Title: Copper SD X Super Black PK
AiWen - July 17, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
I just got myself a Copper Super Delta with 8 rays. I'm thinking about spawning him with my Super Black Plakat female who has 2 rays. I'd like to know if this is a good combo and what would result of them. Thanks.
Here's the male:

Here's the female:

Yeevia. That is the girl you sent me. Remember her? I'm gonna breed her to the Super Black male first. This is just the plan afterwards.

Well super black and coppers wll give you copper lacks, but the amount of copper to black is going to vary.
As the sire is just an SD and the dam is a 2 ray K, you are going to get at most SD, but they will probably have nice straight edges.
There may be an issue with VTing from the PK female though
Color wise, they might come out looking like this...

hi-
i recently am doing pretty much the same thing-
i have a super black plakat- traditional type, no female to match, so i spawned him to a copper black halfmoon female
this is her and her spawn brother in previous mating

so i spawn her to the super black plakat- all male fry have long tails- not vt- but kinda bell shaped- they are black, but with lots of irridesence- the fry resemble theyre dad a bit, but with the chunkier body of my halfmoons- dad is a very sleek fish, identical to the super black of dong that yeevia has posted- mine came from thailand so maybe related i dunno-
here is a pic of some of the offspring- from a few weeks ago- not fully coloured in this pic-

all the red is gone now, and the pale portions of the body are very dark-
now they are jarred and coloured up- but at this hour they are sleeping, so ill try to get a good pic in the morning fer you-
best i can do for pic of the father is

he is in spawn tub with daughter from spawn with the hm female- she is on the right, you can see her irridesence on caudal fin.
hopefully this father/daughter spawn will get me some nice plakats-
you can see the plastic pop bottle- when first time breeding of a girl i put that in on its side- if she hides in it the male will attack the bottle, not realising how to get in it for a while- she can rest

Pretty cool! Do you have a picture of one of the male flaring with all finnage in view? I'd love to see what they look like. And how old are they? I'm really excited to breed this girl. Normally, she's very pale and carries stress bars all the time in the community tank. But now, I have her in the spawn tank with her spawn brother also a SB PK. They've been in there for technically a bit over a day. I love how's she's all barred up like a zebra. :)

They are such a cute couple! Before all he would do is chase her around and not work on the bubblenest. SO, she goes off to the bubblenest and pecks at it while he's on the other side of the tank. I believe she's trying to tell him to get to work or else she wouldn't embrace with him. Now he's busy working on the nest, and she's tired of waiting. SO, she goes under the nest and starts shaking her booty at him trying to tell him it's time. BUT, he doesn't get it and keeps working on the nest. LOL LOL LOL Now she's mad and attacks him for being such an idiot. I actually have a video of her going to him, but not the attacking part.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6Us9RVuDZcWOO... Yeevia, you're babies are gonna make some babies soon. :lolo:

sorry aiwen- those males are all asleep lol- tomorrow when i change theyre water ill get some pics for yu- f1 will surely look odd when you do this, but its the after breeding that counts- the pk x hm spawn yeilded about 30 nice fish- they were hatched at the end of april- so about 3 months old- so far only 2 good males- about 1 inch long- at least 10 females for sure- and a bunch of undecideds. but i only needed to start jarring them this week- so less dominant males will now pop up.
the biggest of the girls is in the tub with her dad- been in there 6 hours now, fully barred. he is working on his nest.
good luck!

hi-
here are a couple males- sorry about the crappy photos- had no square jars left lol
and the flash seems to make the fish appear lighter in colour- aw well-

WoW! Do keep up dating the black pair! Don't worried if the male not making bubbles. When he breed, he sure will make bubbles. I had few pairs like that and the male will make bubbles when they spawing. Using a fake foam floater will do the trick (posted in breeding tips). ;)

eggs already laid yeevs- did it at first light this morning.
this male always has a bubblenest- builds one wherever he goes, and is real gentle with the ladies
right now he is letting her help him tend the eggs- was the same when he spawned with her mom.
will do a sibling mating as well in a week or so and see what that produces lol.
AiWen - July 23, 2006 10:27 PM (GMT)
Wow! They have really interesting tails. I'm definately gonna try at the SD x PK thing myself. Could we see some pictures of the females? I love little girls!
Day 3 - 7/23/06
I woke up this morning at 9:45AM to see they have started trying to embrace. Failed a couple of thousands of times, but finally got one right with 3 eggs coming out. I left them alone to continue and went back to check on them at 1:30PM. WOOT! More eggs! Around 20 or so, but no problem, they're still young and able.
I just checked again like 10 minutes ago. The female is swimming around now, not with the male anymore. I'll let her stay in there for a little while more, just in case they want to embrace again. Since in my previous spawn, the female left the nest and stayed on the other side of the tank for like an hour then went back to the male to continue embracing afterwards.

look at this pic- when i was putting the girl in her safety jar i noticed a little guy in the tub- can yu see him?

looks to be about 2 weeks old- and dad doesnt bother it- so i leave it in there
this brings me to another thing you may be interested in- he is the result of a spawn attempt a few weeks ago- i tried to mate the super black pk to another female- this one-

but thought her infertile because the eggs never seemed to hatch- apparently some did lol-
anyway, she was the result of a spawn i did between this halfmoon pk

and this vt female- crappy pic

this produced males like this

and females like this

the males have terrible vt finnage- but the daughters look good- they will produce good pk when backcrossed
that halfmoon pk was a nasty fella- wanted only to kill all the copper hm females i gave him- full of hatred he was lol- only had a small number of hm females at that time as well- so didnt want to risk them. he does love that vt female tho- i got her from a pet store lol. i now have a few hundred nice females here- hm and half plakat- so ill get a spawn from him sooner or later that produces nice fish- in the meantime i have his daughters to work with- but because mom was vt they likely only good for trad pk breedings- also i got about 25 percent dt in this spawn- no even lobes- but nice enough dorsals on some. ive left most in the growout tank for now- may be useful some day
btw- if anyone wants any fry from these spawns, and can pick them up in or near hamilton, canada- you can have as many as you like for free
AiWen - July 24, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
Whoah they're really nice! Well, my Super Black spawn failed. The male ate all the eggs and the bubblenest has dissapeared. I think I'm gonna spawn my Cambodian HMx next. Gonna grab the masked girl out of the 37g and start conditioning.
I wish I lived in Canada so I can get bettas from you and Chris, but I'm in the US.

hi aiwen- you are lucky to be in the u.s- you can get some of yeevias fish!
i have to do all these funny matings because i couldnt get the females i needed here- i would try again with that mating- sometimes the eggs not fertilized, orr some other prob when the male does that-
im on a pic taking roll here now- so just so you guys dont think im some weird cross breeding wanker- heres some 3 month old hms lol- notice yeevias nephews ials -love them

hi
to update on super black pk to daughter from hm cross, i see many fry, all swirling about and dropping from the nest- he is real busy and for the first time since i got him refusing to eat- last 2 spawns he took food all thru it, and was eating right until the eggs hatch this time- fry should free swim starting tomorrow i figure
leaving these postings here as they pertain to genetics- but will post an abbreviated version in spawning pair showcase or brood photos when father is done- will be a month or so before he is out of the tub for a good pic. i wont use him for breeding again until his daughters(or is it now grandaughters) are old enough-
that stray fry in pic above from his previous attempt is doing fine- noticably larger today- i havent fed him anything, but the tub has many planaria worms in it, and some little copepods that live on my plants- his belly is very large. will begin bbs feeding new fry in 2 days- then he will get plenty
AiWen - July 26, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
Cool. I love it when they become free-swimmers. It's like little fishies doing the matrix.

Keep the updates comin'! :D
fraser - August 9, 2006 02:02 AM (GMT)
hi- been busy so havent done any pics or anything- oldest fry from cross with blue female is around 5 weeks old- is about half his dads size, and feeds alongside dad on bloodworms and flakes and things- there was the one spawn i did with his daughter- only 2 fry emerged after 4 days, then they spawned again- again only 2 fry, so i put her in her pop bottle and left her in the tub, i think because she so young she is producing weak fry- dad eats them in first 2 days i think- the 4 that came from these spawns are under 3 weeks old but already taking bloodworms and following dad and older half brother around - will see fast growth with these 5 babies- in a couple weeks ill let the female out for another spawn-
will take pics on the weekend, as i need to do them in the daylight or they will not look good lol-
btw- the father is looking incredible, and although he was never a very friendly fish and ignored me for the last 6 months, he now is very inquisitive, rubbing against my hand when im poking around there, begging for food etc- with the small ones beside him lol-
guess hes happy to live in his little paradise with a woman and children-
going to set up another for a giant plakat i have here and use one of my other half plakat females to do same- just have nowhere for another tub here lol
AiWen - August 9, 2006 02:12 AM (GMT)
LOL! That must be a great feeling! You got a Pimp. :lolo: Hope it all goes well.
Akamaru-Enko - August 11, 2006 12:34 AM (GMT)
:welcome
OMG
cool pair lol
LaBella - August 11, 2006 10:05 AM (GMT)
Well there is a correlation between dam size and egg size.
The smaller the female, the smaller the eggs, the smaller the fry when they hatch.
I am actually trying to boost the size on some of my females for this reason.
I put the smallest of my girls in an outside tub with a ton of goodies in it, copepods, and moina, and I am going to leave her there for a week.
If after that time, she is as big, or bigger than her spawn sister, I am putting a few more girls outside in their own bins for a couple weeks, just to get that needed size boost on them.
bettaqueen - November 28, 2006 06:13 PM (GMT)
See Amukaru there is the answer about breeding you one large female with the bigger male. See the bigger female is desired.
Akamaru-Enko - January 12, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Well the female is bigger in my case.
