Title: How Popular Was Marty?
Description: I think he was well-liked.

He pretty much seemed like your typical '80s "cool kid". He rides a skateboard, he plays the electric guitar, and he wears the fashions of that era. I don't get how some people deduct that Marty didn't have too many friends. I'm sure he plenty of friends in 1985 (including the members of his band), they just weren't very important to the story. Anyway, how can somebody as cute as Marty not have that many friends. I don't think anyone who looks like Michael J Fox (even Alex P Keaton) would really have any difficulty making friends.
I think Marty is pretty well-liked in his school, even though he's certainly not stuck-up. He seems like the kind of person who would be friendly to everyone, including the misfits at his high school. I can't really see Marty being mean to anyone. He's probably popular in a very unsnobbish kind of way.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on that?

I agree. I believe he was very well-liked. You just didn't see very many of his friends in the movie.

Right, I agree! I think he does have a lot of friends, but they just aren't important to the plot. So you only see the members of his band briendly. In fact, I'm not even sure which actor plays each member of the band. If I'm not mistaken, I think the one who plays the bass guitar (Zach Nelson, in my fanfic universe) is played by the one who was MJF's guitar instructer.

I wonder if Aaron Nelson gets made fun of for his mullet. They were considered cool in the 80s for some reason, but I think he gets made fun of for having one in 2016.

There probably are some people who would give Aaron a hard time. Other people may like the '80s revival, though.
Here is an interesting parallel that I made in
A Tale of Martin McFly:
Marty McFly ~ Martin McFly ~ protagonist
Jennifer Parker ~ Juniper Parker ~ love interest
Zach Nelson ~ James Nelson ~ best friend
Douglas Needles ~ Bart Needles ~ antagonist
It's kind of ironic that I never really thought to expand on Zach's lineage. I guess it's because Zach has such a minor role in my stories. For the record, no, James obviously would not have a mullet. I do imagine Martin with the same hairstyle as Marty - and I imagine Juniper's hair being a little bit longer.
I guess this was where the idea of featuring Needles' ancestors as bullies pretty well started. Then, when I started writing Blast to the Past, I realized there were no Tannens who would be the same age as Dr. Emmett Brown - so I decided to use a Needles instead. That would also give Doc and Marty more common ground of having been bullied by a Needles. Then, when I was writing Psychedelic Psummer, I ran into the same problem - so I used Hank Needles, who would be Douglas' father. It's pretty much just went on from there.
Basically, The Pinheads include:
Martin "Marty" McFly: lead guitar and lead vocals
Zachery "Zach" Nelson: bass guitar
Joseph "Joey" Landvatter: keyboards
William "Billy" Winterson: drums
In the Almanac Universe, Calvin (Hell Valley Marty) McFly also plays the rhythm guitar.
There really is nothing in the films that firmly establishes the fact that Marty is the lead singer of his band, since there was no singing during the audition. Still, as Marty appears to be the leader of his band, that's pretty much what I went with. Of course, they could also be like The Beatles, and take turns singing lead. It doesn't seem to be that kind of style, though.

Are Douglas' ancestors just as ugly as him?

Needles makes Biff seem like a good-looking guy.

I highly doubt a lot of the girls at Hill Valley High School really saw Biff Tannen as being a good looking guy, or really had a crush on him. I suppose it could happen, but I just don't see that. I suppose Marty's height might hurt him in some ways, as many girls seem to like their guys to be tall - or, at least, taller than them. There are other, though - like me, for instance - who think short guys can be very cute. There really is nothing about Marty to not like. He's just a very easy-going and friendly person.
Do you think Marty would've been nice to George, even if George wasn't his father? He maybe wouldn't been as close to George, but I don't think he would've ever made fun of George. He probably tried to be nice to everyone - well, except the bullies! The bullies are hardly likeable people, though. I like how Alex is so friendly to Skippy in Family Ties.

I think Marty would be nice to George.

Yeah, I think so, too. If we accept that Michael J Fox does exist in the BTTF Universe - which I know not everyone does - then some of the girls may have a crush on Marty for that reason.

Probably another good question would be, how popular is Marty Jr? He seemed to be somewhat cool, even if he was also a bit geeky. We don't really know if he had a lot of friends, but it did seem almost like he wanted to be liked by Griff's gang. Maybe Spike was somewhat attracted to him, in a strange sort of way. He also didn't seem as shy about talking to girls, as he grandfather was - plus, he did seem to have a more colourful vocabulary, if you know what I mean.
needles1987 - August 1, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
He sure wasn't afraid of talking back to cars that honked at him. George would've just said "sorry" to the cars that honked at him.

Yeah, he wasn't exactly a clone of his grandfather - and he did seem to have some of his father in him. Marty maybe wouldn't had as much of a hard time asking Marty Jr to ask a girl out to the dance. With a little bit of a push, he maybe would've become a little more confident. That's why I can't imagine him still being a wimp in the final timeline. Marty would've raised his children up to have more confidence in themselves.
