Title: Spawning a DT to a CT
Description: would it work?
Betta Blossoms - July 23, 2006 07:54 PM (GMT)
ok, this guy has insane finnage! so I chose a CT female with smaller fins, and a smaller body to spawn with him, What would I get ffrom this spawn? Pick comming as soon as I load them :D
He is my friend's fish she got him from walmart *the same walmart I got my SD's from and my 4-ray CT, and all my not homebred CT girlies* He is very nice indeed! even lobes, long body, and long dorsel, the split goes all the way to the body. The pictures for sure dont do him justice!
The female has bred once, and has week old fry, she is at her house right now, setteling in and I hope she will be smart enough to finish conditioning her, she always is loaded with eggs, so I expect a good spawn, he isnt realy red, sortof pink..I'm not real sure..she is a blue color with red wash, and is my favorite female from her spawn, her spawn sister hasnt beed bred, and most likely wont be, I breed for full colored females, and that other female has a black body and red fins..one brother is multi colored, and the other is bi colored..I dont know anything about the boy, other than what I see...but I do think I might have gotten a spawn sister, she is a CT and is currently batteling for her tiny life, so she is out of the question for a while, this ick just wont let up :(
so..any idea as to what we will get? His next mate will be a DT geno girl from Al That shipment will come in sometime next week, and then she will be conditioned at the same time he is, and they will be bred at my house...I hope to have a happy update with the spawn, I am all ready to pick out a few spawn pairs from this to get some awesome DTs :WOW:

Yes. Load up the pictures and I can tell more. It will be helpful if you add the information about the male and female parent too. ;)

Here's a pic of my female from a DT/CT cross:

Note that she has the big DT dorsal. She also the CT crowning on her fins. She's also eggnormungous!!!!!!!! LOL Any way, if I were to breed her to her DT/CT brother (which I don't have. The breeder got nearly all females out of a spawn of 150), I'd get probably get DT with some crowning, DTs, CTs. So, you'd more than likely have to wait until F2 to see any results that you are looking for.
For colors, yeah, I'd have to see some pics! LOL

I havent really seen any "Real Life" Double tail crown tails yet, but some photos are very nice :D
Synirr - July 27, 2006 04:32 AM (GMT)
I saw a CTDT at the last Texas betta show, he was quite the looker :D
It takes 2 generations to get any decent CTDT fish, 1 in 16 in the F2 should be CTDT. After that, you can breed two of those together and get all CTDT.
Betta Belle - July 27, 2006 11:57 AM (GMT)
I just need to add the usual disclaimer about breeding DT to DT here. Crowned or not, you still open yourself up to the likelyhood or deformities by breeding DT to DT.
A better bet would be to breed DT to DTgeno CT
Synirr - July 28, 2006 03:37 AM (GMT)
Yeah, true Belle, I guess it depends on what you want to do. DTCT to DTCT will give you 100% DTCT, but you're likely to have more culls. DTCT to DT with CT geno or CT with DT geno is only going to give you 50% DTCT, but fewer culls.

The only good pic of mom, I can find..
A trial breeding was done and, although the female got nipped a little, it went well..untill the male had a snack..So, the next breeding will take place at my house..Lucky for them, i'm not going on vacation, so they dont have to deal with my sister. *the fry I have..had were killed my my sister, i now only have 5 fry left, out of over 50.. :OPPS: *

no, he dident bit at his tail, its just that way I guess, I assume he has Ct in him, but I just have to wait and see, I got 2 whole fry out of this
He is a TERRIBLE father, but I will keep spawning him, and see if he gets any better, atleast this time he waited for some eggs to hatch <_<

oh, dont feel bad for her, I think I'm gunna name her spunky, but it sounds a bit too much like a dog's name *a bad dog name, but a dog name non the less lol*
she is all over the place and is going back to the 20 gallon I think saturday, I just want to look har over realy well, and make sure everything is healing, being with her sisters will help her I think, the males are giving her eyes lol *she promoted many of my males to build nests lol* I STILL havent seen her sister yet, but there were 2 bettas left at walmart, her, and her sister, I bought her, but I dident even know what she looked like because the cups they were in were frosted..but, my friend actually bought the other as a birthday pressy for another good friend of mine, who actually lives a few houses down the road..hehe, I get free breeding rights for all of her bettas..:P and she gets the bettas I retire, so its all good lol

ouch what a hunk of fins she lost. poor baby. Oh my what they go through to have babies
LaBella - August 25, 2006 10:01 AM (GMT)
Evolution works odd, and our hand in it makes them more agressive it seems. Some femlaes won't breed unless the male smacks them around a little, and it seems themore experieance a male has, the less beating up the female goes through.
But males that were raised with their fathers, as well as females SEEM to do easier on their partners... It doesn't seem to be an evolutionary advantage to get the crap beat out of you, unless the idea is you lay your eggs, and die, leaving room for your kids, and you tend your fry and and get shoved out, making your kids have to fend for self, and the strongest are able to out the intruders...
Still in the long term it probably doesn't work out.
I haven't been abl to figure out why they are so rough on each other, and what I put down is the only idea I have been able to come up with, and it has many holes in it.
bettaqueen - August 25, 2006 01:46 PM (GMT)
I am thinking instinct maybe after all they are called Siamese fighting fish
LaBella - August 25, 2006 04:40 PM (GMT)
Well the males fight for territory, ect, but the females wander through the different territories of the males in her area, and other females share the same area.
I am thinking that is might have a large part to do with the antisocial method of rearing most of us do.
As has been noted, bopth genders, when raised with the father, are better behaved in the breeding tank, damage the partner less, and are better fathers themselves (for the males) than those that are not raised with the father...
This is in general, of course.
I think that without extra stimulia, and as a result of being jarred, the females get more aggressive, it has even been said that females from a community tank are easier breeders than those who have been jarred.
I don;t know how true it is, but it is interesting if it is true.
Betta Blossoms - August 28, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
well, I have a female that grew up with all sorts of fish, and I will show you what she did to my CT  Poor guy, hes deff a lover not a figher lol..then again, he isnt much of a lover either  lol oh well, hes on his 4TH try at breeding, his tail is tiny now..but i actaully think he is cuter lol sort of my own verson of a PK..in a crude kind of way
but , all my girls come from a female cumunity tank with some guppies on the occation, and they all seem pretty nice..but i guess I also raised 3 males, and 2 other females with that othre emale...so I guess the jury is still out lol

It is very normal for a female that been bitten like this. I always have better luck if pair them side by side while they growth up. They do better when breeding. I only have this problem when I got bettas from different Thailand breeders that are not the same sibling. ^_^
LaBella - August 30, 2006 05:58 AM (GMT)
I am still working on my female theory, but I have noticed that fish that have spent more time with each other, are less rough on their partners, on everage.
Doesn't always quiet work out that way, but on average it does.
I don't card when conditioing in the begining, because I have noticed it makes the malesmore aggressive to the females.
I do start carding them towards the end of their conditioning, and that seems to make them more attentive to eac other, but when it comes down to making the final wrap... bleh.
Betta Blossoms - September 3, 2006 04:09 PM (GMT)
