Title: Villian Names
Description: The Association Factor

Does it bother you when the villians of certain movies, TV shows, or stories that names that you associate with very who very much not villians - or if it's a name you really like?
I was reading about how the villainous protagonist in A Clockwork Orange was named Alex, and it kind of bugged a little - because I've come to associate that name with MJF's character from Family Ties, Alex P Keaton. While Alex P Keaton may come off as a bit pompous at times, he really is a caring individual with a heart of gold - and he would never hurt anyone.

It was never a big problem with me. In most movies I watch and books I read, villains always had villainous names like Biff, Darth Vader, or Voldemort.

I'm sure there are some people in this world named Biff, even though it's not a common name. I know I often use Charlie as a name for a bully. Billy is a name I actually used for a villian (Billy Needles) and as a name for one of Marty's bandmates (Billy Winterson).
I know of two different instances where Harmony was used as a name of a snobbish girl. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harmony was Cordelia's snobbish friend who later on ostracizes her from the cool crowd - and later on becomes a vampire. The other one was the daughter of the protagonist in the Christian children series, Kid's Praise - who does end up having a change of heart towards the end. Of course, the Harmony I use in my stories is a very sweet girl. A long time, back when I was about 12, I tried writing stories about a pair of twins named Harmony and Melody - which I modelled after the twins in the Sweet Valley series. Harmony was the good twin, while Melody was more impulsive.
I guess it all comes down to personal associations - but, yeah, I also don't like the idea of villians being named Marty or Mike - or Todd or Brent. Interestingly enough, I'm not quite as bothered when villians have the same name as me.

I don't really mind when villains or jerks have the same name as me.

Have you ever actually met a Miff or a Jiff? Or are those names you made up?
bttf44 - September 6, 2007 04:40 AM (GMT)
Actually, Jennifer Jane McFly made up the name Miff. I haven't really met anyone named Jiff, but it's almost like Jeff - so I imagine some people may have that name.

I wonder if there's going to be Tannens with names like Spiff and Riff.

Those are some other good ones. Riff may be too much like Griff, though.

I have the same name as Mallory's boyfriend on Family Ties.

Oh, Nick? What do you think of Nick on Family Ties? Do you think he'd be the type of person to taunt Marty by calling him a "chicken"?
needles1987 - December 19, 2007 05:50 AM (GMT)
I think he's kind of a jerk. I don't think he would call Marty a chicken unless Marty says no to riding his motorcycle.

That's actually what happened in When Realities Collide. At first, he commented about Marty seeming to be cooler than his "twin" - then, after Marty turned down a motorcycle ride, then Nick asked him if he was a "chicken".
Do you think he's be the kind of person to scoff at the concept of Alex P Keaton being "for peace and harmony"?
needles1987 - December 19, 2007 07:46 AM (GMT)
I have no idea what his opinion would be on that.
bttf44 - December 19, 2007 07:54 AM (GMT)
I see! Does he often pick on Alex?
needles1987 - December 19, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
I never seen him pick on Alex. I don't think he's a bully. I don't think he's ever even been mean to Mallory. He's a better person than what the Keaton's give him credit for.
I've never seen Nick interact with Skippy. Skippy has a huge crush on Mallory.
