Title: The Worms Crawl In The Worms Crawl Out

LaBella - January 4, 2009 12:55 PM (GMT)
Oh my house is crawling with worms.. and it's a good thing.
First, the black worms. I have found a source close to home for black worms.. And I picked up a pound of them, so YAY! It was 20 dollars for the pound, and they are a little skinnier than the ones I have been buying in the little cups at That Fish Place and Captain Nemo's.. There is a story behind that name, but I'll save it for another time.
Skinny or not, I am not complaining, because I have been needing a source of black worms in bulk that I could afford, and now I have it.
The other worms are the super worms I bought for my turtle Fred (he of the Rock Hard Abs).
I hate buying super worms at Petsmart.. They just aren't cost effective IMO. And going to That Fish Place to get them requires a half hour drive both ways.. I have to be heading that way, or buying a bunch of stuff I can only get there.
BUT I was in the neighborhood.. since the guy I got the blackworms from lives about 5 minutes from the store, and I snagged some super worms.
But a few days ago, I was on the net looking up how to cultivate them, and I saw something that popped out in my mind.. It said to put an apple or potato slice in with them for moisture because the worms will eat each other for the moisture... But I know that apple and potatoes will draw fruit flies... which are good for bettas, but you can't catch the darned things, so that was out.
But then I had an epiphany... CRICKET JELLY!!
Now, I don't know what this stuff is really called, but I call it cricket jelly. This is the stuff that they give to crickets, because apparently they are so stupid they drown in the slightest amount of water. It occurred to me that this stuff would be excellent for super worms, and it IS.
Now, the last two weeks, I had been taking a small wad of toilet paper, and wetting that, but this stuff is so much more fun to watch them eat. I am supposing I'll get the one that has all the nutrients in it as well.. the super worms I get from That Fish Place has these tiny little nugget things of food in it for the super worms to eat, so I didn't get the nutrient cricket jelly.. But I'll probably get it when the nugget things have been eaten up.
Now, you all know I get some crazy ideas, but some times they work and this is one that has.. I had 4 super worms molt in less than 12 hours from the time I bought them.
I have had another crazy idea, and I am going to see if this stuff might be a viable alternative for other critter feeding... It would be awesome if I could grow micros on cricket jelly.
In the meanwhile, I am going to play with these worms, lol. I was telling my mother soon after we bought them, your grandchild, (Oni), is playing with worms.. she says to me, well, she gets it honestly, lol.
Yes, she does. :Whisssss
