Title: A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Description: A dark children's series

A friend over at FFN has convinced me to watch the movie and check out the books. I was initially very resistent, and I'm not into stories that are too dark - but the thing that made me crack is finding out that the series takes place in a retro-universe. So you could probably have the stories take place at any time after the '50s.

Anybody read the books, or watched the movie?

I've seen the movie and I read the first two books. I didn't know that the books took place in a retro-futuristic universe.

Yeah, it mixes things from various time periods. Sometime this summer, I might do a BTTF/ASOUE crossover fic. I'll probably be able to see the movie later this week.

Well, I've watched the movie - and I've read all the books! :) I never thought I'd get as much into ASOUE as I did. BTTF will continue to be my main fandom, though.

What do you think are the major differences between the movie and the books? What about the time period portrayed?

The books are done differently from the movie chronologically. You can't really tell when it takes place. The cars are from the thirties. They dress like it's the 19th century.

Actually, I think some of the cars are from as late as the '60s. It's supposed to take place in an alternate universe. As I'm kind of a stickler for details, and I also have a crossover with BTTF planned - I had to come up with a specific year for the events of ASOUE to occur. So, as a result, I just aligned the Quagmires irthdate with that of Marty's.
