how Mike was 15 and couldn't drive, and why they shouldn't have left him in charge. Jason responds with, "He doesn't have to drive the house, he just has to sit in it." :D
BTW, y'all can pick any show that was aired in the 80's, even if it didn't completely have its reign there (for instance, both those shows went well into the 90's). You could also list one that started in the 70's, but trucked along into the 80's. :)

^I watched reruns of Full House. It was a pretty funny show. :D
I liked the one comedian guy, I forget all their names, but he was really funny. :D
Eastwood McFly - July 13, 2004 04:24 PM (GMT)
Full House and Growing Pains were very funny shows, I espically liked like Mike from Growing Pains he was a good character.
The Cosby Show is another great 80's sitcom. I don't laugh a lot of that show but I like watching it because it reminds me of a family trying to live a normal life with Bill himself. :D

Hey, we can't forget about Family Ties! :88:
I actually didn't get into FT until this past year, after I got into BTTF and Michael J. Fox. I used to watch Growing Pains, but I think that I liked FT better overall.
BTW, did GP start after FT did?

Alternate Strickland - September 17, 2004 02:11 AM (GMT)
Of those mentioned above my favorite is Family Ties. I also like Growing Pains and the Wonder years. Full House is ok but I never really got into it.
I'll name some more 80s sitcoms I like later.

I didn't live through the 80's, but I absolutely love Family Ties. I think I can remember watching it before I started liking MJF and BTTF, but now I watch it every night, since somebody very thoughtful put it back on TV1 this month. :D
I've seen a couple of episodes of Full House-funny stuff, but it didn't quite click for me. But you gotta love Bob Saget, right? :P
tranked_low-res_scuzzball - December 14, 2004 10:14 AM (GMT)
Love Bob Saget? Of course.
I love Family Ties, and I've been watching that every night on TV1 as well. :)

*gasp* Finally, someone else from the land down under! Aren't you glad they put Family Ties back on at a good time? I can remember when it used to be on at 3:30pm, and I'd always used miss it because of school!
tranked_low-res_scuzzball - December 15, 2004 04:34 AM (GMT)
I am really glad they put it on at a good time. I never used to miss because of school, but I wouldn't be able to watch it because I would miss half of them for training, *sigh*.

^I've been away on holidays for 2 weeks-are they still playing Family Ties at 6:00? Did anyone catch the Christmas episode?
:P
Kyle McFly - January 9, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
I love Cheers. It, Family Ties and The Cosby Show were the greatest shows of the 80's. I still laugh at it just because it is that funny. The only other shows as funny as Cheers are MASH, THe Simpsons, and Seinfeld, and Scrubs as well. But Cheers is one of the best all-time sitcoms. Norm is one of the best characters that has ever been on TV.
Alternate Strickland - January 9, 2005 07:11 PM (GMT)
I remember that I used to like the 80s sitco Punky Brewster when I was younger and it re-ran on the Family Channel. I haven't seen it in a long time though. I also like Alf!
Jamie McFly - February 12, 2005 09:51 PM (GMT)

I've seen The Munsters Today. '80s Marilyn scared the crap out of me. I prefer the gorgeous Marilyn from the '60s.
bttf44 - September 8, 2007 07:28 AM (GMT)
Family Ties! Family Ties! Family Ties! :)
Actually, Saved By The Bell was more '90s than '80s.

Do you think they call it Family Ties because Alex always wears a tie?
bttf44 - October 14, 2007 05:23 AM (GMT)
The title could have a double meaning! :)
needles1987 - October 20, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
I saw A Keaton Christmas Carol on youtube last night. Alex looked disturbing as a fat bald guy.
bttf44 - October 20, 2007 06:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Old Alex looked even worse than Old Marty did. Did you find the Keaton living room in that sequence to be very disturbing?
needles1987 - October 21, 2007 02:30 AM (GMT)
Yeah. I did. And poor Alex wanted to stay in the past and sing Christmas carols with his family.
needles1987 - November 24, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
I also really liked Ducktales.
bttf44 - November 24, 2007 06:09 AM (GMT)
Alex aged even worse than Marty did. Of course, being a sitcom - rather than a theatrical film - they didn't even bother to make the characters realistically look the ages they were supposed to be. I don't think someone as young as Tina Yothers (I think she was ten, then) could realistically be aged up to a middle-aged adult.
needles1987 - December 18, 2007 02:46 AM (GMT)
I also really like Married with Children.
