Title: Characters Ethnic Backgrounds?

McFly Family: Seamus and Maggie are both from Ireland.

Click here This is where I found out the ethnic origins of last names. It turns out that McFly is a real last name. But it's Scottish. But many Scottish names could be considered Irish, like McIntyre or McCoy.

Doc Brown: He said his father emigrated from Germany. His mother's maiden name is Lathrop, which is English.

Clara Clayton: Clayton is an English name.

Lou Carruthers: Carruthers is a Scottish name.

Red Thomas: He could be either English, German, or Welsh.

Tannen Family: I couldn't find out the ethnicity of the name Tannen, but the song "O Tannenbaum" led me to believe it's German.

Baines Family: Baines is an English name.

"Data" Unger: Unger is a German name.

"Spike" O'Malley: I didn't have to look it up to know it's Irish.

"Whitey" Nogura: There were no matches for that name, but I think he's Japanese, judging by his hoverboard, which had a rising sun design. And Nogura sounds like a Japanese name.

Strickland: Strickland is an English name.

Mark Dixon: Dixon is a Scottish name.

Jennifer Parker: Parker is an English name.

Otis Peabody: English

They don't have Rundgren or Garfunkel - but they gave Palmer, Haven, and Bourgeois.

Ficverse characters I have with such names:

Sabrina Palmer - Doc's witch friend
Tabitha Palmer - Sabrina's youngest child, inherits witch powers
Diana Palmer - Sally and Toby's friend, also a witch
Marcus Palmer - Joey and Ellen's friend, also a witch
Tatianna Palmer - Kristina's friend in Doxopolis, no relation to Sabrina Palmer

Julia Mae Rundgren - "real world" resident who falls for Marty
Vincent Jared Rundgren - Julia's younger brother, falls for Jennifer
Martii Rundgren - youngest of the Rundgren siblings, changes name to Calvin
Julia Belle (JB) Rundgren - Vincent and Jennifer's daughter

Simona Garfunkel - one of Julia's "real world" friends

Emily Haven - one of Julia's "real world" friends
Tori Haven - tentatively the name of the girl that the Browns adopt, no relation to Emily Haven

Rachel Bourgeois - the girl who gets Michael J Fox audited, is later the mother of Maria Sabel (Julia's "real world" friend)
Kristina Bourgeois - enters Doxopolis while running away from home, is neice of Rachel

They don't have Beaudelaire or Quagmire, but I think Beaudelaire is French. And Wikitionary didn't give the word "Quagmire" any origin besides English.

I'm not sure if Quagmire is a real last name. I'm unsure of McFly.

It's funny to think of how the name Klaus Baudelaire flows smoothly - even though the former is German, and the latter is French.

It looks like Haven and Palmer are both English.

Quagmire is a real last name. There is an American cartoonist named Joshua Quagmire.

BTW, what do you think of the name Simona Garfunkel? :)

needles1987 - March 30, 2008 07:19 PM (GMT)
I like it. It's like Simon and Garfunkel.

Origins of other names in bttf4444's ficverse:

Alcott (Stella's maiden name): English

Smith (Beatrice Beaudelaire's maiden name): It could be either English, Dutch, German, Irish, or Scottish.

Franklin (Patty's maiden name): English

Schultz (Calvin's girlfriend April): German or Dutch

White (William's wife Annette's maiden name): English, Irish, or Scottish

Larson (Sylvia's maiden name): Danish, German, Norwegian, or Swedish

Conner (Clara Parker's mother's maiden name): Irish

Paradise (Jennifer's mother's maiden name): English or French

Kinsky (Jennifer's husband Todd's birth name): They didn't have Kinsky on there, but Pinsky is Polish.

Here's Marty's Ethnic background in my ficverse.

George is Irish and German. Lorraine is English and Italian.

needles1987 - April 17, 2008 04:35 AM (GMT)
Fox is an Irish name.

bttf44 - April 17, 2008 04:47 AM (GMT)
Oh, it is? Well, I guess MJF may be Irish. :)

Imagine having the name Todd Fox. Todd means "fox".

Do you know anyone with Michael for a last name? It's probably not too common, but I'm sure there are some out there.
