Title: Spawning aggresion?
Mumusuki - September 16, 2006 05:13 PM (GMT)
This is normal for spawning bettas right? Like, before they spawn. This is my first attempt, and I am just not sure if it is supposed to be bad like this....Thanks!

That was just a love bite..
If it gets to the point where he is all over her, and shredding her to bits, then I would worry... If he is tearing scales off her body, I would also worry about that as well.
If she is bleeding, or meat is showing, PULL HER!!! And give him a spanking.

it has gotten better now. They are trying to wrap at this very moment!! :D

Here is what is funny... Aggression is tied to veirility. Experiments were done (from what I have read) that tried to select for a less aggresive fish, and eventually, the fish wouldn't breed, or had fertility problems...
Also, there are some females that won't breed unless the male spanks her around a little.
It is almost like the female wants to see that he is man enough to hold his territory, otherwise why is she going to waste time breeding to him, when he is going to lose his turf, and her eggs are going to get eaten
It would seem that he proved himself to her, and she likd it, and I am hoping you have eggs, and fry to fuss over.

You got a female that is very aggressive who bite and not willing to mate type. Usually the male is the one who is more aggressive that will bite the female first.
As I can see, I don't think you get this pair breed. Is it?
As halfmoon pair that is virgin, I always pair them up next to each container side by side for one month. Usually they will get used to each other until the female willing to breed with him.
Yes, Breeding halfmoon is not as easy as what you think. That is why breeding HMPK is better since the male can swim faster and can attack the female first. ^_^

But they bred, Yeevers... You missed that.

His tummy is really big. Did he ate all the eggs?
Mumusuki - September 18, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
YA, he ended up eating most of the eggs. But I got him out before he ate ALL of the eggs because he had abandoned his nest and just swam away and never checked on it.
Guess what!?!? There were some eggs when I went to sleep last night lying on the floor of the tank. And this morning, they were gone. I figured the snails ate them.
But I checked again when I came home from school just in case. and I see little things probably about the size of bbs, maybe smaller. They are kinda squirming around. I think these are the babies that hatched from the eggs on the ground. But the thing is, when they become free swimming, I probably won't be able to see them because they will go in "The Clump".
Are these really babies? They are super teeny, but I can see them swimming among the junk down there.
Yeevs, if I ever do breed this pair again, I will probably leave the female in instead of the male.

What snails are those? You only put snails in when the frys know how to swim. Else you had to dividing them to one corner to create infurosia. They will eat eggs or hatching frys on the floor.
Frys should be bigger that BBS. I am not sure what are you talking about. If you got pictures to show, that will be great. As for leaving the female, You can try that.
As what I can tell, maybe your pair is still young. If I were you, I try to put them side by side for a month. Then breed them again. ^_^

If they look like two black dots next to each other, or you see Mickey Mouse ears, those are fry. Even if you can't see anything, feed the tank for at least 10 days.
Sometimes they hide, and only become readily visable around then...

It ends up that what I was seeing was insuforia... LOL I didn't know that you COULD see them! LOL
They are pond snails. I didn't mean to have them come, I think they came in on the HUGE clump of java moss and hair algae and hornwort that I threw in there for insuforia... so they probably ate the eggs.
I WILL try again. LOL i think I can, i think I can.....

Mumusukigood luck next time!!!!!!!!
yeevia2006 - September 21, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
That is what I thought too. Infurosia. The frys will be 10 times bigger than bbs. You said they looks like bbs so infurosia match what you are saying. :lolo:
Well, Try again next time in a month. The pair is still young. I have a pair like that before but after two months, I try breeding them again the same pair and the eggs do fertile. ;)

Like I aid, feed the tank, you might be surprised, if not, well it isn't like you didn't have to wait anyway.
Mumusuki - September 21, 2006 09:51 PM (GMT)
LOL Yup. Insuforia.
Yes, I think they ARE young. So I will try next month... hopefully it will go better.
