Title: Black People Ridiculed For Liking Rock Music

I think it's stupid that black people get a lot of flack just because they like listening to Rock and Roll instead of the stuff they're "supposed" to like, like Rap and R & B. On imdb, I saw a post about a black kid who got beat up for wearing a Led Zeppelin T-shirt.

Can you give me the link? I want to check that topic out? I think it's stupid when people criticize others for their taste in music. People have a right to listen to wehatever they like.

Thanks! I'll check that out. I know teens sometimes have a similar problem for liking older music.

Here's what I said:
I think it's stupid to segregate what kind of music other people are "allowed" to listen to - based on things like gender, race, age, nationality, or whatever. I know some Americans who get picked on for liking obscure (south of the border, that is) Canadian bands - think like Sloan, Moist, Harlequin, The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, even Saga and April Wine. Then there is also younger generation who tend to get picked on for liking older rock music - and I'm not talking about just being picked on by their peers, but even by older adults who themselves like the music.
It also does seem like, in this day and age, social norms and social expectations dictate what kind of music certain demogaphic goups ae expected to listen. There ae people who are ashamed of their tastes and hide it from others. Then there are those who outrightly rebel against such social norms and let people know they refuse to conform to social expectations placed on them.
Instead of the tradition of teens rebelling against their parent's generation's music, we know have teens rebelling against the social expectations of what types of music their generation is expected to like.

I have never heard of any teen getting picked on by older adults for liking the same music. Have you actually met some people like that? I'd hate to meet them.
Most older adults think it's cool that I like the same music as them and that I'm not listening to the crap most kids are listening to.

It appears that the majority of older adults think it's awesome, but there are some that seem to take issue with the younger generation liking "their" music. I've heard of teens who have had bad experiences with record store clerks acting condescending of their age - and some older adults refusing to take them seriously, because of their age.

So in your fics, Marty and Jennifer represent the older adults who think it's awesome?

Right, that's true! I know there are some who have even been criticized by their own parents for liking older music.
I also know someone whose parents didn't want her liking Michael J Fox, because they thought she should like an actor that's much younger. What the parents seem to fail to understand, though, is that she actually thinks Michael was hot back in the '80s - not at his current age.
Of course, this can go the other way, too. I know some older adults that do enjoy listening to newer types of music, who have been criticized by the younger generation for trying to gove the appearance of being "hip" - and, likewise, some teens who like older music are criticized by older adults for trying to give the impression of being "intelligent". It 'slike some just can't seem to accept that maybe some people listen to a particular music style simply because, well, because they like it.

Teenage girls never get criticized for liking Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt, and they're almost as old as Michael J. Fox.
